Woodturning: Accidents Happen...

  • Thanks for watching and subscribing! This is my 5th filmed project, and it was a doozy! In hindsight, I should have kept the face plate on the piece in order to line it up with the tail stock in order to avoid being so off-center on the mortise.
Let me know in the comments if you think I made the right decision to remove the remains of the live-edge. It's a pity to have lost so much of the burl in that process, but I think the end result is pretty nice.
Please consider subscribing, liking, commenting, and sharing! It helps my channel grow, and I very much appreciate the feedback and support.
All of the music used came from:

    Thanks again!

Beautiful! A gorgeous piece! I kept thinking that it would have been nice to see the broken edge pieces glued back in place - like an old Greek vessel - until the finial appeared! Thank you for sharing.

David, by now you should know that turners NEVER make mistakes, but at times we do have to deal with unexpected design modifications! Great piece!

Hey that’s one of the beauties to doing this I would think. The creativity that goes into this. I’m amazed at the quality and brilliance of the different designs. I’m not someone who does this type of Art. Watching these I’d love to give it a go. Perhaps at some point as I have no option as of now for an place to do it. Keep up the videos please. Their a joy to watch. Thanks.

For me to watch you work far exceeds the end result. If you fail to recover, adapt and proceed for most people ends their project in failure. No one would have known of the mishap if it was not shown. This not only is a great skill piece but frees you up to go farther the fear factor once over come will allow you to go far beyond and your dream piece will start to take shape. Looking froward to seeing your skills which are already top notch push the envelop and make your art sing.

I am a visual artist, and I'm not happy little accidents when painting, but I do love a piece of unwanted construction when it gives strenght to the piece. This vase looks even better with the crack, it has depth. I fully support not patching it up with resin, IMO resin turns a beautiful piece of wood into a chinese cheap shop knockoff. Love the outcome.

Yes, you might have done a more original piece without breaking the tip of the vase, but originality and authenticity are flexible terms my friend, you've saved the piece, that what matters the most, and after saving it, you revived it like a phoenix from the ashes to a beautiful masterpiece... Well done Dave :)

You Sir, are a master wood turner. I think that's the most beautiful piece I've seen. It deserves to be in a high-end art gallery.
