Country Girl is my favourite song of all time - yes, I mean ALL TIME, REALLY. That harmonica outro is like going to heaven.
I believe the harmonica was provided by John Sebastian.
I was an odd kid. In 1997, I was a sophomore in high school. While most people my age were listening to Puff Daddy or Creed, I was dropping a stylus needle onto the crackle and pop of an original 1970 pressing of Deja Vu for my first time. This wasn’t because I was special in any sort of way…. It was because my parents were tightwads who refused to pay me an allowance for my household chores. As a result, I would have no money to buy CDs (the preferred media at the time) until I turned sixteen and could legally work. Fortunately, my folks had a fairly extensive collection of vinyl records, and I dove head first into them.
I remember the first time I ever played the Deja Vu album by Crosby Stills Nash & Young. I began with playing the vinyl on side B on accident. David Crosby’s voice faded in with a jazz scatting in a 6/8 4/4 polyrhythm.… and it was the most haunting fucking thing I’d ever heard in my life. Lyrics in three and four part harmonies began toying with ideas of reincarnation and multiverse theories. This music challenged me to do more than consume marketable products (which seemed to be the undertone of the post-grunge era at that time). Instead, it encouraged me to critically think… imagine.. dream… and to be more than a sales demographic. To this day, I prefer to begin that album on side B.
My buddy Matt and I would smoke bowls and jam acoustic guitars. We would play ’Country Girl’, and I swear that was the song that taught me how to layer vocal harmonies. Matt and I used to sing the hell out of that song, and I love that memory so much… I’d never tried to sing harmony before that, but it just came to me the moment we sang anything by CSN(Y)… like suddenly I could just do it, and I’ve been doing it ever since.
This album is so important to the story of my life, and I will appreciate for all my days.

The only American band that truly rivaled the Beatles in popularity and cultural influence. Their other offshoot bands and projects were also huge but this was the pinnacle. I was a kid at the time, but I remember these songs being in the ether, always on the radio, being played at friends houses. So many young guitarists learned these songs.
hey don't count out the monkees, while the influence might not have stuck the same as CSN(Y) they were also outselling the beatles for a couple years here in the states!
For this child of the 60’s, I thoroughly enjoyed your discussion of the album and tying it in with the chaos of the era which, having lived through it all, was quite real. Nice job.
You did a great job talking about this classic album! It is a Boomer album, but it is so good that subsequent generations like your mom and you hold it so dear. Now that's power of an album!!
Almost Cut My Hair is the best cut next to Woodstock!
The big monster of creativity that is Deja Vu. Carry On once heard is unforgettable but, for me and unexpectedly, Young's contributions get overwhelmed. Anyone singing about wanting two cats in the yard, you gotta love that.
Personally I'd have opened the album with the title track, it's incredible and well worth the time they put into it. 'Helpless' is Young's best due to the harmonies added to it. He wasn't really part of the group.
I certainly hope you've heard Crosby's first solo album, it's miraculous. He had a lot of help from his California friends.
I like a lot of the 50th anniversary material, downloaded the alternate takes and most of the demos, put them on 2 CDs of my own. The original version of 'Our House' with Joni Mitchell singing along is adorable.
The Crosby song 'The Lee Shore' should have been on the album, it does appear on the "4 Way Street" live album belatedly.
'Ohio' was released in June 1970. In July Graham recorded the break-up song 'Simple Man' and it's gut-wrenching.
What an album! I can still vividly remember our "listening party" upon release. Walked to the local record shop, because none of us could drive yet (14-15 yr olds). Back to our friend Jeff's house. Lowered the lights in his room covered floor to ceiling (including ceiling) in tie dyed sheets and dropped the needle on this beauty! I think we listened 3 times.....we had strict "rules" against stopping/starting or repeating songs etc. Drop the needle and get back! It would drive kids crazy now, but it's how albums are meant to be consumed! You would have enjoyed our listening party and our little group of hippie kids in central Alabama at the time! Do you know the story of Graham gifting Jerry his 1955 Stratocaster in appreciation for Jerry's pedal steel work on "Teach Your Children"? The guitar would later become known as "Alligator" (I think it might have been JG's first "named" guitar) and would be played heavily in the wonder year of 1972 (that's it on the great "Europe 72" album). Jerry and his friends at Alembic were notorious "tinkerers" with guitars! The guys at Alembic made so many modifications to Gator that they called it "Frankenstein"! As I've told you before, I love the "threads" that weave the fabric of these times!
I bought the 50th anniversary box set with the remastered vinyl and outtakes on cd ... there's one of the outakes cd that has "Our House" as opening and it became my youngest child music for sleep. I spent two years singing "Our House" with her before she went to sleep. She outgrew the moment, but such great memories.

This album was part of the soundtrack of my college years in Boulder, Colorado….a real center of the counter-culture at that time. Incredible memories. I am so grateful that I was young and present at that place and time. The downside is that I am old now. But I still wouldn’t trade….. that was a great time to be young. It’s so terribly sad that all that optimism and good will dissipated…like smoke on the wind.✌️
One of the greatest albums ever made. Country Girl, Helpless, Carry On, Teach Your Children, Almost Cut My Hair, etc. all epic songs. Thank you for covering this historic release.
I disagree about all members being equally talented. For me multi-instrumentalist Stephen Stills was the clear heart, soul and creative engine that elevated this group to the heights. His lyrics, arrangements and literal genius in production and song-craft made him the most talented by a country mile.

I remember my instructor in the leather making shop would play both sides of Déjà Vu all the way though during the class period, then repeat and play the two LP sides all over again.
By the way, I have been a vegan since the age of 13 and now try to avoid anything made of leather. Microfibre suede is just as comfortable and much less expensive to clean.

"Graham Nash David Crosby", a 1972 album by... Graham Nash and David Crosby (you guessed it) is also awesome. Just packed with great songs ("Blacknotes" forever in my heart).
I just wanted to give a shout out to Matthew's Southern Comfort's cover of the Woodstock song. It's a fine version of a great song. It splits the difference between the original's quietness and CSNY's more chaotic version.
There aren't many modern songs that have three iconic versions (of course the songs of the classic American songbook have many versions available)
FYI the couple on the Woodstock album cover wrapped up in the blanket ended up marrying and still have the blanket. Within the last two weeks the woman passed away.
I'm not a Neil Young fan, but this is an awesome album, and you did it justice in this review. My favorite work from some of them was the Crosby, Stills, and Nash album I bought as a kid in high school. I still have it! It captures the essence of the sixties for me. I have so many great memories of illicit teen behavior associated with it.
McKenna nailed what's great about CSNY
I’d just started ninth grade when my friend’s older brother played this one night at her house. It blew my mind! I memorized every single song and still sing them. And they all lived an hour north in Laurel Canyon. Good times.
I bought these records when they were first released and I still love them. We had in my city in the south of Sweden a fantastic record shop with imports from the US. You really must get a copy of the first David Crosby solo as it is absolutely wonderful. The musicans are amazing with all the famous west coast names - Jack Casady on bass is a dream come true. I really enjoyed your Woodstock series, as well as your other videos, and all that is left for you now is to watch Ang Lee's movie "Taking Woodstock". I'm sure you will love it and it is not a documentary.

@@abigaildevoe You really should hear the self titled debut by Moby Grape. It is, in my opinion, one of the most impressive debuts ever. When I was 13 I had some surgery and when I woke my eldest brother sat by my side holding up two LPs: Moby Grape and Dylan's John Wesley Harding. I made a very quick recovery.

What's amazing about this period in time for all four artists is that this album, while amazing, is that they all had recorded fantastic solo albums around this time as well. Crosby's "If I Could Only Remember My Name..." in particular is a standout. Love the videos, Abigail. Happy to be a new subscriber.

This is my second favorite album, it was my father´s favorite album(when he was 15, he has born on 1961), the last year I was looking through his records and I saw this, I heard it and he gifted it to me. I love the woodstock series! My favorites of the album are woodstock, almost cut my hair and our house.

Great assessment of this album. I can't say how amazing being alive in the 60s and 70s was regardless of the political mess it was. Just walking outside, the air had a beautiful feeling to it. I was born in 60 so I rode that decade through grammar school. We were such little hipsters. We were so into the music and this album... whoa! It was big and had every emotion in it you could imagine. I was a bit of a romantic in my very young years and this music kept me covered. Loved this vid... subscribed!
my grandma was in her teens/20s in the '60s and she says it best: "it was the best hair, the best clothes, and the best cars, and they were all for cheap." i'm inclined to say it was the best music too. thanks for subscribing!
Greatly entertaining review again. I have to admit,my fave version of the song "Woodstock" is that of Mathew's Southern Comfort.
Deja Vu trivia fun fact (that I was surprised you didn't mention!): Carry On was a reworked version of Questions, a song Stephen Stills wrote for Buffalo Springfield. Their original version was on Last Time Around. I love their version although the organ on Carry On is haunting and gives it more gravity and a dream-like ambiance.

The RSD Deja Vu alternate takes is pretty freaking amazing. Some songs stripped down. Different vocals and tones really put you in the 60s and what it was like to create this masterpiece. If you find it, grab it!

The single Stills/Young album and the several Crosby/Nash albums are well worth listening to.
I look forward to these VM shows, and they never disappoint. I learn so much about albums I have lived with for so many years. The only disappointment am taking away from this episode is that all this time I thought my copy was an original release. It has a brown cover. Sending this your way… 🚰

I've got to commend you for the excellent job you do researching for your wonderful videos, which I am enjoying immensely. I can't help but wonder why you always refer to Nash's song "Pre-Road Downs" which I believe is about him being sad thinking about the girl he'll miss when he has to go out on tour again without her, by calling it "Pre Down Roads"?? I only mention it because this is the second video where you've done it. Anyway, you have a great channel here. It's really nice to hear someone your age taking such an interest in some of the greatest albums, including my personal favorites, in popular music history. Best wishes to you. Cheers!

Great video amazing album!! I'd say it's a safe bet to say Steve Stills played most of the keys, definitely the organ stuff. But on Our House it's probably Nash since it's his song and has that feel. From interviews I've heard with all of them Stills was the only real instrumentalist and had the best ear for arrangement.
I can stand to listen to Deja Vu from start to finish. Actually, CSN and then CSNY back to back is pretty good. I'm not a total Graham Nash fan but whatever, he's in one of the most giant bands of all time here. He does better work with just Crosby and himself. Jerry is on Teach Your Children. I think I remember he wanted to do another take and Graham said the first take was great enough. Jerry's all over Crosby's first solo record. He plays on my favorite, The Wall Song. Well, sort of favorite. Crosby is an all time favorite of mine. As is Neil Young. Stills is patchy (Manassas is superb) but got to play with Hendrix so there you have it. Carry On sounds like 2 songs put together. It has a part that sounds like a Buffalo Springfield song. Where are you going now my love, where will you be tomorrow - Oh, it's Questions. I love that chord progression. Stills uses it on Helplessly Hoping, too, I think. Or close to it, maybe not exactly the same. I love the Neil Young patched together suite of Country Girl, especially the end where the bass is really prominent before the country girl part and the harmonica comes in - the whole song really builds up to the ending - got to make you understand. I think he took a piece he was working on with Buffalo Springfield. I love the spookiness of 4+20. Stills's open tunings are awesome. Of course David Crosby's Deja Vu is the penultimate tune on the record. 1,2,3,4.. If I had ever been here before. Under the ground. Do you know? Don't you wonder... what's going on....down under you? The phrasing, lyrically and musically out of this world, jazz bass. Loved your closeout to the Woodstock series Abby!!! Seriously awesome!!! Wish I kept my records in better shape. Glad you are enjoying and sharing your collection!!!! And your fashion design - brilliant!!!
wow i'm so glad you sat through (and liked) the whole woodstock series, thank you :) this was a while ago but i remember how much fun it was to put this together. i have another miniseries coming soon, and another in august since this august series was just so much fun. interesting you mention stills referencing his work in other songs: the judy blue eyes bassline shows up in pre-down roads (yes pre-down was written by nash, but that bass was one of the parts stills went in and recorded in the middle of the night)

What an album and a great take Abigail!! Regarding editions the one done by Classic back in the mid-2000s has the cover in gold foil on black faux leather. The first David Crosby album is really good and well worth getting a copy. And to keep it appropriately "Woodstock", if you mix a water sign (Neil Young), a fire sign (David Crosby), an earth sign (Stephen Stills) and an air sign (Graham Nash) the results will be outstanding, yet keepin' it together is gonna be challenging.
WOW okay being the hardcore astrology girlie i am, i cannot believe i missed that. the CSNY dynamic makes a lot of sense: crosby and young being two night-and-day sides of the same passionate but sometimes IMPOSSIBLE coin (can't live with them, can't live without them,) stills as the grounding force. and nash, well, he's just vibing! what could possibly go wrong?

I have been a CSN&Y aficionado since 1973 when I was turned on to them at 16.. You are just absolutely spot on regarding your analysis and presentation👍. I have read their various books over the years and have a good portion of each members catalogue. Very, very well done.

Recommended book: Shakey by Jimmy McDonough. It's a major biography of Neil Young, and it's one of the best rock biographies either, it's really a hell of a story
Déjà vu, A True testament of CSN&Y’s creativity and an amazing result of perseverance, pushing through the bad stuff that falls upon us at times.
Four Alchemists weaving their magic into a strong expressive album.
The song, Our House, For me and my wife, is a fav, it brings those happy tears of joy to our eyes,
And so to the next level if you ever get to hear Nash do it live.
How one can capture that one special moment in time and preserve it in a timeless song for all to enjoy, just amazes me.

my friend mckenna (whose thoughts were included in this video) saw nash in concert not too long ago. her little clip of nash singing "our house" made my heart swell, cannot imagine what it must've been like to experience in person. that color-coding is necessary for my little pea brain, it's hard to keep all those writers straight! glad it did the video good
Hi. I’m Stew and I know you from Instagram. Glad the algorithm sent me here. As I graduated high school in ‘78, the copies of this I was around would have been black.
The acoustic guitar playing on this album is exceptional. From Stills' insistent, driving part that opens "Carry On" to Crosby's slow, descending part about a minute into "Deja Vu", there are some special moments on this album.
that part on "deja vu" (the song) is one of the best moments on deja vu (the album)!

Always a pleasure to get such hard core informative insight presented in such a lighthearted and entertaining way. Although I was bummed to learn that should have picked up a black textured copy in my upgrade from my worn normal cover issue, and bought a brown textured version back when they were just used records that all cost the same,
I can add a bit of trivia. back then, the young people I met who lived in the canyons identified as canyon people , as opposed to flat landers (subsection Hollywood people) or beach people. As a teenager visiting the area, I was very happy when somebody changed my outsider identification from the somewhat dismissive flatlander tag to beach people.

Thanks for the great video. The second half of Carry On is taken from the Buffalo Springfield song "Questions", from their last album. Everybody I Love You was the only time (I think) that Stills and Young wrote a song together. Jerry Garcia played on Teach Your Children right after he learned how to play pedal steel! No learning curve there.

Monterey Pop Festival beat Woodstock by 2 years. It didn't get the media overkill Woodstock has had over the years but appears to have been an incredible festival as well.

It's refreshing to see someone in your age group really appreciate the music that came out of the 60s. I saw the entire Woodstock series and your detailed insight is a joy to watch. I was 5 years old when Woodstock took place, so I couldn't appreciate it at the time. It wasn't until my senior year in high school when I took a history class, and we explored how the culture of the 60s became a catalyst for change and it was fueled by the literature and especially the music. Since then, I have been a staunch fan of that era. I have this album and I agree with your take on this record.

I've been listening to this incredible album since the 70's and it seems every time I go back to it is for a different reason. So many great songs with lots of airplay. Woodstock, to compare to Joni, incredible harmonies, as sweet as the Beatles and catchy melodies. Of course, I went through a deep Neil Young phase. Country Girl is a fav. As usual, much appreciation for the in-depth research you did for this installment of Vinyl Monday. Cheers.

No way! I love cool coincidences in life: I'm getting a new pressing of Deja Vu in the mail today! I do have the Alternate Deja Vu from RSD & I love it. It makes those familiar songs brand new again. But I thought I should have the original version in my vinyl collection & I ordered it on Thursday. Can't wait to hear it this afternoon. Thanks for your review!

Didn't know about the original prints on black. That's pretty cool, mine must be one of the post '77 prints. Didn't actually really look at the credits or inner fold either until just now. CSN&Y's well known, (artistic differences of opinion should we call them?), clashes make it all the more startling that they made such a cohesive and magnificent masterpiece. It, in my opinion, stands up really well today, and yes I know there are ongoing arguments about whether the sixties ideals are long gone mannnn. considering stills, young and nash all played keyboards its probably safe to assume that one or all of them contributed piano parts on this mighty classic lp..great review of a stellar album which has stood the test of time!
nash for sure played on "our house" but no one seems to remember who played on "everybody i love you" it's most likely nash or stills but at the end of the day, it's damn funny that no one bothered to write that down

That RSD release is def. worth having for anyone who likes this record, a lot of the alternate takes are really good, and they even did a great job on the cover, making it look like it was from that era. I assume the tracks are all available elsewhere, but it's nice to have them assembled here as a cohesive tribute to the original LP. I just checked, and there are still several sealed copies available on discogs for under $30. One of the few RSD releases that didn't feel like a "cash grab" to me.
ugh it's so good to know this RSD press isn't astronomically expensive now. i missed out on the death grips release from RSD 2019 and have been kicking myself ever since! (nabbing that black and white split of the money store was vindicating as hell)

My gut feeling is it’s Stills and Young shredding the guitar on “Almost Cut My Hair”……Crosby can play some rhythm, but I’d be shocked if he added any lead….
