It works, I do this. I make mine with Dr Bronners Castile Soap and non-gmo oil. My lemon tree was inundated with leaf miner attacking every single new leaf trying to grow. For three weeks, one time a week (I chose Wednesdays) I sprayed my lemon tree thoroughly top and undersides, then after two days I rinsed off the soap/oil spray with clear water from my hose. I repeated this process every week for three weeks and now today the new leaves popping out are not being attacked but growing nicely. In the process of this I saw many clear, round tiny eggs on the leaves and would squish those with my fingers. The process needs to be repeated so as the eggs hatch those babies are also smothered with the oil/soap spray.

I used this solution on our tomatoes, oregano, basil, papaya, peas, green beans, I sprayed every plant in the garden just before sundown. We got home from work and half of our plants were stressed, looking as if they had chemical burns. We live in central Florida and the sun took a toll on our plants. We are hoping they will recover after giving all plants a good clean water wash.
We have been fighting our leaf miner infestation for 1-2 months (using Neem Oil).
My wife almost kill me because I kill the garden. Thank God she she has His values and she still loves me.
I'll use this solution to kill the weeds in the yard from now on.

  • @MaddyBombay

Great information on oil soap mix. The great thing about the spray or ( neem oil spray which is easy and natural) is that by spraying the plants it disrupts their life cycle during the larva stage. Basically the larva already in the plant will not be disturbed but when they drop into the soil and finish their cycle to adulthood the eggs they lay in the future will hatch an eat the leaf with the oil on it and die then. Also leaf miners very rarely kill plants especially if you feed and water your plants regularly. The best defense against these pests is a healthy plant.

These little buggers I just noticed today on my just getting started tomato plants. Went on line and found out what it was and also that it could effect my Marigolds. Sure enuf they were getting attacked too. A little more digging and up came Project Diaries! Since it was easier to just take off the effected leaves, that's what I did. But also sprayed the Tom's and put them back out side! Thanks again for the help!

I'd just like to ask, since leaf miners attacked my seedlings which only have 2 leaves on them, would I still need to pull these leaves or cut them out? I need these for my grade in class so I'm quite concerned. THank you very much!

Be careful with using any oils though where you have super hot sunny conditions. Cooking oil, mineral oil and Neem oil all have been known to cause sunburn (just like they would if applied to your skin before you went out in the sun) so try to time your spraying on an evening before an upcoming overcast day. I just saw a video where Neem Oil spray caused a lot of sunburned leaves.

Leaf miners ate the leaves of my melon that caused it to die.
I'm planting melons again with this method. I'm hoping my melons are gonna be free from pests.

I find that using any oil mixture on my plants create severe sunburn, and there's no way to wash it off once it's on you have to let it take its course and with these delicate leaves even the humidity alone in Ontario burns after I tried oil. I guess it just depends on where you live?
