This course is fantastic, thank you again. The chanson de geste appeared in France around 1050. It was performed, sung or mimed for a variety of audiences, from the nobility to the common people. These songs, mostly anonymous, were written in Old French (northern France, sung by trouvères) or Occitan (southern France, sung by troubadours). Lyric poetry, on the other hand, is only sung in Occitan.
Some say that King Arthur, his knights and his castle were in Brittany (the western tip of France).
