    You're video is magical! All I did was watch it and right at the end of the video my USB powered fan worked again! I'm sure that I'll have to replace the capacitor though since that's what you taught me is the usual problem when it experiences slowdowns.

      It sounds like your fan was probably overheated, and has a resettable fuse, and when it cooled down enough, it started itself back up automatically. If it overheats too many times your capacitor may die.

    I was just looking for a way to fix a slow moving fan. So what I did was open it and then put an air canister and blew into it until it was relatively clean and then put everything back and the fan moves at its usual speed for those who are interested.

    I’ve been fixing fans for 20 years, the problem I find is the shaft bearings/bushings get dirty or dusty and the lubricating felt dries out causing the shaft lube to overheat and tarnish causing fan not to spin freely.
    I usually install connectors on all the fan motor wires to ease disassembly in the future, then I polish motor shaft in area of both end bearings, then brass brushes inside the bearings as well as relube the felts on both ends with electric motor oil.
    I’ve also started buying 70’s era fans and doing this same process because the motors were far superior in design and longevity compared to the garbage of today

    Lubrication took care of my fan's problem without replacing any parts. My fan would only rotate when forced by hand - and then only very roughly. I disassembled the motor and greased the shaft where it goes through the holes at the front and back of the motor. I could immediately feel that smooth rotation was restored. When I reassembled everything and powered up the fan it ran normally again.

    COuld you explain how to use the mulitimeter (what settings, etc) to test continuity of the fuse? Thanks.

    • @conceptedge
      @conceptedge  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Obviously, with the power disconnected from the fan, you can check the continuity. Most digital multimeters have the continuity test, which applies a small current at low voltage through the component. For example, on my Fluke multimeter, If it is open (bad), generally there is no beep, if it is closed (good), then there is a continuous beep. Another way to check the fuse with a multimeter that does not have a continuity test is to remove the fuse at least from one side of the circuit (desolder one lead from the circuit), and set your multimeter to measuring resistance (Ohm or Greek letter Ω), and make sure the range (measurement unit) is set to the lowest (there are usually 1Ω, 1000Ω, 100000Ω and 1MΩ) put the two test probes across the two leads of the fuse. If it shows a very low resistance like 1Ω to 0.1Ω it's good. If it shows something like infinity, or 0Ω then it's bad.

    Dang - you are the first video I found showing taking off the casing to expose motor.... I did that to mine and cleaned and fixed it BUT I put it back together I didn’t place it proper and need to take it off again BUT it was a major pain in butt to take casing off because where your front plastic plate is held on with just a couple screws mine snaps on with tight plastic ‘tabs’ that almost caused me to mangle the fan the first time I took it apart... I suspect there is an easier way besides wedging a screwdriver between the plastic and wiggling while pulling, pushing and cursing to detach the two pieces but I haven’t figured it out and was hoping TH-cam had the win. Le sigh.
    Thanks so much for the very informative tutorial though, I learned new stuff and I’ll come back for more at some point.

    • @keenansmith6163
      @keenansmith6163 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Joanna Therese Sarmiento Simple. The capacitor is broken or the wires to it are damaged. A capacitor is like a kick start in the beginning to get it moving, and while moving the capacitor still works, it's like a little boost. If it's broken you'd have to spin the fan yourself to get it moving like yours.

    that thermal fuse is NOT "resettable". once it opens its toast. in my experience, the thermal fuse is the prime culprit in small motor failure. they will often fail just from age. easy test is to connect the leads together bypassing the fuse & see if the motor runs.

    • @conceptedge

      You are correct that some thermal fuses are not resettable, but many modern appliance come with the resettable version like this: www.littelfuse.com/products/resettable-ptcs.aspx

    hi, recently my fan started spinning slowly even at highest speed and i have replace the 1.2uf capacitor with 1.5uf and the fan is able to start properly at spd 2 and 3(highest is 3) but it started spinning slowly at spd 1. any advice is it safe to replace overrated capacitor??

    • @conceptedge
      @conceptedge  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      That can happen sometimes, don't worry. If you need speed 1, you can get it started at speed 2 and put it back to 1 once it starts and it will keep spinning at speed 1. You can use a capacitor with higher capacitance in general, as long as the voltage rating is the same or higher.

    • @weijiewu4559
      @weijiewu4559 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      thanks for the query but whenever i try to put it to speed 1 i will turn slower than before. is it other problem causing it than the capacitor?

    • @conceptedge
      @conceptedge  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      At speed 1 there is more resistance. The capacitor can vary in its capacitance (it's normal). Depending on the quality of the capacitor the variables can exceed 10%. If the fan spins slower at speed 1 at start-up, it's just not getting enough current from the capacitor to kick start the motor because at speed 1 there is also higher resistance by design. At speed 2 and 3 the resistance lower so even with the same capacitor more current can flow. I think a 3~4 uf capacitor would solve the problem.

    Hello. HELP. Maybe you can help me with your talent. I have a Rovex brand fan. Reference VT10-40 / V608. Voltage 230 V ~. Frequency 50 Hz. Intensity 0.24 A. Power 55 W. Class II. Air flow 65 m3 / minutes. 2 son come from the electrical outlet that plugs into a wall socket and are connected under the fan on the plate to turn on or off the fan (plate called contactor I think ..... choose between 3 speeds and start or stop). From there are connected son on the small black cube (I forgot his name, it's a kind of square or black rectangle with 2 rods where are welded son) and 5 son of different colors but difficult to identify because I'm color-blind (2 kinds of colors 1 dark green and 1 light green, 1 white, 1 light yellow and 1 rosé ... Frankly for me it's difficult to identify colors with certainty, so I'm not sure of their colors) . In short, this 5 wires should normally be connected to the motor of the copper coil, directly on the copper. But that's where I have a problem because the 5 wires supposed to be connected on the coil motor are all detached and I can not identify the exact place where I have to reconnect them (or weld if it's done on directly). Please help me, need explanation with these 5 wires, where should I connect them on the copper coil? Inside the coil, there are 16 rectangle-shaped notches one after the other in circular. It's inside where the rod is centered with the fan magnet. The coil is made of red copper and normally it would have to leave the small copper wires but they were not visible as if they had been cut or torn up which makes it possible to connect the 5 wires. So I can not identify the exact place where to connect these 5 strands therefore to run the engine by sending electricity

    my fan sometimes slows down like, there was a power shortage but when i try tu push the head of the fan it started seeding up again and if i let go it slows down again, btw my fan is almost like on 24/7 but not really it's like 18/7

      +kenjesson yamagami If you haver an under-voltage condition because there is not sufficient stable power, then it is normal the fan slows done. However, if the fan slows down with stable power and cannot spin normally at start up, you need to change the capacitor.

    You didn't mention one of the main reasons why a ventilator doesn't work: the absence of oil/grease in the bearings!
    Just try to get access to the bearings and oil them with penetrating or household oil. Don't use WD 40! Don't use too much oil and don't let any drops fall on the copper parts.

    • @conceptedge
      @conceptedge  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is another main reason, but most people already know about that.

    ... Dont want to be too hard on this guy, he does explain how common faults affect fans, but as a trained technician, I must tell everyone that all capacitors HOLD A CHARGE. The charge needs to be SAFELY bled off (drawn) from the capacitor first, or (an easier way) is to wait for the capacitor's charge to dissipate... Usually 1 hour (with all power turned off to the device). Even then, a pro would still check (with a multimeter) to see if the capacitor was no longer live. Not sure why this guy edits his video... We aren't shown how he swaps out the capacitor. My advice: If you aren't SURE what you're doing with mains voltage equipment, leave it well alone. We love this - its small and th-cam.com/users/postUgkxlmCcACUKg6nJKF53Fy9qNgPlHio1azE1 light so you can carry it around to another room with ease. My son can operate the switch super easy with the 3-speeds. And the openings around the fan are not wide enough for tiny fingers which is perfect if you have young ones in the house . We would definitely purchase this again.

    Great vid. A neighbor gave me a Vento brand floor fan that she said "gave up on her" plus she was moving out so she was tossing all sorts of "goodies". The fan caught my attention because I have serviced (lubricated mostly) over the years all of my fans and have yet to cause more ecological problems by dumping them in the garbage.
    Well, I took the fan back and lubed it as usual but it would not start up (capacitor most likely as you say) but spinning by hand, spun verrrry slowly with the juice connected. At least it spun as before it was very hard to do so.
    I am going to buy the capacitor first as you suggest, and see what happens and altho Vento is a decent brand (cost around $800mxn pesos or $45 usd at local Mexican Home Depot) as seen by the construction of the motor--very solid, it too had all leads soldered to the capacitor but not prob for me. Will update progress.

What is funny/ironic is that many companies moved out of the country because of tight environmental rules.. and we exchange that for products that don't last and wind up in the landfill.

      +1000uf I guess that your fan had this problem where you turn it on and it doesn't spin at all. The same thing happened to me with my Lasko 16" Oscillating Pedestal Fan 2524 (Older Model) on Wednesday, 3/16/2016. Does this use the same kind of type or something inside the fan motor with the wires and stuff? I do want to get my Lasko 16" Oscillating Pedestal Fan 2524 (Older Model) fixed and get it to spin again at a Fan Speed I choose. Can you tell me in the comments how to repair my Lasko 16" Oscillating Pedestal Fan 2524 (Older Model)? I wish to get it fixed.

    How to fix:
    Step 1: throw fan away.
    Step 2: go to a local antique store and find a vintage/antique fan in good working order.
    Step 3: use said vintage fan in place of Chinese POS

    • @conceptedge
      @conceptedge  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha, it certainly is easier, but even the vintage fans using motor starter capacitor will need to replace the capacitor with enough time of use. The capacitors don't last forever, but good ones tend to last longer.
