The Long Way To a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers is excellent. Sadly, the sequels didn't hit the spot for me. The Quarter Share series by Nathan Lowell came close, but with a younger protagonist. And in fantasy, Drew Hayes' work (the Fred series, Forging Hephaestus, and Super Powereds) also has a similar found family kind of vibe. And reading more is also the only real way to read faster. None of the skimming or speed reading type of tactics work. But especially for people who haven't read a lot, reading consistently can speed comprehension noticeably.
