For 50 years, the music of the Moody Blues has been a special part of my personal history. It started in 1971-72 when I was a very young soldier returning home from a combat tour of duty in Vietnam. The music effectively worked as therapy and truly helped to keep my sanity while suffering from what we now know as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). In 1972 I attended a Moody Blues concert in Baltimore, it was bliss. I remained in the US Army for 24 years keeping my collection of Moody Blues music with me. In 2013 I had the fortune to attend another Moody Blues concert in Seattle. Through half of the concert I wept like a baby as the thoughts, feelings, and memories overwhelmed me. Rest In Peace Ray Thomas and Graeme Edge.
My brother was going to leave to get trained for Viet Nam. We were listening to the Moody Blues and I fell in love with their music. I think he came back pretty messed up too. Thank you for your service. We had amazing music back then.
Sorry to hear about Mike's passing. A founding member of The Moody Blues 🔵. He was a very talented musician. I saw him and the others at the Coliseum in New Haven
I'm 66 and just found this wonderful wisdom, I was not ready for this knowledge then but I am now I thank the universe for opening my eyes and ears! Judy Sherry
....."life is our Savior, Savior, Savior, save your Soul" Judy 66 here also, I knew even then, someone was saying more than I knew at that time, I listened to this song 100's of times, and that was my beginning ......."we just have to choose"
ah this song saves again and again --- pure light -- pure love -- Michael needed to go no further -- he reached the ultimate in this song == thank you brother
I believe Mike Pinder is the very soul of the Moody Blues...His thought provoking concepts of GOD AND THE UNIVERSE mesmerized me...He brought out the BEST in Justin Hayward.Too be sure..After his departure,,,the Moodys became too commercial..lots of really cool love songs but hardly anymore message music about our precious LORD,,,JESUS CHRIST.. Just saying...
Thomas - I agree with you. The MB's were, are, and always will be my favorite - and although I think Justin Hayward is the best singer I have ever heard, Mike Pinder is up there with him! You are right - the music he composed and sang drove deep into the soul. "Lost in a Lost world"....."melancholy man".....no superficiality here...
Agree this is the last song contributed by Mike, the true soul of the Moody Blues. They were still great but afterwards but missing that something only Mike could provided.
I didn't appreciate this group when I was young and they were first on the air. But now...they are just what I need. Such incredible talent in this group, and such great people to boot, from what I have read.
THERE WAS A MIKE -SHAPED, HOLE IN THE MOODIES MUSIC AFTER HE LEFT, AND IT WAS MORE THAN NOTICEABLE! HIS CONTRIBUTION TO THE MOODY BLUES MUSIC WAS, AND, STILL IS ASTOUNDING, THANKS MR PINDER!
"One Step Into The Light, One Step Away From Night" extremely poignant lyrics, even now 2021, Thank-You Mike where ever your journey has taken you. We, still here, Thank-You and bless you with Love & Light, and will always be grateful for the words put to paper. Thanks Michael !! forever !!! ❣❣❣
What a great voice Pinder has. The essential voice of the Moodies. Incidentally he was the only Blue who could simply walk into a Beatle or Abbey road studio session without any questions asked. Miss you Mike.
Mike Pinder's true talent and contribution to the Moody Blues were his always-pensive compositions. Always thinking beyond the confines of temporal reality and toward the metaphysical and the spiritual. The songs themselves were sophisticated tunes and always written around his philosophical and contemplative lyrics. Of all the band members he was by far the best lyricist; and his music appealed to a more mature and thoughtful ear. Pinder is an old soul; it is obvious through his compositions.
I came back from 5-yrs at "Bible college" a mess... ...however I've been enabled to love this life I'm sooo eternally grateful for since. Tks to Moody Blues cosmic-emo comprehensions, & with lil' bit of help from their spiritual symbiotes David & Janice Weale in PEi, Cda, Suzanne Vega, André Crouch, Dr Frank R Wallace of Nevada, Cat Stevens "How Can I Tell You" & my 3 most-Cosmic Gorgeous kids who kept me on the righteous track, I am here to tell you... ...repeat, repeat, & repeat some more, as long as you'll need to repeat, until you "find the purpose of your life & start to be."
amazing Mike Pinder...wonderful artist and human being. it was a a pleasure to live on this planet knowing you were there somewhere. happy 71st birthday Mike....GodBless.
I've always loved The Moody Blues - this song is absolutely beautiful. Hopefully more young people will think & create like this. Thank you for the post.....
Look at it as one line: "One step into the light, one step away from night, it's the hardest step you're gonna take. The ship to take you there is waiting at the head of the stairs that lead up through your opening mind."
Thanksgiving Day, 1978. I was there, too. My older sister and I sped out to the Civic Center right after turkey dinner. I was 15. Great show but Graeme had them flying through the songs at warp speed!
@@peterl3282 I literally got chills when I read your post along with Harris Foster's above yours. I was at that show - my first ever Moody Blues show. It was also the first time I ever heard "Forever Autumn". It was played over the PA system before the show started. I didn't know the story behind the song and hearing it kicked off my search to find a recording, not aware it was not part of any album. I saw the band live some twenty five times after that including their their final public gig in Las Vegas in 2018. Traveled from Connecticut to Las Vegas just for that show.

His only songwriting credit on the album, but his voice and/or keyboards are in evidence on all tracks. My favorite song on "Octave" is actually "Driftwood", but this one may well be second.
A minute into this song a super bright streak of light came into my room directly to my android that I was watching. Has anyone else had this happen? That was a supernatural spiritual experience ✨️.

They certainly left a mark on millions of souls - that is something few achieve. Thanks for posting this, a top ten Moodies song.
I've been listening to The Moody Blues for 30 years, I waited on Seventh Sojourn and Octave until the last few years ( there was a couple of songs I could get into), but I knew then that I would better understand these two albums later on in life, experience comes to mind. And this is the Moody Blues I can relate to now. Love these guys, been listening since The Other Side of Life.
My first concert was Shawn Phillips and the Moody Blues, at the LA Forum in 1974. The last tour Mike did with them. Without Mike and Ray in the band, the harmony vocals just aren't the same.
+james edwards - Damn... my first concert was The Moody Blues with the opener being Norman Greenbaum. Would have much rather seen Shawn Phillips. Love his Second Contribution album.
thanks for the post. Great visuals to the last Michael Pinder song with the Moodies. "Try to blow away your city blues." Inspiration to the youth that was leaving him as he went on to have a quieter life. God bless ya Mike.
Thanks for the art added. Kind of reminds me of what was in independent stores around town. Not new-age more like sweet fairy-land. Childhood young adult dreams.
43 years this has been my mantra. Now as I turn 60 and sadly, we lose the Moodies one by one, I can only pray that this remains the mantra for the next 20 or 30 years of my life. May you step into the light.
Beautiful. The most under-rated Moodies track ever (well, until YT came along). In my top ten all-time tracks, maybe somewhere in my top one. And a fitting video for Mike's most excellent Moody swansong. This will be played in 500 years time.
RIP Mike Pinder. Your music and your light lives on. Thank you

Haven't heard this one for a long time. I've said it before; Justin Hayward and John Lodge are the heart of The Moody Blues. Mike Pindar was the soul
I like that description!! It shows how important each was to the entirety of the group.

The Moody Blues were never the same when Mike Pinder left the group. He added a sense of depth to the music which made them great!
Right on irishpogi
They took their gift in a different direction. I think both directions are great .
TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU MY DARLING

While I loved Mike Pinder's influence and mellotron contributions, they were all exceptional and spiritual musicians.
What an awesome 'full' sound there with the mighty Meletron, for years I thought it was an orchestra.

One step into the light
One step away from night
It's the hardest step you're gonna take
The ship to take you there is waitin' at the head
Of the stairs that lead up through your opened mind
Above the dark despair
Shines a light that we can share
Close your eyes and look up in between your brows
Then slowly breathing in
Feel the life force streaming in
Hold it there, then send it back to him
All the old things are returning
Cosmic circles ever turning
All the truth we've been yearning for
Life is our savior, savior, savior
Save your soul
The river of living breath
Is flowing through the sun
He was there before the Earth began
The world will drag on you
Use his love to pull you through
Find the mission of your life and start to be
All the old things are returning
Cosmic circles ever turning
All the truth we've been yearning for
Life is our savior, savior, savior
Save your soul
There's one thing I can do
Play my Mellotron for you
Try to blow away your city blues
Your dreams are not unfound
Get your feet back on the ground
The truth will set us free, we cannot lose
We cannot lose
We just have to choose
All the Moodies were talented but I felt that Mike Pinder was always the glue that held it together.
That was true even on the old Laine Era tracks. Think of how "Go Now" would sound without Mike's piano (for a single example).
