I so remember this video! This video came up when I was looking for a quick recipe for a bean pie. Since then I hve been following u. Ur a inspiration to so many with ur gifted talent of original Afrocentric jewelry.... 🕊️
I happened to run into this video and I'm glad I did! I grew up in Los Angeles county and I can remember my dad buying these pies in the pink boxes and I remember loving them :) I was just talking about these the other day now I have to try this recipe! Thank you for sharing.
Thank You for my blessing a lot of people will not tell there trade to other, but that's how you loose your blessings, but I was telling my daughter that I wanted to make Leather Earrings and here you are. My Nephew who is Muslin will be proud of me for making Bean pies. Peace & Love my Sister and many blessings to you.
My mom makes the bean pie for us for the past 30 yrs. I will buy one from fish supreme here in atlanta sometimes but they arent as good anymore. This one lady used to make them for everyone. She used to make them even in Milwaukee but someone else must be now. I might try and make one from this recipe. Thanks
I MAKE A MEAN BEAN PIE!! Thank you for sharing though. I have to limit it cause I can eat the whole pie. LOL. I make those individuals for myself cause I love them so much.
Khadijah (kunity77) Noir I think you miscalculated the amounts of lemon and vanilla flavor. I think it was way too much. Did you mean tablespoon or teaspoon. Because for the amount of beans it was overwhelming.
Thank You for the many blessings that you have given to me, Thank you for teaching me how to make Earrings, That's what I took my daughter I wanted to make Leather Earrings but you shoulder me something new, a lot of people don't share there trade. And the bean pie will be something like the sweet potato pie. My Nephew who is Muslin will be proud of me for making it. Thank You for my blessings. Peace & Love my Sister.
I love bean pie and thanks for sharing..Could you show me how how to make bean soup..I used to go to Shabaz in Inglewood Ca but it's no more..I loved the Red Snapper and Pineapple cheese pie.Heck I loved everything even the corn muffins... :( I miss them..
Wow!!!! The blessing you have bestowed on me with the recipe....Amazing!!! I followed every step that you did. With the exception of the $20 blender...because I had a $5 food processor I picked up from a yard sale! Lol (funny but tru)...Was worried about the lemon extract, but it added to the flavor. I will be waiting for your next food recipes. Because I can't wear those lovely rings that you make. Lol!!! Now let me clean the mess I made bumping that Poor Rightious Teachers "rock this funky joint". Thank you again woman for this outstanding recipe. Stay beautiful, Stay smart, Stay informed, Stay you!!!!!!
NOW what I haven't tried was using lemon extract, I am gonna try that. Girlll, I am not in the Nation but I do love those bean pies. They started tasting different when I was buying them, so I got the original recipe from the Nation and started making my own for the original taste, but definitely gonna try the lemon extract. Now you makin me wanna make one, LOL
I kid you not. I could smell the spices that Titi was pouring into the mix! I love your accent btw :) I've never had bean pie but I have heard sooo many great things about it that I have to try this recipe! Think i'm gonna try to do this the vegan way
Salam. These pies are the best! I would love to see you prepare a butternut squash pie. Great vid. You seem so down to earth. As Salaamu Alaikumu Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh.
Salaam, to you Beloved...i haven't made a butternut squash pie before...i love butternut squash one of my favorite..my mother makes them...inshaallah i will make one and see how it turns out...supposedly its the same ingredients as the bean pie but you replace the beans with squash...Bless
kunity77 thank you. I just made 3 pies. Everyone that tastes them loves it. I'm still trying to get that perfect brown even top layer like I see on the restaurant ad in Chicago.
+Khadijah (kunity77) Noir thank you sisSTAR. I was at the Mosque Maryam recently and those pies are the best. I also went to a vegan spot where they make vegan bean pies! They are beautifully made with that brown top perfectly layered and the taste is just the same but with a lighter feel. it a perfect alternative for those that don't eat animal byproducts.
Salaam Sis. Hmmm I bought a couple of whole wheat pie crusts the other day because I want to make my first bean pie. I may not have the right equipment though. I have a nutribullet and a hand held blender that I can use in my big glass bowl.
I'll tell you what....Woman if these pies don't come out right....I'm going to drag you out to Southern California, and have you make them for me. (lol) thanks for the recipe...I've got my beans soaking now, and can't wait to try it out. Stay smart, Stay beautiful, And please stay on your channel so you can help me cook!!! Peace and Love!!!
thanks sis... for the blessings. The family here in baltimore has good bean pies. At Muhammad Mosque #6. But im looking forwards to yours. Id also like to say thanks for letting me know how much it makes.
This is pretty much the basic recipe beloved, only without the lemon extract. Never saw that used or in any of our original bean pie recipes of the NOI. Also for 2 deep dish use 4 eggs, it would be more firm.
Salaam Beloved, Thanks For your input Sis Kathy.. My mother is from the first, Temple 25, Newark New Jersey and this was a quick way she showed me...Salaam Your Sis Khadijah Al-nisa's Muhammad (Mommy) Bean Pie Recipe 2 - 2 1/2 cups of Navy Beans (Cooked or Canned which is already Cooked) wash off beans very well.. 3-6 eggs (i'm not a big fan of eggs the recipe calls for 4 large eggs) depends how big they are if the eggs are small use 6 eggs, if they are med, use 5 eggs.. 1 stick of butter or margarine 1/4 cup of flour (all purpose or self rising) I like to use self rising 2 Teaspoon of Allspice (if you like, something I like to add) 2 Teaspoons of Nutmeg 2 Teaspoons of cinnamon 2 Tablespoons of vanilla 1Tablespoon of lemon (optional) 3 cups of brown sugar (honey or white sugar can be used if you like) 1 can of Evaporated Milk Bake for 45min at 325- might be a little longer depends on your stove. (watch your pie, while in oven)
+Momma D freezing the butter is one of the ways to get that layer.. also if you make a custard bean pie the brown layer is different.. TFW Bless ~Unity
ThAnkh You for the recipe, me and my children love bean pie. We get ours out of Chicago, and when I am taking orders (for the minister of NOI in my area) people are like "ugh, I aint' eating no bean pie" until they taste it, lol. I wanted to know does it have to be carnation milk? Peace
Salaam, Most of the bean pies out of Chicago are Supreme Custard Bean Pies.. You are right till they taste it..Lol, I have never use any other milk then evaporated milk.. I'm pretty sure if you change it would taste a little different. But its best to make it to your liking.. Bless ~Unity
I use a can of coconut milk in place of Carnation milk, Earth Balance instead of butter, & flaxseed eggs instead of eggs. You can always flip any recipe to your liking. Your pies look awesome, Sis. Gotta check for the butternut squash one next.
I made this exactly as you described/wrote but it came out brown not orange. Could it because of all the brown sugar? It is no where near orange like yours.
+Khadijah (kunity77) Noir phew! Okay. I made it twice back to back because I thought I did something wrong. Thanks for the fast reply. I can't wait to try it. It's been at least 20 years since I've had a bean pie. I'm excited to try your version. Thank you for sharing. Btw, lol, I have a Ninja blender.
Hey Beautiful, I could use your help again....candied yams...I'm looking for a good recipe for some. I tried the bean pie that was The Bomb! I figured since you walked with me on that one....let's see what the woman has up her sleeve on this one...So woman could you please bless me wit that? Peace
@@kunity77 Oooooo.....Candy Carrots??? Never tried it. Please don't be afraid to hook me up.....My mouth is watering already!!! 😋✊ Peace & Blessing ❤😇🙏
Peace queen, I always was curious about what bean pie taste like. I was wondering since I'm a vegetarian. Is there a way to make them without using eggs. As for the milk I would use almond milk. And your humble opinion does this sound edible. Meaning without the eggs. Great post Queen and stay blessed.
Salaam...Some people i know said, bananas or vegan eggs replacement.. I don't know how it tastes...try it out... might be good...let me know how it works out.. Bless ~Unity
As a vegetarian myself, who eats eggs(eggs aren't usually taken off the vegetarian diet, but I'm aware that some regard it as meat)..you probably wouldn't need eggs in this recipe, eggs only act as a binder/glue..but mashed beans, as you may have encountered in other vegetarian recipes are a binder itself. You might be able to get away with adding a bit more water to the mixture, maybe a table spoon or two(just enough to replace the moisture that would've come from the eggs, but not enough that would make the final product runny).
tty23 i have made these pies without the eggs and they was not got good to me...mushy and falling apart, please use the ingredients to your desire taste...Thanks for watching Bless Unity
Unity's Art Peaces I missed the part where you added milk. So this is basically a custard pie, like pumpkin and sweet potato. Corn starch, like you mentioned in the video, would work.. Again, you just need something to thicken and bind everything together. It wont be as firm, but I've used just starch or a mixture of flour and starch in other pies and it works.
bake it about 45mi or longer on 350..depends how hot, your oven gets . it should get brown, after it has cool down , stick a toothpick in it and it should come out clean...bless TFW Unity
Hello, I'm not a Muslim, but I grew up watching Martin Lawrence make fun of these pies...and I never knew they were a real thing until I was "The Empire" and decided to google them. So excuse my ignorance, but extracts...vanilla and the like, are those traditional? They contain alcohol , which to my understanding goes against Islam(both the Nation and Islam as a whole).
You can purchase all ingredients you feel to make the pie to your desire...there are many different kind of muslims around the world, people has their own way of life...purchase vanilla extract without alcohol if you like...Salaam Thanks for watching..Bless Unity
+Jinna Alston Beloved some imitation extract contains about 35% alcohol. People buys imitation vanilla extract cause it cheaper than pure vanilla extract . as i said early there are so many different muslims around the world, everybody do things differently., There are some muslims that drink wine.. I was born under the nation of Islam, now as a 40 year old, I am muslim by Nature, and have been around so many different kinds of muslims etc...That do things, and live life different from me, I don't drink alcohol, but i do use vanilla flavor with alcohol.. so be it...~Unity
Khadijah (kunity77) Noir so you're not a strict Muslim? That's not a critic, I just know people of over faiths who don't adhere to orthodox teaching. I've known Muslims that wouldn't take medicines that contained alcohol or eat in restaurants who served pork.. i know there are others who arent as strict. FYI, even pure extract contains alcohol. I might make a bean pie for thanksgiving.
FYI I know Pure Vanilla Extract has alcohol.. I'm a tattooed, dancing, dreadlock wearing muslim... I grew up very strict, by growing up that way.. I'm not as strict with my sons now.. To be honest i really don't care what other muslims do with their life.. i know what works for me in my life now.. I'm Peace... i made two beans pies, bout a week ago.. Now i got to try those #pattiepies, hopefully they don't contain Lard..Enjoy your Pies Bless ~Unity

Al-nisa's Muhammad (Mommy) Bean Pie Recipe
2 - 2 1/2 cups of Navy Beans (Cooked or Canned which is already Cooked) wash off beans very well..
3-6 eggs (i'm not a big fan of eggs the recipe calls for 4 large eggs) depends how big they are if the eggs are small use 6 eggs, if they are med, use 5 eggs..
1 stick of butter or margarine
1/4 cup of flour (all purpose or self rising) I like to use self rising
2 Teaspoon of Allspice (if you like, something I like to add)
2 Teaspoons of Nutmeg
2 Teaspoons of cinnamon
2 Tablespoons of vanilla
1Tablespoon of lemon (optional)
3 cups of brown sugar (honey or white sugar can be used if you like)
1 can of Evaporated Milk
Bake for 45min at 325- might be a little longer depends on your stove. (watch your pie, while in oven)
Instead of a blender do u recommend using a hand mixer
Can you tell me how to make the brown layer that goes on top of the pie?
