Very nice Chief. A true "suicide shifter" will have the clutch spring-loaded like a car so if the bike starts to lean left while stopped at a stoplight & you take your foot off the clutch, you're IN the intersection!

Yes it’s true! They were originally left hand throttle because during WW1 and the Great Depression most of their business was Police, Fire Fighter and Postal Delivery government contract. It was mostly the Police contract and a good majority of the Police officers were right hand shooters. Indian “Motocycles” that is the spelling for the original trademark produced reliable quality and well engineered motorbikes. All of the bearings are standard size, and all fasteners were of fine thread in the British Imperial System. Therefore they don’t rattle loose like the Harleys. However, the were expensive for the times. Most of the 4 cylinder bikes were originally built for the Police because they were the fastest bikes of the times and a new 1942 Indian Four went for $1200 USD. No one else could afford them except the government. During the war effort from 1940-45, civilian model Chiefs with stripped down fenders were contracted to HRH King George VI- Canadian Infantry dispatch division. The serial alpha designation on the engine cases for these military machine are engraved CAV plus the numerical sequence, which stands for Canadian Army Vehicle. I have a 1947 Chief that has one of these engines as the original was baffed out years beforehand. I also have a police pursuit original speedometer with the reset button on the lower right ( because the throttle is on the left) The Coppers used to run up and alongside of a speeding car, push the button and a secondary lever would set at the rate of speed. There you have it! Physical proof that you were speeding Sir! 👮♂️😊😢❤

The NYC police dept. asked the Wigwam to swap the throttle to he left , For Their Motor Pool, so that the motor officers could " Grab Horse Rains, Direct Traffic & Unholster their gun is pursuit of a bad guy" so yes you heard right, you now know the other 2 reasons WHY
