This is the game that cemented my lifelong devotion to Michigan. I was a 12 year old living in Chicago and while already rooting for Michigan, the build up to this game and then the result was so exhilarating, I enjoyed every moment of it.
And now Michigan won the natty
I love those big shoulder pads that real football.
As a Penn State fan this wasn't one of our best games lol. I'm no Michigan fan, but I wish there was a BCS game back then because Nebraska would've been destroyed by those Wolverines..
If I recall correctly, the following year Michigan won by almost the same margin, 27-0. Or maybe it was the previous year.
It was the next season (1998). Michigan had lost 3 straight against PSU prior to this game.
This game is remarkably similar to the Penn State vs Ohio State game the year before. Two very good, highly regarded teams in the hunt for a national title, but Penn State ends up getting destroyed by teams that were some of the best of the decade in all of college football. Ohio State crushed us 38-7 in 1996 and we beat Michigan, then in 1997 we beat Ohio State and Michigan flattens us. Only difference is Penn State finished with a bowl win in 1996, the 1997 season ended on a sour note.
Ugh I was there. We were so overrated that year and we're dominated by Michigan every second of that game.

How the heck this can be the best game in Big Ten?????!!!! So many amazing things happened in this league but you chose this one to represent the big ten??? Seriously???
zhangchi yao you're 100% right lol. It was supposed to be a huge deal. I remember Penn State (I'm a huge Penn State fan) was #1 going into the Minnesota game (prior to this game) and we barely escaped with a win. Then Michigan smothered us lol 😭.

Penn State in 1997 was a good team, ranked #1 all year until Michigan steamrolled us. Then we followed that up by crushing Wisconsin and Purdue. Unfortunately injuries caught up with us and we got blown out by Sparty and lost the Citrus Bowl due to Enis and Jurevicius having to sit out due to academic issues. Disappointing end for the second best team in the Big Ten that year.
