For the streamer and podcaster settings: 5:20
    - Leave the windscreen on
    - Get close to the mic when speaking, about an inch (2.5 cm) away
    - Bass roll off set flat
    - Midrange enhance switch - In the flat position it will make your voice sound smoother. In the enhanced position it will help your voice cut through a little bit more.
Note: You need an inline preamp with this microphone. Recommend inline preamps:
    - Cloudlifter CL-1 Mic Activator
    - sE Electronics DM1 Dynamite 1-Channel Active Inline Preamp
    - Royer Labs dBooster In-Line Signal Booster
    - Soyuz The Launcher Inline Active Preamp
    - Radial McBoost

Because of the pandemic, I have been working from home. The healthcare services that I provide actually do not require my physical presence ( I just have to be able to observe and communicate), so I am on zoom all day. I have my sm7b set up just outside of the view of my webcam. And I am running that into my apollo interface and through a Manley VOXBOX channel strip. Having this level of control is really getting out of hand though. I think I have become MORE self conscious about my voice. I have a bunch of presets ready to go. That's right- my voice is EQed differently depending on who I talk to. Completely ridiculous... but everyone says my voice sounds immaculate.

The SM7B is an excellent dynamic mic for recording in environments that haven’t been acoustically treated, as well as in studio. This is why you see a lot of podcasters and streamers use this mic: you sound great while the mic rejects a lot of the room noise.
If you’re thinking of using this mic for professional Voice Over, I would caution against over-relying on the proximity effect to make yourself sound more resonant. Producers and engineers know it when they hear it. But if you’re banging out a quick audition in your bedroom or on-the-go, it’s a great microphone to have in your arsenal.

@@IceManGav1 Depends on budget. I currently use an Audio Technical AT2020 as my condenser mic (which is a fairly decent budget option, in my opinion). My back panel was upside down if mounted on a normal mic stand, it was setup for hanging from the top. Getting all those washers centered on the shaft so the knobs would fit back on. Use something to protect your hand those knobs will rough up your skin. You can also flip it the other way so the XLR is on the back of the mount.

I have a Scarlett Solo + SM7B and my gain is at about 4 o'clock right before the light goes yellow, no noise and it sounds great, but it's not loud enough, so I increased some gain digitally on my PC, and it sounds great. When I tried adding a cloudlifter, I could no longer crank my gain on my interface to 4 o'clock. I had to scale it back to about 1 o'clock before it goes yellow. Is that normal? I'm looking to make my mic a bit louder, but I still have my dB in my software to nearly 25 dB, plus a cloudlifter. Maybe I'm not understanding what the cloudlifter does, and perhaps I need a higher end audio interface?

    • @nick83695
      @nick83695 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

The Cloudlifter is sending a 'hotter' boosted signal from your mic to your audio interface. The idea is that this extra 25 dB of gain on the way in allows you to not have to turn up your pre-amp quite as high as this can introduce noise in the signal by the time you're getting an appropriate usable level from the mic.

This started as a reply to another comment, but I thought others might find it helpful.
The bass rolloff is great for taming boom and the proximity effect, and I use it when recording almost any male singing or speech. It does wonders for my own voice. The default extended low-end response is fantastic for recording instruments though. I love how the flat setting sounds on electric guitar, even if I often end up lopping off that low-end in the mix anyway 😋
The presence "boost" (the mic is passive, so using it technically removes a presence cut that's on by default) sounds unnatural for most voices but is worth experimenting with. I use it very infrequently and pretty much just as an alternative tone for recording electric guitars, but I'm usually just not a huge fan of the sounds it produces regardless of the application.
Activating both switches produces what I would describe as a worse, less-natural version of the SM57's tone, so I encourage any fans of the SM7b sound to also keep an SM57 + A2WS windscreen on hand for these applications. I wish there were a mic with the SM57's tight-but-full low end and the SM7b's warm-but-clear high end-that would be an endgame mic for sure.
Also, others are right in saying not every preamp is so weak that you'll need an inline preamp, so don't buy one unless you know you need it.

If I'm doing male voice podcast narration type recording and using the bass cut setting, should I use the windscreen? Is being within 4 inches of the mic good? Been experimenting but would be interested to know your take

So, did you record this video with the Shure SM7B. If so, were the switches set to flat?

Did you guys use a de-esser on those tests? With the same settings I'm getting more pops and harsh s - sounds even with a pop filter in front!

Don’t forget about John Paul White as he uses the SM7B often on his albums.
Even back in his The Civil Wars days...

Great breakdown. I utilize the Sm7b through a cloud lifter into my dbx 286s into my focusrite scarlett 18i8 and wondered if fiddling with the roll off and presence boost could help with the clarity prior to equalizing.

Very nice. I ned a mic for flute , hamonica and singing. NOTHING fancy . I'm in between Shure beta a 58 and Sennheiser e945. Had a Shure sm 58 before ( got stolen) , it worked fine but would like to try something a little better .Thanks in advance for any answer.

Hey Mitch, what do you think about using the Shure SM7B without the factory pop filter, and with a Kaotica Eyeball? May you do a review/video for it?

Very informative and useful video! The cloudlifter is a no brainer when you have this mike. It’s really powerless without some extra db. 😁👍🎧🎶

I ordered the SM7B. I will use it for live broadcasts. I'm using SSL 2+, do you think I should buy Cloudlifter?
