  • If you've been following along on my social pages (@thercgeek), then you've been seeing the assembly of my 110" wingspan VQWarbirds B-24 Liberator over the last couple months. The model is being featured in a Model Airplane News review article in the November issue, but I wanted to give you guys a sneak peak flight. This is such an amazing model that is built well and flies beautifully. It looks much like its full scale counterpart having great presence in the air. For paint scheme, I opted for "Scorpio" from the 834th Bombardment "Zodiacs" Squadron which I love on the airplane. I will be doing additional videos on the model once the review hits stands which includes a full assembly review, flight review as well as discussions on adding functional bomb bay doors and turrets. I'm thinking some weathering may be in order too! Here are some of the specs on the model:

      My Dad also B-24's out of California to patrol the coast during WWII. I followed his lead and also an Army aviator but flew rotary wings in Vietnam. Years after that I did a lot of reading about Vietnam before I returned for a visit. Did you know B-24's bombed Saigon? Japanese invaded and French did nothing to help Vietnamese. During that time, the US OSS was funding, training and arming Ho Chi Minh. They were smart and recognized he was a nationalist above all else.

    Gorgeous! Can't help but think, 'Yup, that's how they look when they roll out of the factory.'
    Is that nose sitting a little low.
    A local buddy did FL B24 with all moving turrets and a weathering and paint scheme to match the picture his father took in front of a B24.
    I had to see it in person. I'm sure your bird looks even better in person as well. Pictures and video look nice but can hardly do justice. Believe it or not, even my 12 year old daughter enjoyed seeing my B17 fly in person. Crazy cool scale birds and you're efforts are great with the turrets. I didn't even mount the guns yet. Ha ha. Got to go fly it now!

    • @JoshWeaverRC
      @JoshWeaverRC 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      With seeing the Mephis Belle in person I was trying to get video to eventually do scale on my B17. One thing that amazed me was not only how much oil was on a wing behind an engine, but also that one engine was so much more. The oil shows up so much more against the OD. If it were a model someone would criticize saying it looks like they just flung oil and dirt way too much and it blotched in chunks. Ha ha. Your B24 looks like a highly cared for and detailed Corvette. It looks solid and well built. My FW B17 was glued to one piece and is solid. I need to fling some oil though.

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, it’s too clean right now. Once I get the bomb bay doors and bomb drop sorted, I’ll dirty it up some. It is actually sitting a little too nose low. Good eye! I’ll address that at some point too.

  • @scottyd035ntknow

    One thing I'm curious about is how is the low speed handling of this plane? The full scale was reported to be a low speed nightmare for pilots. Obviously it won't be the same 1/12 scale but it's still a Davis wing...

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Slow speed characteristics are quite good. When it stalls, it may drop a wing in the worst case, but nothing violent and we're talking a pretty low airspeed also. Way slower than you'd want to be flying.

      @@Thercgeek I'm going to try to do as close to a copy of your bird including the turret boards whenever they become available. What would you recommend as an optimum motor with the same 3 blade props? Wife green-lighted me getting one of these since she is getting that $1000+ whatever 3 camera iphone for xmas lol. When do you expect those turret boards to be available?

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice! For the same 3blade props, I'd say that these motors are pretty darn good. I'm very happy with the performance of the airplane as it has power when it needs it, but cruises very efficiently at partial throttle. You could look at e-flite 25s also as they have a 1000 kv and I think an 825 kv. The 825 might be good for some larger props. I actually have the boards now, but am finalizing one feature of the software and then will get them on my website and do an announcement here.

    • @scottyd035ntknow
      @scottyd035ntknow 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Thercgeek Awesome! Can't wait! Don't want larger props, want props that look scale. 1000kv it is lol. Also see roaring top 4300s 4S in there. I already have 4 of those but 5000mah units. Assuming that won't add too much weight to do anything seeing as you needed to add lead to the nose. Only thing I might do different from what you did was get the silver B24. Will be keeping an eye out for those boards, that is so cool how the turrets move around.

    • @Thercgeek

    Watched this video a few times. Can't wait for the review to go live in a month or so so we can see all the extra stuff. I'm for sure going to get this model, I just can't decide if I want to go electric or stick with methanol 4 strokes for that sound/authenticity. Problem is they will poke out of the cowls a LOT... I think I asked on here or one of the forums when you first got this done but if you are allowed to tell us what sort of flight times are you getting again? I can get 20+ minutes out of a .52 methanol 4 stroke and a 10oz tank with CDI ignition...

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm getting 7+ minutes on the airplane easily with the 4300s. I hear you on the four strokes, would sound awesome! Problem is it requires hacking up the cowls. That is my primary motivation for electric on a lot of my warbird projects. I'm still working on the additional videos at the moment. The magazine should be out soon I think. I did do a build thread on this also: www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?3298831-VQ-Warbirds-B-24-Liberator-Assembly-Thread

I bet you could go up to 5000 or even 6000s though if you were adding a lb of weight in the nose... I know the moment arm with the weight in the nose is different but still...

    It was very impressive up until the take off. Why can't we fly scale planes in a scale manner? Watch some films on the plane you are modeling and replicate those flight characteristics. Not a criticism, just a suggestion to achieve max effect.

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Keep in mind this was only the fourth flight on the airplane and I’m still feeling out the flight characteristics of it. The takeoff in the vid was my first attempt at a more scale takeoff as I didn’t take it to full power on the roll, but obviously I have more work to do to make it look right. Once I’m much more familiar with the airplane and its characteristics, I should be able to simulate that more effectively.

    • @JoshWeaverRC
      @JoshWeaverRC 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rrudy DeDogg We got to keep them airborne. A lot of the time we fly we are nervous enough to not stall.
      I fly a model C130 and a B17. I've jumped from C130s at their stall speed and seen them land on runways I've built in the US and overseas. Even when they take off hot, flying the models like that would be agonizingly slow stick maneuvers and chew up a scale runway and fly area quick. Recently I watched Memphis Belle take off on grass at a show. As she pulls up, I'm counting. 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 and thinking my model would have already lifted off, flown way out there, turned, and be over my head at this point.
      I got lucky enough to have a C130 in my fly area as I'm flying my C130 so I try to fly in formation, of course, and my fly buddy was like wow you're out there. I line up in formation again and again and they are just lumbering.
      If we were to FPV these, which eventually I will, and have a huge flying area, we would be able to slowly pull up. The slower we fly the more we risk a stall with a nice plane we are not yet comfortable with. The bigger the plane the slower they look in flight. Just like seeing a C17 or C5 lumbering around and thinking it looks like it is just floating in the air. So even the best attempt at actual scale would make us nervous we are pushing the stall. Even my slowest flight and maneuvers in the B17 I'm critical and wishing I could make it slower. The model flying happens fast and makes your heart beat fast and that's why we love it. Hope this helps.

    • @alanyendle7010
      @alanyendle7010 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree, a wonderful model but like so many model warbird flights I see, hardly anyone flies at a speed that replicates the original. While the fast low-level pass is always fun, doing it at a slower speed presents it a lot better and gives more time to see if flying. I think that part of the problem is that, to the best of my knowledge, none of the competitions award any points for prototypical flight presentations.

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually, that is what scale competition is all about. Flying and presenting the airplane in a scale and prototypical manner. The pilot is required to fly 9 physical maneuvers with the airplane which are added to an overall flight realism score. It's fun and it's challenging.
      The one thing to remember here is that the relative speed varies based on the size of a model and also, on video, the zoom and angle of the camera can change that significantly as well. In some cases, it's just physically impossible to fly a model slow enough to have it perceived flying at the scale speed. I actually find this discussion on scale speed kind of funny vs the fact that I rolled the airplane, haha!
