The Ancient Greeks believed that Persephone's tragedy explained the agricultural seasons and the death of crops in the winter. Persephone thus became known as Queen of The Underworld and Queen Consort to Hades.
There is some fun history to suggest that Persephone was the ORIGINAL death deity, not Hades. That his name and the lore between them came later after a deity thought to have been Persephone was already being worshiped.
