    Discovered Willie this year after his star Spangler Banner at football game got press. I think he’s a musical genius. A real treasure. Hope he gets good medical care for cancer and he plays for years to come. I want to go to Maui to catch a performance. A new Fan.

      Tom, I hope you made it to hear Uncle Willie. He passed away two nights ago at home surrounded by family. I'm grieving heavily over here on Kauai, feeling blessed to have attended his live shows 4 times. The world has lost a great heart and incredible talent.

      David Gardener Unfortunately I wasn’t able to catch a show. Very very sad when I heard Willie K died. I knew with his diagnosis it wasn’t going to be good. I don’t fully understand why he didn’t attain the success that would have increased his profile and popularity. Incredible talent. Very sad time.

    hold yer fire, Perez..this is a fantastic TRIO..they power each other..Jerry Byers is the horse, arppeggiating, strong strides through water, huge rock rhythm from that man... giving Kris and Willie a ride to fight with..it's a big, rare, beautiful brawl, buddy..dig it!

    Hi Dave thanks for your comment. I couldn't disagree with you more. I have seen Willie along with Jerry on bass and Kris Thomas on drums on 5 separate occasions over the past three years. They are as tight together as you would want any trio to be. Willie is in charge of the sound coming off of the stage, I can assure you of that. If there is any fault with this video chalk it up to the microphone on my camera which may be a bit too sensitive for Kris's percussion.

      @Markwitz, I kind-of agree with @Dave Perez: Kris Thomas' terrific drumming is way too high in the mix, but that is probably the Kuumbwa house engineer's fault. I imagine the mix is good in the monitors, but for the mix coming off the stage Thomas should be playing like 1/10th the number of strokes so as not to be crowding out the others. What really sticks for me, tho, is at about 5:30 when the texture opens out and Uncle Willie starts his guitar solo, and Thomas starts whacking off-beats on a tuned e-drum that's totally out of tune, ie the song is on E-Major and the e-drum is tuned to a c-natural: it's a teeth-gritting discord in a wonderfully clear recording of a crappy mix of a near-sublime tour-de-force performance, which I thank you for posting :-D Between his fingers and his voice-box, Uncle Willie is one of the most astounding musical instruments ever to walk the earth.

      First time listener, but I jammed with Kris many years ago, and even then he was hyper-attentive to occupying his own space and not stepping on others'. This is the first time I've heard Willie K, and I'm blown away. I also think the overall mix levels are damn good for a live TH-cam video.

      @@silkroadcaravan add to that, uncle willie looks 'tired'...as in big party the night before in santa cruz...it looks like he just got out of bed for the performance, but by minute 5, he's the musician in spite of the 'hangover'!
      hahahaha...i first saw him perform his now famous version of 'over the rainbow' LIVE AT HAPAS in 1993, while they were recording for that cd...which i still own.
      he's one of the greatest musicians i have ever seen...he makes the average 'rock star' look like an apprentice!
      he's worth watching in almost any state of mind...although i have seen him way to drunk at hapa's once or twice...but he was a young rock star back then, and already untouchable with his music.

      Having seen Willie K many times over 20 years I can share, he always told a funny story about when he wrote this song stoned. Also, if you read the lyrics you keep pushing from Hendrix, they do not match LOL. Nice try, but wrong title, wrong lyrics, wrong song. Love Hendrix, Love Willie. But not the same song brutha.

    • @markwitz
      @markwitz  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ThomasJNelsonRealtor I'll be honest with you. Until this time I have never listened to the Hendrix song all the way through. You are definitely right that the lyrics to the two songs are completely different, but you have to admit that Willie sure did use a large part of the Hendrix melody. I wonder how a copyright court would rule on this. I have also seen Wille many times in the last 20 years, I think 8 times total. I filmed 7 of those concerts. With his permission. What an enormous talent we have lost. I will defer to you my friend and edit the title. Might as well give Willie all the credit he deserves. Even though i still feel Jimmie should get his props for the melody, as well. How do you think I should honor both of them?

    • @ThomasJNelsonRealtor
      @ThomasJNelsonRealtor 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@markwitz You can give Willie his props as you said, but certainly mention how influenced he must have been by Jimi Hendrix's May This Be Love. I certainly hear where you drew your comparison, they do share melodies in spots for sure. But, I just happened to know it was an original lyrically and musically it does depart from Hendrix in places. My wife and I knew Willie casually from hanging out with him at Hapa's in Kehei and seeing him on the road many times since 20000. He's told the story of how he wrote Waterfall while stoned and talking to cows...it's actually really funny, but only the way Willie could tell it. Peace brutha, Aloha. Maui Tribe 4Ever.

    Somehow this performance did not sound the way it should. Acoustically it lacks dimension and the drum seems to overpower Willie K.

  • @daveperez3321
    @daveperez3321 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Get rid of the busy drummer and this is a great version of this song. Some drummers want to fill all of the empty spaces. This drummer plays on top of Willie and destroys the whole performance.
