On a repot into a larger pot like this one, I cut the long, leggy roots in order to get an even, compact rootmass because it contributes to even, compact growth on top of the tree. When repotting into the same size pot, we take off all of the outer roots in order to allow the tree to grow new roots, absorb nutrients, and stay the same size.

@Hvalborg1 I was 11 when I first got interested in bonsai, but had no money, no help, no nothing. Kept trying and by high school, was able to keep one juniper alive. Then college and law school got in the way. I started practicing bonsai for real when I was 26.

The aerial roots will grow naturally on most varieties of ficus, other than Benjamina. Benjaminas will only grow aerial roots if they are in a tropical, high moisture environment.

Keep an indoor ficus near a south facing window, unless you live in the south/southwest. I really like the idea of annotating a video. Just give me a really slow 360 of the tree (2 min or so) and make sure I can see the branch structure.

@yboben I usually add a little extra organic matter at the base of the tree to encourage moss growth, and then keep the tree in partial shade. If the conditions are right the moss will grow naturally.

I'm thinking I'm going to re-pot my ginseng ficus this spring. I'm curious as to what the soil mix contains?

I haven't tried chopsticks -- I assume that you would thread them through the roots and then run wire over the ends? "Chop and clump" ginseng ficuses are popular in the U.S. and I wanted to see if I could develop this one, just to give other folks some ideas. We'll come back to it in a few months or next spring, depending on how fast it grows.

This may have been previously answered, pls forgive, but are the finer particles in your soil meant for moisture retention? Here in FL our mixes don't contain many fine particles, we also bare root our ficus when repotting.
Unrelated, at about 5:40 you can hear a baby mockingbird in the background.

I got one of these but it's leaves are very far away from the stem how can i get them closer can you prune it right length (removing all the leaves) before spring or should I just make it bit shorter and kind of force the leaves to grow lower?

@yboben You can buy trees like this from Bonsai Boy of New York. They have a website. I do not sell trees, and this particular tree is not for sale since it belongs to my wife.

I was actually thinking of doing the same thing. I just have one question, since its a ficus it can be put indoors right?
If I get my ficus I will do a video on it.
Maybe you can give it some pointers?
