Almost cried remembering the great jazz clubs that were everywhere a few decades ago. Loved taking my wife, may she rest in peace, out on Friday night to enjoy the local jazz scene.. Great to see how musicians from other countries have continued to play / share something todays youth should hear.. Jazz.....
As a drummer, I've been listening and playing Jazz, Jazz/Rock, and Fusion for over 40 years. This is as good as it gets! Senri has become one of my favorite drummers, but the folks she's playing with are definitely in the same league. Amazing Music!!!
Drummer and piano player of many years here and I second that motion. Her and everyone she plays with are my favorites. Senri is at a place of freedom that I so envy and admire. She's worked HARD for it TOO. I'll tell ya; one of my absolute favorite things about her playing and musical thinking: The pulse. Way too much solo drumming (especially modern stuff) lacks that pulse. Lots of very cool flash stuff that seems to be just a big unhomogenized pile of unrelated rhythmic statements. Not with Senri. There is an underlying, steady, consistent pulse in EVERYTHING she does and man is she locked into it. Doesnt matter the complexity of what she is doing or the long lengths of some of her rhythmic statements where she's out on the edge, she's ALWAYS locked on and ALWAYS knows EXACTLY where that downbeat is.
Das beste Konzert das ich seit 25Jahren gehört habe. Diesen Leistungslevel kann man mit Worten nicht bescheiben. Ihr göttlichen MUSIKER. !!!!!! DANKE !!!!!!
Man, that laid back bass player is surely laying some bouncy badass riffs. I was pleasantly surprised with Ami's playing because I previously only saw her with the Jazz Avengers and with four sax players in that group it didn't give much a chance to showcase her skills. Senri is of course Senri meaning sensational as always. Damn awesome performance by everyone.
I've followed Senri Kawaguchi for years. it touches my heart to see her playing with this group of talented musicians. they sound so good. As someone who grew up playing Piano, Alto & Tenor sax in orchestra, concert band, marching band and Jazz Band, I truly LOVE Miku's sound. Her tones and bubbly play-style is just heart warming. I love it. Tenor Hunter, instantly love this song, went to Spotify found her and added this song to my jazz favorites play list. So good, thank you for sharing this concert, really enjoyable! :)
The soprano sax player is playing just beautiful stuff! Also cool to see Senri playing more laid back stuff. I've never seen her in this context before. Tbh I haven't heard her play anything but chops- laden things. She's a complete player for sure. She's is listening and reacting so well to get that cohesiveness happening and propelling the melodies.
Whoo, that gave me goose-bumps. Incredible musicianship! Amy, Miku and Senri definitely spend lots of time studying the 'old' masters. The more I listen to Japanese bands from different genres, for me it seems that the future of "hand-made" music - regardless of the style - lies in the hands of female Japanese musicians.
Amen. Have seen Miku Yonezawa in a small club in Kyoto, and I mean small, maybe a dozen tables that sit two, but one because of covid. She was extraordinary, just fabulous. I've seen an array of top jazz musicians over the past five decades and she is in that number. Have also seen Kawaguchi play in the same club - she indeed a genius.
@@jon87583 Yes Jonathan, in that proper context, I agree with you 100 percent. The love and passion for the music performed and displayed here, cannot be denied and only served to be inspirational.
I attended this concert . It was on April 22nd 2021. My fave part was Senri's Elvin Jones style on the first number. In Tokyo jazz the band behind the headliner is usually different for every appearance. (An exception is guitarist Ogawa, who is there at every Yonezawa gig.) I suppose they do a short runthrough of the tricky parts before the show but mostly this is sightreading, even for stuff much more complicated than this. This is a nation where millions of people have learned to read music starting at age three. I made sure to see this band as I saw them two years ago at Haneda airport, thought it was great, and it might be years before this combination comes together again. I particularly wanted to hear ebass player Shingo Tanaka again. He's terrific, as are all the T-Square/Caseopia alumni. He sounds better here than he did in real life! Going direct into the board or close miked to avoid all those room echoes gives him a lot more presence.
I'm watching the second-last song, called "Infinite Possibility" by Senri ... superb song, which finishes with a beautiful unexpected major9 chord. But the most shocking thing is that everyone playing this most incredibly difficult piece of music looks like they're having fun. Even the superhero on bass (those glasses aren't fooling anyone - we all know that wherever there is crime and injustice, you'll be there)
Glen Miller, Stan Kenton , Maynard Ferguson......Guys like that, .....GIs Left a golden egg in Japan that is now blessing this world. God Bless Japan . Thank you for the flower and the fragrance. We only get so much perfection and miracles in our lives. Thank you for sharing these timeless moments.
Brilliant combination (Ami, Miku, Senri and great support). John Coltrane would be happy to see Miku play (tenor hunter). Jazz Avengers, TGJ and many others are already big in Japan. I hope to see you again in Europe one day......
Absolutely amazing the caliber of this musical creativity! Just beautiful!! Wow! These musician are amazing. I love it!
There is a posting of Miku Yonezawa along with Senri Kawaguchi: Abyss at Clapps. A grammy award level performance. The solos, all of them are beyond measure. Yonezawa just sails into the aether.
Thank you for sharing this wonderful performance. It is always such a joy to see talented musicians elevating their art to unchartered heights. I hope to see much more of all of them in the near future.
I can't edit my last comment. Not sure why... This reminds me of Weather Report, in the respect it is unbridled. THESE are the only band at the centre of the universe when they are playing. No egos. Just a TRIP. Love the polite applause from the audience. Living on a higher level. Thanks band!
26:25 Miku is my fav sax player of the jazz avengers, she masters her instrument sooooo well, and the way she moves / dances on stage (playing or not) is joyfull.
Ich habe dieses Superkonzert bestimmt schon 30 mal gehört und ich finde es jedesmal noch besser, absolute Weltklasse, für mich das beste Konzert was ich bis jetzt gehört habe

Great performance. Amazing musicians, all of them. With a better video recording (camera positions and video editing), this performance would certainly deserve a Blu-ray production.
11:11 & 11:30 Just Wow....!!! Miku Senri & Ami Amazing Arrangements and Performances - You Guy's Are Simply Next Level & Such Beautiful Playing and Imagination too...!!!!!! SO So So impressed and Very much enjoyed...!!!!! :) :) :) :) :)

Man do I dig this bass player. He doesn’t over do it and his comping is subtlely sublime.
It's Tanaka Shingo from T-square

Excellent concert! This band would fit in any top-tier summer jazz fest anywhere in the world.
Daryl I am with you on that. I came across a gem of a place in Dnipro Ukraine a few years back and it was of the same calibre of this!!
That sax player is having the best time even when she’s not playing. Everyone is so amazing in this session!

I agree! Massive talent there!
Listen to Tokyo Groove Yoshi for some high-calibre Jazz-Funk from Japan ;)
I also like Riyoko Takagi, Bandmaid, and D_Drive.

Don't forget the soulful Kaori Kobayashi.
This video would be my desert island choice! Brilliant!!
This band is just wonderful. Superb feel and flow!!! Thank you!!
Thank you, Japan, for your tremendous contributions to jazz and rock music! 🙏
I don't see or hear any contribution here,
Cause it's all been done already. But there's no doubt Senri and company
lays it down like they own it.
@@modernmangoman6476 at the very least, Japan's contribution is helping keep both alive.

Jazz (enka) was popular both before and during the war. It was internationally popular. I've seen jazz 78s in Malaysia.
Hallo Benjamin Miller
Danke für dem Upload.
Die Band ist so gut.

The music scene in Japan is vibrant. This was outstanding and I have heard many variations of Scarborough Fair but this one is right up there!! 😎
Noel le, excellent version….yes
Loving the drums and bass on this. Senri astonishing as always. The bass player is a revelation. Thanks for posting this!
Those Girls Are So, So Gonna Change The World Forever And Ever 😍😍😍😍😍😍
Senri is such a good drummer.
One of my personal favs.
ME TOO
Die drei Mädels sind ja wohl absolute Weltklasse, noch nichts besseres gehört, aber die Miku Yonezawa sticht da sogar noch etwas hervor

Now THAT is JAZZ! Fantastic job by everyone!! Thank you!
Agreed! Modern jazz at its finest.
