Hi Arnel, I've been watching your videos for a long time, and i get so many information about grammar. furthermore, I am a student of English department therefore recently what i needed much is writing a perfect paragraph with complete meaning and clear idea. The reason behind that is that i am being asked alot to explain some actions, activities and the main idea or them. For example, ive been given a story or a poem to read and i have to explain everything, so sometimes i face some problems with long paragraph and how to give clear idea. In brief explanation i hope you make a video teaching us how to do so.

Hello Arnel. I really enjoy your videos, so I purchased 2 of the PDFs as soon as I finished this one. Thank you so much for putting so much effort into it and making it so interesting and understandable! I received 9/10 because I got the question 8 wrong. I don't know why even if "should have been here" (from Q8) and "should have been charging" (from Q10) look exactly the same form to me; they represent different meanings.
Thank you so much Shephew! I really hope my PDFs help you! First let's look at the structures: Q8: should have + past participle (should have BEEN there) Q10: should have + been + ing (should have BEEN CHARGING) If there is "ing," a sentence can be described as "ongoing." Secondly, "be" is a stative verb. It can sometimes be dynamic, but it's usually stative. This means it cannot be used in the "ing" form. We say: It's chilly. I am cold. Not: It is being chilly. I am being cold. I understand the two sentences are confusing because they are both in the past, but remember that stative verbs are not used with "ing" and do not emphasize ongoing situations. I hope this helps! :)
Hi Arnel! This is another excellent video by you. I got 10 out of 10. I have a question that is not directly related to today's topic. I noticed you wrote here at 17:15, "I heard you playing video games all night." instead of "I heard you were playing video games all night." Why is "were" missing? Hi Arnel! This is another excellent video by you. I got 10 out of 10. I have a question that is not directly related to today's topic. I noticed you wrote here at 17:15, "I heard you playing video games all night." instead of "I heard you were playing video games all night." Why is "were" missing? The context is about ongoing past action, and we use the past continuous tense for that kind of situation, right? Can you clarify this for me, please? I'm confused. I think the first one is a gerund, but I don't understand the differences between these two sentences. Do they mean the same thing? Thanks in advance!
The expression:
- "I heard you PLAYING video games all night".
# (emphasizes the action in itself).
The expression:
"I heard YOU WERE playing video games all night".
# (emphasizes the person who was doing the action).
BUT, in the long run, I think both expressions can be used interchangeably or indistinctly because they might convey the same idea.
BUT I ALSO THINK THAT;
"I heard you were playing video games all night" can also mean that;
# SOMEONE TOLD ME that you were playing video games all night,
Or.
# Someone told me "YOU PLAYED video games all night.
Besides, from my point of view, this expression is grammatically correct, at least, it's the most correct.
But I might be wrong, so let's wait for Arnel's answer.
Thanks for reading my comment. 👍.
@@fredylopez2477 Thank you, Fredy, for your attention to my comment! I really appreciate it. Your opinion makes sense, but you're right; let's wait for Arnel's answer.
Great question!
They do not mean the same thing. The nuances are slightly difference.
1) I heard you playing video games. = I heard you with my own ears.
2) I heard you were playing video games. = Someone else told me.
Sense verbs can have the structure: VERB + subject + "ing"
-I HEARD you playING video games.
-I FELT something crawlING down my back.
-We SEE seals plaYING around the harbor.
-Can you SMELL something burnING?
So, the function is the same as a continuous tense because there is an ongoing action, but we don't use "be" (were playing) when the speaker is emphasizing what they are experiencing.
I hope this helps. And great score by the way! :)
