It isn't a cycle. The mother wolf in the intro was always Neva & the pup was always Bruma. The game you play is Alba's memories of raising Neva, like how the memories of the times we shared with our loved ones flood back after they pass. If you pay attention to the images in the credits (especially the early ones) you see how Alba found Neva as a pup hiding from the rain under a bush.
Want to go into this with zero spoilers or anything, but I'm so glad you are playing this! GRIS was one of my favorite video games ever, so I am hyped for Neva
Spoilers and discussion of the ending ahead! I'm still absorbing all the themes of the game, there's a lot to unpack. Watching other people's playthroughs and theories helps. I went back and forward in the "the masked entity represents winter" one, specially because the names of the wolf and her cub both are tied to winter ("Neva" means "snow" and "Bruma" means "haze" in Spanish). But it is defeated in spring 🤔 Either way, the motif of cycles is very strong, from seasons to nature's life and death. Until mid-game, I really thought that Alba (the protagonist) was some kind of immortal entity as well and each wolf accompanies her for centuries. If they last roughly a year, it makes it all more sad 😭 I'm sorry about your cat, hope she makes it through. Thank you for the video and sharing your thoughts.
Spoilers: that's why I actually love the secret scene you can find by collecting all the flowers and finding the secret room in spring on top of one of the trees: . : . : . Alba sitting with a grown up wolf who I suggest is Bruma with her 5 healthy puppies while a white butterfly passing by
Personally I don't believe in the theory of cycles (loop thing), I think that at the beginning they are showing us the end... Look at the wolves, Neva is white and Bruma is soft gray (cuz her father is a gray wolf). If you watch the first scene again you will see that the puppy is soft gray, so it can't be Neva and her mother, because Neva was always white, since chapter 1. Sorry but I don't speak English, I hope you understand my idea.
@@pablob.3670 Yeah it seems pretty clear to me that the beginning is a flash forward or a dream Alba has, but there's nothing that suggests this groundhog day theory people seem to have come up with out of nowhere. The scar on the eye was supposed to be the aha moment that lets players know Neva is the wolf from the beginning, and then there are the images in the credits which clearly show her finding Neva as practically a newborn.

@ I think this game makes people so emotional that their critical thinking skills go out the window temporarily.
