Create your LANGUAGE LEARNING PLAN - learn a language on your own efficiently

  • From my experience as a teacher of English and a learner of English, German, and Spanish, I can say that learning languages on your own IS possible. However, you need some basic knowledge about how languages can be learn most efficiently. What I'm sharing in this video is expert knowledge that I learned while doing my Bachelor's in Linguistics and Foreign Language Teaching and that I checked later as a language learner.
    The videos I mentioned:
    My video about improving pronunciation: • My best 3 pronunciatio...
    An interview with @Pronunciationwithemma : • Interview with Emma - ...
    The narrow listening technique: reelC2R2vV...
    My own vlogs that you can watch and improve your English: • Best Vlog - It Teaches...
    Oh and one more thing. My favourite English textbook so far is SpeakOut. It's the most balanced textbook I've seen (although there's still too little pronunciation there). It comes with a lot of supplementary materials as well and there's a lot of revision. This is not a paid promotion. I honestly think this is the best textbook I've worked with so far.
    I will start offering pronunication, vocabulary and grammar courses, all with a speaking club, as well as General English group lessons around May 2024, so stay tuned! If you're afraid to miss them, follow me on Instagram: inna.in.eng...

    Great video!!
    One of the things I did to “trick” the algorithm for YT was to create language-specific accounts for it and ONLY access videos in your target language. I’ve done this for Swedish (my current TL) and a couple others, and it’s very useful to get YT to suggest TL video content.
    Another thing I’ve done has been to watch the news once I hit an A2 level in the language. I’ll first watch the national news in English from one of the major networks, then access a similar “network” in my TL (such as Univision for Spanish). Since I’ll have seen/heard the major stories in English, I know what’s going on. I can then take notes if needed for my TL. I’m not at that level yet in Swedish, but hope to be in about 6-8 months.
    Finally…I never would have guessed English wasn’t your native language until I saw the video of you speaking the 5 languages you know. In this particular video, there was only one spot that I heard where it didn’t sound like a native accent to me (I’m American but am used to British accents generally), and that was only because I was “listening for it.”
    And, as the other commenter wrote, "revision" isn't a word we'd use in American English to mean "review."

    • @innainenglish
      @innainenglish  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you for your comment! Generally, I wouldn't recommend watching the news until you're at around B2, because the vocabulary tends to be really complicated, with all the terms and often complex grammar. However, I don't believe in absolute must-do's and no-no's in language learning. So, if it workd for you, why not? For those who live in Europe, Euronews could be a great way to do what you're describing. They've got news in many different languages and I generally think it's a great idea to watch the same pieces in your native language and the one you're learning.
      Heard about 'revision' :) Well, that's the word we use in ESL in Europe.

    Its true that vlogs are useful to learn new vocabulary more easily, in my case I play those videos daily to practice the language. BUT the movies and series helped me a lot to improve listening in different accents, although I still struggle understanding what they say sometimes.

    This video cleared me , how should I practice to learn it effectively.I have been learning English since 2019, However, I m not satisfied with my improvment yet. The mistake I was doing was listening many series or watching different kind series always which are hard to understand, moreover, I was thinking the more you know the better you get in , to be honest it was wrong, now I learn less and revise more what I have learned. Because of you I'm gonna watch what is easy to understand.Thanks for the video.

    Thank you for this most interesting video. I'm an English learner and I'm often wondering why "thinking" in a second language is not usually considered as a productive skill just like speaking and writing. You can't speak or write if you have nothing to say. So, it seems to me that thinking goes along with speaking and writing, doesn't it?

    Thank you. Worth mentioning that voice recognition sometimes doesn't recognize words in your native language too, so don't be hard on yourself with a foreign one :D I have a question about flashcards, there are lots of videos about Anki & Quizlet but most of them are for beginners, like, how to use the apps, how to make flashcards "word in a target language -> word in a native language", but what about higher levels? What types of flashcards do you recommend? Should they include native language too or only a target one?

    • @innainenglish
      @innainenglish  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      True! Thank you for this comment. As for flashcards, I do want to address the issues that you mentioned in a video about flashcards. I actually even used them while preparing for the C2 Cambridge exam a while back. And you can definitely do a lot more with them than just word-translation. Stay tuned! And thank you for the questions

    • @katerinas5736
      @katerinas5736 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@innainenglish Thank you for your answer. I just feel a bit lost. Flashcards helped me a lot in the beginning of studying languages but starting B1-B2 in each language I stop feeling progress and get bored. I've tried "definition -> word/phrase", "fill in example sentence", "sentence in Russian(native) -> sentence in target language"(after I saw a video that you need to connect new information to the old one to build a network). I've tried just having a log book and re-reading phrases/sentences from previous study sessions (this doesn't feel productive at all, simple reading doesn't help). I also saw a recommendation to just have lots of input, and check the words you don't know and need, and after a few times you'll eventually learn them, and this doesn't feel right, I'm a person who loves lists and seeing how much I achieved/learned :D So I came to the conclusion that either I don't do proper flashcards or I should use them in a different way, maybe make a story using each flashcard due today. I don't know, will be waiting for your video :)

      Unfortunately, no one can answer this question for you. The time you'll need varies a lot. But if we're speaking about how much time you should dedicate to learning every week, the simple answer is of course, as much as you can :) But I would suggest at least 4 hours a weak, preferably spread over the week rather than crammed in one day

    What level of English might I have if I can understand everything you're saying (you're talking about) in this video without subtitles, but I am unable to speak accurately? Just interesting...
    I mean that I hear every word, and can write down everything you are saying accurately. However, I can not speak accurately.
    I wish I could speak without any 'thinking'... I want to speak effortlessly, without any need for hesitation or overthinking.

    • @innainenglish
      @innainenglish  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Well it's hard to say, because listening is just one of the skills. The problem is, one can absolutely be on different levels in their productive (speaking, writing) and receptive (listening, reading) skills. Well, since you understand everything I'm saying you definitely have a B1 in receptive skills. But above that? You could be at the beginning of B2, you could be full B2, you could even be C1 in comprehension. While your speaking skills could be B1 or beginning of B2 for example. But again, it's hard to say, those are just wild guesses

    • @JuliaKuzm
      @JuliaKuzm 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@innainenglish Yes, I agree with you. I definitely feel that I have different levels in productive (speaking, writing) and receptive (listening, reading) skills. Receptive skills are much higher than productive ones. Will be working on it (improving that).
