    I actually saw an ACU leading on the Cajon Sub last year. Bummer I wasn't able to film it. I always loved those "Big MACs", first cab tour I ever got was in one. As good as the look now though, us western guys miss them. Great work, bro!

    Craziest thing Aaron is I saw 7729 today in a virtual railfan video at Altoona and your video popped up on my recommendations later tonight. Guess that bad bish is still in service

    All of the units that Norfolk Southern purchased from Union Pacific were actually SD9043MAC's with the 710-G3B's and have the same horsepower as any SD70 series.
    The real SD90MAC's & SD90MAC-H's have been long gone...The EMD 265H's were perhaps the worst locomotive prime movers ever built,from EMD at that.Starting from scratch on developing a four stroke engine while having to be compliant with EPA regulations wasn't a great thing.At least some of the 265H's were modified and actually are used in Asia and China with alternate 210H's.
    The SD70ACE-T4's technically do use 265H's themselves,but they are completely rebuilt in the format of Caterpillar 1010J's.The major differences are the crankshafts and fuel injection.They are the predecessors to the C280's & 3600 series.

    Canadian Pacific had a bunch, but sold them all off. Too many operational/mechanical issues. Many of those were delivered to CP as kits. Very nice video!

    • @Trains21
      @Trains21  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I know.. 30 of them are being rebuilt to SD70ACUs too!!

    • @Slim_Slid
      @Slim_Slid ปีที่แล้ว

      Canadian Pacific completely got rid of their SD90MAC's & SD90MAC-H's just like Union Pacific did with theirs.
      The EMD 265H's were the first,last,and worst four stroke engines built.They had no harmonic balancing which resulted in exceeding internal vibration and caused severe damage to critical components and counterparts.The 265H's were modified later on but only are still used in Asia and China along with the 210H's.
      Union Pacific retired all of their SD9043MAC's but three dozen of them were purchased by Canadian Pacific.
      Canadian Pacific has rebuilt alot of their own SD9043MAC's into SD70ACU's.
      Norfolk Southern also was buying SD9043MAC's from Union Pacific to rebuild into SD70ACU's,but then sold most of them to Progress Rail.

      Trains21 UP did run SD90MAC-H’s back in the early 2000’s. Here’s the only known recording of two H units powering up the Tehachapi hills in Cali: th-cam.com/video/j-9wiYbbzhY/w-d-xo.html
      UP ran both the SD90MAC-H and the SD90MAC-H II. With both of them having poor reliability.
      Also for some clarification, the SD90MAC’s with the 6000hp 265H equipped had the letter “H” at the end of the model number. I.E. SD90MAC-H. Therefore the only difference between the SD90MAC and the SD90MAC-H was the prime mover used.

    So it was down graded to 4400? Also, some of the AC6000s are still 6000 horsepower.And the SD9043MACs were decently successful

    • @Trains21
      @Trains21  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a matter of opinion.

    • @Slim_Slid
      @Slim_Slid ปีที่แล้ว

      SD9043MAC's had 710-G3B's just like the SD70M's & SD70ACE's with 4,300 HP.
      The original SD90MAC's & SD90MAC-H's from Union Pacific and Canadian Pacific with the 6,000 HP 265H's were absolutely unreliable,they had no harmonic balancing and had extensive internal vibration causing severe damage to critical components.
      Union Pacific rebuilt all of their AC6000CW's into C44ACM's,replacing the 7HDL-20's with 7HDL-16's,basically degrading them into large AC4400CW's.
      CSX derated their CW60AC's into CW44-6's by reducing the horsepower while retaining their original 7HDL-20's.
      The AC6000CW's had fragile turbochargers that were designed by Deutz MKM,that's why they needed replacements every three months by being sent to the shops.All the time they were dealing with oil leaks,crankshaft backing pressure,or burnt/fried seals.

      Trains21 ah that’s my favorite one as well

    • @egeg-nr4qs
      @egeg-nr4qs 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The mechanical difference is the 80 had a conventional 2-stroke 710 diesel prime mover with roughly 5000hp. The 90 was supposed to have a new giant 4-stroke 265H diesel prime-mover with 6000hp (that didn't really pan out). The visual spotting difference is the number boards... 80 has them above the windows, the 90 has them on the nose.

    • @Slim_Slid
      @Slim_Slid ปีที่แล้ว

      The SD80MAC's all had 20-710-G3B-EC's with 5,000 HP while the SD90MAC's & SD90MAC-H's had 265H's with 6,000 HP.
      The SD80MAC's were made in lesser numbers because Conrail was the only railroad that originally owned them.After the merge,about half and half went to Norfolk Southern (17) and CSX (13).
      Later on,CSX did a trade deal to get SD40-2's added to their roster by giving the dozen of their SD80MAC's to Norfolk Southern.Norfolk Southern awhile back sold the SD80MAC's to Progress Rail and all of them were torched and scrapped.
      However,six of them were spared and acquired by Canadian Pacific and are in storage being used as parts donors for their SD9043MAC's and SD70ACU's.
      Chicago Northwestern was actually in the process of getting fifteen SD80MAC's but the orders were canceled by Union Pacific after the merge and they were only interested in the AC6000CW's by that time.The SD80MAC's were actually the only reliable and successful locomotives with the highest horsepower from a single handed prime mover.
      The SD90MAC's & SD90MAC-H's were what caused the downfall of EMD,they were built from scratch starting with their 265H's.The 265H's were the first and last four stroke engines that EMD made.Even though most of the sharade was due to EPA regulations,the 265H's had no proper harmonic balancing therefore they had aggresive internal vibration which caused severe damage to critical components and counterparts.
      Both Union Pacific and Canadian Pacific discontinued them after what happened,and EMD retained back to the 16-710-G3B's with the SD9043MAC's.
      The 265H's are actually still around but have been modified and are used in Asia and China,along with smaller 210H's.
      The 265H's are still here in North America but in the rebuilt format of the 1010J's that Caterpillar put in the SD70ACE-T4's,the engine blocks are the same.
      General Motors sold EMD and Greenbriar Berkshire took aquisition,later on was when Caterpillar became their parent company after buying PRLX,which EMD is PRLX's subsidiary.
      The SD9043MAC's are still around,but most are rebuild SD70ACU's.
      Canadian Pacific still has all of theirs which are rebuilt,but they additionally have three dozen more that they purchased from Union Pacific.Norfolk Southern also was buying them from Union Pacific for the rebuild program,but then they sold the majority to Progress Rail.Any of them out there besides that are owned by PRLX,CIT/CEFX,or shortline railroads.
