I once had a male cat, Baxter, who went blind and a female dog, Stella, who went deaf. As they grew older together they became inseparable, and they spent time quite happily enjoying their lives, both inside and outside, to the extent that you would not have realized that one was blind and the other deaf. I didn't fully appreciate how interdependent they were until the cat died. Stella became completely disoriented, and never recovered. She developed dementia and went downhill soon after. It was in hindsight that I realized that only together were they whole.

Funny story about a cat, Buttons and a dog, Mitzi. They got along well, each kept to their own space EXCEPT when it came to food. As ANYONE knows, cats want dry food before them all the time BUT you have to keep the dog from it because the dog WOULD eat until it EXPLOSEDS! Our solution was to put the cat's food on a small metal table pushed against the wall on one side and fridge on another (we then put the extra food on top of the fridge). Buttons could easily jump up to the food but the Mitzi could not, leaving her sitting on the floor looking longingly up at the cat eating. To be fair, when we put more food in the bowl, Mitzi did get a small handful as a treat. This particular day I was sitting at the kitchen table as Buttons jumped up on the food table. There was NOT enough food in the bowl for his liking so he got my attention by stretching up toward the top of the fridge and looking at me as if to say, "If I was a little taller I would not have to bother you BUT, if you will!" I got up and got Buttons more food and when Mitzi heard the food box rattling, she hurried into the kitchen. I gave her the usual handout and as Buttons started eating I went back to what I had been doing. I could hear Buttons happily crunching food but after a short time he stopped. I looked and saw, Buttons walk to the edge of the table and check if Mitzi was still down on the floor, she was, looking up at him with her sad puppy eyes. Buttons then walked back to his bowl, gathered a mouthful of food, walked back to the edge, opened his mouth and let the food fall to Mitzi. Then as Mitzi gobbled up her cat gift, Buttons with a look that said, "THERE! Now I have fed the damm cat!" went back to eating.

Penelope is clearly smart/resourceful even for a cat, and I've NEVER met any cat who was kept out of a room by a fence, especially not such a short one. Clearly first time pet owners, this was super cute! It strikes me that they sure got a crazy cat for their first experience 😂

It’s been my experience that cats and dogs get along just fine given time, with the cat usually ending up being the boss.
Your introduction with the baby gate was perfect. Some people try to keep them away from each other and pay more attention to the new animal. That is where the jealousy starts. That "no no no" or pushing the older animal away. They don't understand what they did wrong and why you don't want to give them attention now. Great job!!!

Looks like your cat is part bengal, who need a lot of play time. I have a Siamese who is similar. She gets along with dogs very well. I’ve experienced that with certsin breeds, especially breeds like Siamese snd bengals. What a sweet friendship they have
That's a short haired tabby-- I have a boy that looks identical. Mine didn't cost $3000 or come from a breeder. I adopted him from my local shelter, and they handed him to me for free (it was free adoption day). Just like Penelope, he is gorgeous and loves a good time.
I had a cat who I wouldn't exactly call mischievous, but Penelope knocking a treat off the counter for Juniper reminds me of her a lot. Her name was Boo and alongside out dog, Toad, they were a problematically good team.
Boo would jump up onto the counters and open up some of the cupboards to get stuff like beef jerky and she'd knock it onto the floor for Toad to rip open for the both of them. It was always a mix of pride on how well they did together and frustration cause if we didn't give Boo what she wanted she'd always be trying to figure out a way to get it for herself, whether we wanted it or not.
"Penelope is definitely a trouble maker." Cut to a shot of her literally trying to climb up a window!! Lol.

Yeah, I think they must be her first pets- kinda a tip off when she tried to separate the cat from the dog with a fence, lol! As a lifelong cat owner it took me a second to realize what was going on and I was like...wait, a FENCE? Lol 😂 But that was just funny to me, she clearly loves them both, and everything worked out in the end!
I had to chuckle that she seemed at all surprised that Penelope was just jumping over small barriers. Obviously she hasn't figured out that cat's gonna cat yet.

Haha for me, it was the other way around.
My dog found a kitten in a drain during our usual walks and refused to leave. We did the usual checks and asked around for an owner; nothing turned up. So we decided to keep the kitten since my dog and the kitten had grown attached to each other over time.
That said, they both egg each other on to be naughty in the house. Admittedly it’s annoying at times, but seeing them living each moment with each other for companionship, I don’t think it’s that bad at all.
I had a dog, kitten once myself. Their antics were hilarious 😂 😃 my husband didn't think so. Unfortunately they're both gone know 😕 😪
My dog and new cat are comfortable w each other. New cat was a stray and she just bulldozed into all our lives w so much determined affection! My dog was a bit stoic and confused for the first six weeks or so. Now, she sleeps with him and even on top of him! Follows him everywhere and he is accepting her as someone to protect. Pretty cool huh !! 😸🐕

When they brought Juniper into the home, but separated them with a blanket-covered gate, Penelope must have felt like a kid seeing their parents bring home a big-screen TV and proceed to lock it in a closed room.

I brought a 2nd cat home almost 2 years ago. While still in the intro phase, I used THREE stacked gates. The new one found a way to sit on top and still terrorize my resident cat!
When I first brought my kitten home, I could barely access the area with my other cat without her making her way through the fence to follow me. I was worried the two would fight but it turned out I was worried for nothing.

One fine day with a woof and a purr. A baby was born and it caused a lil stir.
I already had two cats and when I adopted a puppy, he soon became my third cat. One day I came home and found each of them curled up in a ball in one of the corners of the coffee table.🤣💖

I had a doberman raised by two cats (9 and 10 years old) with four kittens (one planned). He napped on top of the kitchen cabinets, upper cabinets; snug fit against the ceiling, but then cats like close areas.

My cat and two dogs used to stuff themselves into one bed to sleep together. I purchased a larger bad, they kept going to the smaller bed. They wanted to be curled into a tight ball.
My dog is OBSESSED with my cats. They mostly ignore her. But when I have foster kittens, even newborns, Gidget grooms them and snuggles them and “guards” them.

This is so awesome! Usually I see the cat starting to act like a dog. I've had 2 cats like this at different times in my life and both acted like dogs. I was dying when I saw the dog washing the cat and then window watching together. This made my day!

As someone who had a cat and a dog pair in my house, I can confirm this is exactly their relationship. My cat was there first, so when we got our pup she just took on the cat personality. Lol. It's hilarious and they're always causing trouble.

It all depends on what cat and what dog really. I know 1 dog that will never have a cat friend simply because when she sees cats, she sees food.
When my German Shepard was 5 months old, the neighborhood stray (neutered male I thought was neighbor's) took a liking to him. I also had an older GSD but the cat totally ignored him. They were such pals and the dog taught the cat house manners, they went out together, came back in together, cat NEVER got to scratch or get up on the table or counter. First and last cat I ever had as an adult.

Dogs and cats can definitely get along! When I was a kid, I slept outside in the summertime. My dog slept on my legs and my sister's 3 cats slept on my dog. They are together, played together, went around the farm hunting rabbits together...
It's like my pug.. he'll never chase a stray cat since he was raised and was nursed by mama cat along with her kittens.. My pug is trained to do he's job in the cat litter.. lol.. I've kept pictures of them.. since I thought it was cute..

I would love to have a dog but live in a condo and would have to pick up their warm 💩. If I could litter train them. I would absolutely get a small dog. And a companion cat, who doesn't like to share. ☺
Cats & dogs getting along (or not getting along) have more to do with us, and the environment we provide for them in our lives and homes, than any instinctual predisposition they might have. Acceptance, patience and love are the keys to success here.

It's a lovely bond that should be cherished. Animals are products of their environment so they will naturally get along with other species (for the most part!) quite harmoniously if they are given the time & space to get to know one another. Same as us really! 💕🐕🐈

I've had dogs and cats living together, multiples, all of my 60+ years. Dogs and cats can get along fine; they don't have to love each other, peaceful co-existence is great. But it's really nice when some of them bond like this.
I had a Chihuahua/Rat Terrier mix named Honey (aka, my little Squirrel) and my best buddy cat named Champ (aka, Champers). Champ was a young 20lb male when little 2 pound baby Honey was brought home. I was worried Champ may hurt her, but they bonded quickly. They would play together, groom each other, and sleep together. They were a great pair and such a big part of my life. Sadly, Champ passed away just shy of his 20th birthday a couple years ago and little Honey went to puppy heaven just last year in 2020. I miss them both so much. Life is so different now and a strange void that will never be filled in quite the same way.
