Wonderful ! This Mikado set created by Mr Ito is top range in the traditional Kyo Maki-e. I had the oportunity to hold and admire all three pens before handing them over to a collector. Maki-e is incredible and as Bernard Lyn wrote " Maki-e is an art for the soul". The time spent is merely a Western way to look at it. It is the heritage of craftmanship, dedication, perseverance and talent that makes this Maki-e what it is: outstanding.
SE QUE NUNCA TENDRÉ UNA PIEZA ASÍ, PERO ESTOY SEGURA , QUE MI MANO AL SOSTENERLA TEMBLARÍA COMO UNA HOJA DE PAPEL… SOLO PARA ARTE SUPREMO Y POESÍA, DEBE SER UTILIZADA UNA PIEZA , DE TANTO VALOR ANCESTRAL . I keep coming back to this video, probably my 20th time. The more I know about urushi, and the more urushi pens I do, the better I understand the skills of this Artist. Even preparing the pen for his work is still a very difficult thing, and probably is done by his apprentice with "only" 10 years of experience.
I think these fountain pens are true works of art, like a painting on canvas can be. It is beautiful to watch the work done by a real person and not by machines that print as if we were all the same.
Thank you so very much. Sadly, while I learned of the techniques for painting on wood (about them and the artistry), when I lived in Japan 1968-69, I did not have an interest in fountain pens. A Japanese student sent me a gift of the commercialized Maki-e (a Pilot pen selling in the $150-$180 range), and I treasure it because he was one of my favorite graduates. Yet, while I knew these special artists, likely considered National Treasures themselves, did incredible work, your video really brought it all to life. Dating to a period before William the Conqueror brought Normandy to England, it is special indeed!
The pen is worth every penny the workmanship is second to non I had to watch a second time around with the speed of the play back slowed down to 75% just so,I could watch the workmanship of the paint brush the layers of gold and then silver along with platinum makes the pen expensive but it is his talent that he has put into it that has made it priceless I could watch this type of art work all day every day just so I could learn from him.
We tend to take things of beauty for granted , knowing what it takes to make it : craftmanship , presision, patience and taste makes us apreciate more. Thank you for your presentation
The artistry here is priceless. The years of experience this Japanese master craftsman has invested in his work would put most other cultures to shame. It’s no surprise why one of these pens can cost upwards of 30 thousand US dollars.
That was so beautiful. I didn't know they were handmade from scratch like this. somehow in this day and age you can't believe that a company would have such hand-crafted products. I wonder if we could ever have this kind of craftsmanship on high end mechanical pencils.
If this gentleman hasn’t been designated as a living National Treasure by Japan yet, he should be. What he creates are masterpieces to be treasured by those who are fortunate enough to own them.
Thank you for displaying this, it was a delight to see such a Masterpiece come to life before our eyes! To Master Ito: Watashi wa anata no sukiru o sonchō shi, anata no kōgei-hin ni watashi no kansha to yorokobi o hyōgen shitai to omoimasu. Anata no yubi ga nan'nen ni mo watatte subayaku ugoku yō ni shite kudasai. (I really hope I didn't mangle that too bad... [I honor your skill and wish to express my appreciation and pleasure in your craft. May your fingers be nimble for many years to come.])
Someday, I would love to at least hold, if not own, such a pen. Excellent craftsmanship, the likes of which are rare in the modern age of disposable, mass produced goods.

Mad respect to the artisans who have the patience and skill to do this work. I will never be able to afford it but it I will never again wonder why these are so expensive
It takes 7 days just for a quick cure of the layers. If I'm not wrong, it takes 14 days to completely cure a layer. Some layers are half-cured so they are tacky but won't smudge when powders are applied. Combined everything, and it can take easily 6 months to a year for 1 pen, depending on the detailing.
Very nice and highly skilled creation but good only for looking unusable (except for the most special of occasions). Use will wear away at it unless it can be encased in hard replaceable clear covering that will resist more frequent use
I'm actually getting a fine art degree, and i love this. Every art expression is important not only because of the craftsmanship, but because of the context where it is made.
Looks like a wonderful piece of art, and functional! But the translation in the captions is pointless. What is e-urushi ? Laquer, varnish ? Essence of the Gods ? Swan-piss ? Still, love to have one of these. Beautiful craftsmanship.
They're 16 at the time I'm writing this ! Sorry I may partially agree with some of the "dis-likers" on a conceptual level : what's the fucking use of all this painstaking effort and meticulous accuracy? For a "pen" ? Probably costs a few thousand dollars, some that some fat-ass would show it off while signing contracts !
A.H. Shukry You can say that to luxury watches and sports cars. What's the use if you can get an ordinary one for a lesser price, of course it's for the craftsmanship and art, duh.

It's vital that this traditional art is not only preserved but training the next generation of craftsperson to take this to an even higher level.

You could say it's the penultimate video!! Okay, I'll get me coat....! Thanks , it's brilliant.🙏

Thank you. The incredible craftsmanship is one of many reasons I love Japanese pens, although I could never afford this one. Lovely to look at though.

Marvellous artesanal design and task. Many thanks for sharing your recognized experience with all of us.

For those that don't know, this type of pen sells for around $13,000.
+christschool so i either buy a car or a pen!!!
+christschool And I wonder how much of that this chap gets?
A 13,000 car would depreciate. This pen probably won't. So, really, this pen is a better choice.
A lot.

This made me cry. I wish I could give such special attention to anything in my life like this.

I thought namiki-pilot is the best makie brand, but I was wrong. Truly, Sailor is the best fountainpen brand of japan.
Mad respect to the artisans who have the patience and skill to do this work. I will never be able to afford it but it I will never again wonder why these are so expensive

I read “tale of Genji”. Still have the book. I love traditional crafts and worry that many, throughout the world, are now lost.

not hours not days, more than two months.
Whomever got this pen should know how lucky he/she is!
Whoever*
Using "whomever" in this instance is incorrect because it is the nominative case. "Whom" and "whomever" are for the accusative case.
so awesome!
Beautiful.
🇧🇷🇧🇷 EXCELENTE TRABALHO, PARABÉNS

Played the video at 2X speed and it still looks normal.
This is like my dream. Every step is “gold powder”.
Don't know about hours, but he did measure the time in months, of which there were two spent making this incredible pen.
Mastercraft....period....
do you sell these pencils how much????
Maki-e pens typically sell for $10,000-$20,000 United States Dollars. Convert that to whatever currency you use.
