    Credit to Brad Litwin, at 0.25 you can see that the radius rod is lifted above the expansion link pivot point, hence the reason it is running backwards.

      That does not mean it is in reverse. The valve gear is actually in forward. The eccentric crank is leading and lead and lap lever is for inside admission. This means that it is set up for indirect motion Walschaert where forward is in the top part of the link.
      The wheel motion is determined by the motor and not the valve gear in this model, but the wheel motion is wrong.
      If the valve gear was to be set in reverse then A) the link block will be in the bottom part of the link or B) the eccentric would be set for following

    It's set to the reverse position. The Johnson Bar/reverser is pulled back and the radius bar is above the expansion link pivot. That's why it's going backwards.

      No, the reverse bar is set to move the valve forwards. The eccentric crank is set for indirect motion so forwards is in the top part of the link. The eccentric needs to be moved so it is following and then everything will work properly

      The lead and lap lever is the vertical lever between the piston and valve. When the radius rod connects to the top of the lead and lap lever (aka combination lever) and the valve connects below the radius rod, the movement from the piston will directly move the valve in the same direction as the piston (and will be the only movement when the valve gear is in center). With this set up, the valve gear is set up for inside admission piston valve.
      When the crank pin is at the 6 o'clock position and the eccentric crank is leaning forwards, the eccentric crank is following the main crank pin (when looking at it is as the wheels running forward). This would be direct motion for inside admission valves where forward is in the bottom part of the link and reverse is in the top - this is the typical way it is set up.

    I could watch the valve gear on a steamer move for hours at a time, just watching all the pieces move. I would love it if someone looped low angle footage of a real steamer's drivers as it traveled down the tracks.

      I have a metal version of the Walschaerts gear motion. This wooden one is very nice! I don't remember seeing that at the Charles River Museum. Though I do remember the live steam locomotive models!

    The way it is set up, the wheels should be rotating forwards as it is set up as inside admission, indirect motion Walschaert gear.
    Or reset the eccentric so it is following (it is set up for leading) and then the engine can run in reverse.
    The way that it is, the valve motion is for forwards yet the wheels are rotating backwards

The wheel rotation is wrong for where the valve gear is set. Change the eccentric crank so it is following or put the link block in the bottom part of the link and now it is in reverse

    A cool looking model but without narration or subtitles most people have no idea what it's doing, this is the "transmission" of a steam engine. It's the throttle, and neutral and reverse, could use closer examination and explanation.

    Glad I wasn’t the only one to notice it’s running backwards. It’s sad to see such grate craftsmanship go to pot. The motor running this is going the wrong way. This would be pumping steam to correct such movement. The eccentric crank should lean slightly back at bottom dead center as well. In this manner tho it does almost correct the problem. But does not as the timing of the valves are way off.

      The gear is in reverse, the bar is pulled back, the radius rod is in the top sector of the expansion link, the wheels are in reverse. You can't see enough cylinder detail to see if it's inside admission. Odd to see it running backwards but the model looks correct.

    Indirect Walschaerts i believe. I always get confused with Stephenson. I believe the army, soo line, and other railroads used this valve gear brand.

      Stephenson is easy to identify by the 2 eccentrics and rods rocking a curved link. You're right that this is a Walschaerts, which always has the single link to the crank motion, usually with a crank arm rather than an eccentric.

      The vast majority of locomotives, anywhere in the world, in the 20th century, used Walschaerts, particularly on outside valve gear. (I think many US railroads used Baker, which was an adaptation of Walschaerts). Stephenson uses two eccentrics, which were easy to arrange on an axle for inside gear, but looks quite odd for the rare cases of outside Stephenson.

    What could have been a great 5 minute video is a poor 1 minute video. We're watching because we want to see the levers in motion and learn how it works. What we got was too brief and in and out and not paying attention to the engineering of all the components.

      Thanks for your comment, Mark. I shot that video almost 9 years ago at the Charles River Museum of Industry & Innovation in Waltham, MA. I apologize for the video's deficiencies, but I admit I had a poor understanding of the machine. The video has collected 75 comments so far, positive and negative. Many have commented it's running backwards. I had no control over that.

    The puffing sound is on the rods right like the tender engines and tram engines tender engine there puff sound I loud have a lot of rods and tram engines are much slower because it have a smaller boiler and they have have side plates some other dont they have side plates because on the cow cachers oh I for got the puff sound is very quiet un like e2 tank engine or for short thomas the tank engine have rods on the bottom so that's why there not the strongest there piston it's at the buttom some times there puffing sound is fast some time are old I'm just teaching ya old chap now chop chop good bye my phone got broken

      +Matthew Palermo Thank you for the correction, but the information card posted at the Charles River Museum in Waltham, MA identified it as a Walschaerts, and that's all I had to go on.

      Yeah, they're very similar and easily confused so I can see how it wasn't labeled properly
