The “East” has been making adult animation for basically my whole life. Fans don’t need the West to make it. It would be fun if they joined the party but anime fans are not sweating it.
Lord of the rings was written as a stand in for the English history that was lost due to invasion, the land is literally meant to be like the English countryside, so the lore and fantasy should be western not eastern. They should have stayed faithful to Tolkien writing and world building.
Anime fans are the only people who could like the film, it looks like the average anime rather than what western audience expects in cinema. Look at the box office, traditional 2D anime style animation isnt attractive to movie goers in the west, it is viewed as for tv, not IMAX or any cinema.

The fact that this and Transformers One will be the only 2 theatrical animated movies that will flop says a lot. Especially considering that both are movies in franchises that are heavily live action. The main lead in the story of War of the Rohirrim in actual Tolkien lore is a nameless character. The actual story focuses on her father Helm Hammerhand. But WB decided to pull a Rings of Power with the story.
Except not at all. That whole war started because of that one female character that Tolkien didn't even name. She's a center of that whole story, why shouldn't she be a main character? Also there's barely any fanservice, so it's like the opposite of Rings of Power.

I know that _Castevania_ has a great story, but I wasn't drawn to the animation. No pun intendant. _Arcane_ and _Blue Eye Samurai_ are at the tippy top a far as I'm concerned.
I would love to see Grace review the Bakshi animated LOTR from 1978, taken in the context of when it was made, it's severely limited budget, running time, etc. As a Gen-X Tolkien fan, that and the Rankin-Bass Hobbit were all we had. We won't mention the nightmare fuel that was "Return of the King," although it did give us the pretty hilarious song (in an inadvertently BDSM sense) from the orcs, "Where there's a whip, there's a way." 😆In fact, I now think Grace should do reviews of the lot.

There are multiple weekly anime on Japanese TV all year long that are orders of magnitude better. This is also what happens when you try to force the expansion of the franchise by mining the Appendices of the original. But, when you are just trying to hold on to the IP rights...
Aragorn rode with the Rohirrim then went to Gondor to serve Denethor's father, the Steward Ecthelion under the name Thorongil. He persuaded the Steward to send a force to attack the Corsairs of Umbar. However, his success and influence upset Denethor II, who succeeded his father four years later. Meanwhile Thorongil disappeared, likely exploring enemy lands south or west. This is a good story from the Appendices.
Graces review is a wonderful surprise. 1977 Hobbit is still stands as the only LOTR animated movie worthwhile I do recommend Tolkien fans immerse themselves in Frieren Beyond Journey’s End. A visually stunning anime that embraces LOTR values.
I liked it but I'm a big fan of the books and the appendices and anything that Tolkien ever wrote about the world and so I was stoked to be seeing any small slice of it in a visual medium. I will admit the animation was under par compared to what you would expect but I enjoyed it all the same and I'd say it was an improvement on the Hobbit films overall. It didn't have CG Dwarves rolling around impossibly in barrels so that was a major win for me. I'm a bit puzzled out of all the parts mentioned in the timeline of the Appendices this was the part of it they decided to turn into a movie but again I sort of feel like beggars can't be choosers at the moment.

There are reports that this movie was rushed to and through production in order to make a deadline. We're lucky it was even passable. They made this movie for one reason. To prevent the theatrical rights reverting to the original copyright owners. It could be worse. It could be that classic Fantastic Four insanity of a movie back in the day.
I've always loved Tolkien and I auditioned to be an extra for Lord of the Rings, as many did in New Zealand. However, I will be avoiding this turdburger, and I hope it draws some toxic internet fire away from Wicked and Moana.
Probably the reason that there is so much Eastern influence in the art is because it was produced by Japanese company with Japanese creators and not in Hollywood or California.
I used to watch Skins. It starred Nicholas Hoult, Kaya Scodelario & Dev Patel and the 'kind of trying to make it' Jack O'Connell. I dont remember this other guy at all.
What people seem to ignore is that the director is almost exclusively known for anime shows with female leads, like Ghost in the Shell, Moribito, and Napping Princess. The main character in Moribito is one of my favorite female anime leads, and the Major from GitS is quite well known. I would have been surprised if the main character had NOT been female with this director at the helm. And that's not a bad thing - the franchise would be quite stale if there were some kind of rule what the protagonist can and cannot be. This should have been a slam dunk, but unfortunately it's pretty obvious no-one involved with this understood what people liked about the original trilogy. The gender had nothing to do with it. A bad movie is just a bad movie.
