So sad but thank you for helping the little one. I had a similar wild hedgehog who was out during the day and very weak and wobbling. I took him in and gave him a warm place to sleep and food and water. He initially ate and drank but later died after a few days just like yours 😢. I suspect he needed more nutrient than he could take in on his own. I have since learned in such cases it can be helpful to offer re-hydration fluid - a solution of warm water (2 pints) with some sugar (1 tablespoon) and salt (1 teaspoon) offered very carefully (to avoid drowning) into the mouth with a pipette. Good luck for the future and don't give up!😄
So kind of you to leave a comment. I have a special rehydration powder with elektrolyten, similar to yours, I need to add a bit of sugar but it can keep them going. Maybe I had to do it the same day...it was so very stressed already. Unfortunately it died so quickly. I used the support the hedgehog organisation to bottle feed baby hedgehogs at home but o boy they are so vulnerable! If they are sick and people bring them in.. 70% dies... never imagined hedgehogs are so weak and still can maintain a healthy population in the wild.
Yes, that is the sad side of caring for hedgehogs. You tried so hard to save him. And every morning when you looked into the cage, you were afraid that he might be lying there dead. I know that, it takes so much energy. And I can hear in your voice how sad you are. I had 4 sick adult hedgehogs this year, luckily they all survived and I was able to release them back into the wild. Luckily, I have a good veterinarian here who not only operated on the hedgehogs, but also treated them for many days until they were ready for me to take over. My dear hedgehog friend, you can be sad and discouraged now, but I ask you not to give up. The hedgehogs need our help. Warm greetings from Germany ❤
