  • Visakha Dasi presents a balanced and insightful view of the context and meaning of scriptural statements about women to encourage all ladies on the path of spiritual growth and empowerment. Visakha Dasi spent 50+ years studying Srila Prabhupada's teachings and legacy, and practicing Bhakti yoga. She and her husband, Yadubara Prabhu, traveled with Srila Prabhupada for nearly 6 years. She deeply studied the Vedic scriptures which Prabhupada translated and wrote commentaries on. She is an award winning author, photographer and the president of Bhaktivedanta Manor in the UK.

It would be dishonest to say Srila Prabhupada was on either side since he made numerous statements on different occasions in different contexts. There are numerous other statements apart from the 4 canto which can be seen as not supporting FDG very well . ESP in the context of Devahuti where he mentioned their tendencies to be attached to this world as weaknesses.
The problem with both sides is believing that Srila Prabhupada is on their side without paying to sufficient evidence on the other side.

Srimati Visakha Dasi Mata - Thank you for your clear Krishna Consciousness overview of this seemingly ponderous issue among members of our society. You backed up this discussion with "Guru, Shastra and Sadhu" citations reminding us of the subtlety of our heritage from Srila Prabhupada. It is clear that 'where there is Krishna there is victory'. Srila Prabhupada by example welcomed with open arms and heart his women disciples from the beginning and their powerful preaching, including your huge contribution. He has shown by the results to have established the spiritual context and expression of a soul's, male or female, actual identity. If some threaten schism let them go, and soon their whereabouts will become unknown or they will become rich and famous lost souls tragically losing their way home. In one sense we must remember the adage, "Everyone's first teacher is always a woman; the Mother". Again, thanks and All Glories to Srila Prabhupada and the Assembled Devotees!

Hare Krishna, yes, women can be of course more advanced then their husband or any other male person. Like the Nagapatnis and the wives of the brahmana s. What to speak of Mandodari. Can you imagine having Ravana as your husband?? However, we do not see that they left their varnashram position. All these great ladies remained in their subordinate position although spiritually more advanced. The wives of the brahmanas did not become diksa gurus. Their level of tolerance is what makes them so great. They remain chaste and in their position despite so much trouble and give good advice. Another point I would like to make is that we cannot say that ALL women who become devotees are automatically free from female frailties. Therefore we should understand that the varnashram position protects us all from our own material frailties as we are on our way to the highest realisation of pure love of Godhead and complete freedom from identification with matter. Someone who is advanced in spiritual life will automatically treat with respect all living entities and will not want to obstruct anyone. yhs Saraswati dd The Netherlands

Great lecture! Addressed and, in my mind, resolved a lot of "controversies" in our movement.
