    Re: Side panel hints-I didn’t like them at all until you explained how to make them wider. What I really like on them is that, if you “edit all” you can add descriptions to every line and clean up place names. Especially useful on census, because I track addresses. I open the actual doc in a separate window (and monitor :-) ) and I can glean lots of info without going back and forth. The downside is that relationships are not added, like from the census. My current issue is when adding new people from documents, they often come up gray. Would be nice if they could add a gender button on that page. Thanks for the improvements!! :-)

      I love the side panels, it’s nice to still be able to look at everything on the person’s profile while editing data entry and you just have to open the record image which is fine. If they could add a pop up option (if they don’t have it already) that would be awesome.

    I would love to see an update to the media in an ancestor’s profile on Ancestry. I have old videos of a few of my ancestors, that I would love to add to my tree. It would also be interesting if you could assign which person is which in each photo. Thanks for a great video!

    Another suggestion would be to somehow blur out or make slightly invisible to records you’ve already seen. I’m alway selecting censuses or marriage records I’ve seen already.
    And also a pop up feature on a search result page similar to the hint page with the sidebar that way you don’t leave the results and have to go back and reload. In the hints page, the doc pops up if you select the photo and your still on the hint page. Not sure if explaining well.

      @GenealogyTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting ideas. The side bar has had a lot of, let's say, less that happy campers using it. I'm getting use to it. I think the idea of a side bar for the hints is good. I never thought about it since I use multiple screens, but for those with one screen, I can see how that would be a huge help.

    • @Richard-zm6pt
      @Richard-zm6pt 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@GenealogyTV I should add that Find My Past has a different search method. You probably know, but when search results come up, they are in the form of a list of hyperlinks arranged from earliest to most recent (if I remember correctly). Once you've selected a hyperlink and reviewed the document and returned to the list, the hyperlink changes from blue to purple. If you leave the site and come back to the same search, the new list will still have those links you visited in purple, so you know where to resume your review of records. You can still revisit the old links as they are still listed, just marked as seen. I don't know what Ancestry's hurdles will be, but I thought Crista looked uncomfortable and a little defensive with this question. She seemed to imagine that the link to the documents might disappear and not come up for review again, but that shouldn't be the case. The documents don't go anywhere after they're seen. Sorry to be so long.

    I’d like to see more q&a videos like this. It’s nice. I have a suggestion For the photo option. Why not just add a tag feature to the photos. Simple and quick. And work on the more complex search features after.
    A question of mine I would love for her to answer would be is there going to be a toggle on off feature for hints. The leaf is enticing and it’s one reason people go astray lol. I have a load of people who are just in-laws and I have no desire to go any further into that line bc there’s no bloodline connection. It’s be nice to have a toggle switch for certain surname groups or individuals

    Not sure if it is just me, but I when I click on a tree hint I have a heck of a time getting back to my tree. I have to select a new hint, or go to my own tree from the drop down. The back button won't work. Frustrating. Am I doing something wrong?

    • @GenealogyTV
      @GenealogyTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In the upper left corner, just under the Ancestry logo, you can see a green icon that looks like a tree. Try clicking that to get back to the tree you had last selected. What I do is I keep my tree open in the left most tab. Then, when I go to click on a hint, instead of just clicking, right-click and choose "Open in a New Tab." That way your tree is always in the left most browser tab and your other stuff is in browser tabs to the right. You can open several browsers at once, then work one at at time, and when you are done, just close that tab (preserving the tree on the left tab). You may need to refresh your tree (left most tab) once in a while if you add people to your tree, so you see the updates. I hope that makes sense? In short, use Right-Click and "Open in a New Tab," instead of just clicking on a hint.

      Try using Tags. I use them all the time. For example, if I am working on a particular branch and I don’t have time to add parent and/or Children, I have tags for that. For example, if I added a husband and wife, but don’t have time or the information isn’t ready available, but I know that the wife had parents and siblings, I will add a tree tag named “Add Families”. Then I can use the tree search filter function to search for those records tagged ‘Add Families’ . The search will display all records that were tagged ‘All Families.’ Tags can be found on the notes side panel.

    If there was an option to open the original record image in the side panel that would be a really helpful feature, perhaps with the same expand and contract buttons to best suit a specific record type.
    For example, you click on the thumbnail previewed in the side panel to display the record image next to it or you can have the option as well to open it in a new tab with a green on-screen “open in new tab” button or the normal functions like tap and hold, right click, etc.

    Crista...Love your shows. How do I get an incorrect entry changed on Public trees. For instance there is a mistake in your Arkansas Chaney/Shipman line with the entry of John Dennis Chaneys family. His son Francis Marion Chaney shown in the 1860 Osage, Carroll County, AR Census born in about 1846 . He is listed as being married to a Martha Ann Welch. This is incorrect. She is married to a Francis Marion Chaney (son of Richard Chaney) but he is from KY and born about 1837. The one you have listed as Martha Ann Welch husband died in 1860 i Johnson County, TX as shown in the 1860 Texas Mortality Schedule as dying from Head disorders. . The whole Chaney/Shipman family are in Johnson County, Tx in the 1870 Texas Census. Is there any way to get this simple change made in your Public Tree on Ancestry. I would really appreciate this change because I feel that some people will see your tree and think this entry is correct. Thanks.

      I have been researching my Chaney line for about 55 years and at the beginning I made this same . That was before Genealogy on TV. This does not seem like a big problem but I have taken it personal and I have been looking for people with this mistake and ask them to check it out. Most will change it after given the info but some will not and new researchers see it and copy it and it all starts again.

      @@GenealogyTV Connie Thanks. I did not mean to take up all of your time either.
      One suggestion for a show some dat. Over the last few years, I have taken DNA test with 5 different companies. (Ancestry, 23amdMe, My Heritage, Living DNA, and CRIgenetics. I was puzzled by the fact that I did not receive one match to my Chaney Surname. Then I tried Family Tree DNA test including the Big Y DNA test which passes from father to son. When the results came in, still no matches to a single Chaney. When I run a search on my matches from FTDNA, I get mainly Erwin, Irwin, Irvine, Ervine, and Irving with very very many in the 0-3 GD. I even joined the Irwin Clan Surname Project and they helped me understand what could have happened. One of my Erwin Ancestors may have been adopted or taken in by a Chaney family. All of my paper research of my “Chaney” Ancestors over the last 50+ years takes me back to 1740 in Kentucky which I feel is 100% accurate with sources for all my records. Only problem is I have Erwin DNA and Chaney Paper Research line. Thanks and keep of the good work.

    One of ancestry's rivals already flags search results as you look at them so you can see straight away in a subsequent search that you have looked at these. It wouldn't be a big deal to be able to prioritize order in any new list on that basis. I would just be happy for ancestry to stop providing results that are outside the search criteria I've set. Go to dnapainter.com/tools/sharedcmv4 to learn all the different possible relationships for any given cM range.

    I know the answer is probably no but i have to ask to make sure.. Is it possible for me to share a 8th great grandmother with someone if we only share 11 cM across 1 segments? Their tree is built out pretty good and her tree has a lot of different countries that I don't have so I already can limit a lot of lines in her tee.

      I'm no pro, but here's my understanding of the realities of relationships in the 11cM range. The amazing thing would be you share any cMs at that distance! Reality #1: it is mathematically possible to share 0cM with a 2C1R - so at that distance, 8th ggm, it's like throwing dice with 1000 sides. So - reality #2: this could (theoretically) be a 3C2R, or a "genetic throwback " to10 generations ago, & obviously anything in between.
      Have you looked at WATO - "What Are The Odds" - using DNA Painter? Sometimes I like to have it on another screen when I'm befuddled, trying to figure out what relationship I might have with a tree.
      It's very good for seeing possibility, & probability , of ranges of numbers of cM. Don't give up!
      ( I also dig a lot down in that cM range.. It can clarify things, or take you nowhere. Good luck! )

      Interesting ideas Barbara Bird raises. So my take on this is that at 11cM we're getting down to the edge of viability. Ancestry no longer provides DNA matches less than 8cM because the odds of false matches are greater. If it were me, is I'd study the shared matches you might have with that 8cM cousin to see if there are any better matches to help confirm your hypothesis. Also, upload your DNA everywhere else so you can possibly find more DNA cousins along that line. Lastly, do the traditional genealogy research to see if the 11cM match connects to you through the paper trail. That's the real key.
