  • Jolleen is a first time freshener Dexter cow. She is halter trained and mostly lead trained. In this video we use a Kow Kant Kick apparatus to keep her from kicking so we can milk her.
Jolleen is homozygous polled and carries A2/A2 milk proteins.
    Can we do it??

    About Sweet Briar Farm
We are a small farm located in Central/Northern Michigan. We farm every inch of our 6 acres. We breed Registered Dairy Goats, Dexter Cattle, and Heritage Hogs. Clean healthy food is important to us and we like to produce the majority of our food on the farm and we grow and raise enough to sell to local customers. Producing our own food also means we forage for wild edibles such as mushrooms and tap our maple trees in the spring to make maple syrup. In 2019 we added honeybees to the farm and have had as many as 30 active hives producing honey for us.
Our goats include Nubian goats, Mini Nubians, Fainting Goats, and Nigerian Dwarf goats.
Our Heritage Hogs include: registered Berkshires, Tamworth, Registered Kune Kune, and Hereford.

"Jo" keeps saying, "No WHEY am I doing this!" Lol!!! Im glad its progressing a bit safer for you but I am more convinced than ever that working with the new potential milking cows as babies and onto being heifers along the way to becoming first time moms is the best route. No matter how gentle some of my huge beef cows are, just one kick from them and you're toast kind of battle ground makes me want to toss my pig-nosed-hat in and say, "nope! No WHEY!" 🤣😂

We edit out the cussing lol😂 no it is a team job training her. We were spoiled with the jersey. Kelsey was able to do everything herself.

Wow you can't taste the difference- well yes it was just a first top off. So glad I got to see the kick bar in action - you definitely need a proper milking extension so Joelene know her boundaries That may even help with the kicking. Great Job though Guys- bit nerve racking at first though 🙄🙄. Cheers Denise- Australia

That first milk tastes the same as goat milk. The creamier the milk it has a better flavor and mouth feel.

I was hoping a kick bar would fit a Dexter. Glad to see it does. Preparing for our first cow. Which kick bar did you get?

I trained a heifer and used a one quart stainless pan with a handle. So if she kicked it I didn’t lose that much milk. Btw great job

I would put 2 4x4s in the back, like you have in the front, and then 1 2x4 or a pipe going horizontal from the front to the back, always making sure that whatever you use horizontally is above the udder, never under, because if the cow drops or does something weird, your arms will get trapped and they'll break. I would stay away from using cattle gates and excellent video as always.
Ps: You forgot to mention what your favorite milk taste is between cow or goat?

In our next barn we will be able to do something better. Your suggestions are exactly what I want to do. But I am maxed out of space. Of course if Kelsey got rid of some goats we could have a better set up. I have it set up now so it is working! Next video😄

I prefer jersey cow milk. We think Jolleen gave us some milk fat this morning so I am sure it will be even better

@@SweetBriarFarmMichiganI missed what happened to your jersey? We used to have one, made the best butter too.
I'm sure things will get better once she gets the hang of being miked. Thanks for sharing!

So our newJersey has just had her calf and is not impressed with us milking and i see your cow can’t kick device sucks as bad as ours. They still kick. We use the milk Machine and stay on the hose to move it quickly. She’s learning fast and only a couple solid blows has she delivered to us. Did you add the additional sides to the stanchion. We done use one but are very tempted to add one as leads just stretch too much.

Yes we added some gates. the playlist has the entire process. (Milk training cows)
I will be modifying our setup this spring with some solid gates.
We have actually been working with a company in Ireland on a new anti kick device we will be sharing soon!

Is it worth risking life and limb? A gallon or we will be in the ER. Funny, not funny.

There is always danger working with cattle no matter the task or how big or small the animal.
