  • In this beekeeping class, the Dr, Larry Connor discusses the process of creating new bee colonies through methods like making splits and increasing colonies. He emphasizes the importance of using local bees adapted to the environment rather than relying on package bees from distant locations, which may not be cost-effective or suitable. The instructor explains the dynamics of swarming and the benefits of managing colonies to prevent natural swarming, which can lead to a loss of bees but benefits the environment. He covers various types of splits, such as walk-away splits and dirty splits, and the significance of queen cells in colony formation. Methods to maintain a balanced hive and prevent disturbances while managing bee colonies are highlighted, along with practical tips for beginners and seasoned beekeepers alike. The importance of having additional colonies (nucs) as resources to support beekeeping activities and mitigate losses is also discussed. The session concludes with advice on choosing local, well-adapted queens and colonies to ensure the health and productivity of the bee population.
