Characteristics:
*The dwarf coconut is small in stature (5-7 m) and commences bearing earlier than the tall variety
*Dwarf coconut palms flower as early as the third year after planting and come to regular bearing in the ninth year.
*The average life span is 40-50 years.
*Dwarf or short variety which produces green, orange, and yellow nuts.
*Susceptible to drought.
*Nuts are small in size and ovoid or round in shape
*Nut weighs about 3 oz (85 gm) with 65 percent oil content.
Meaning of Dwarf Variety -
Hybrid coconuts are inter-varietal crosses between two morphological forms of coconut trees. In particular, hybrids from Dwarf and Tall, Tall and Tall varieties also generate high-yielding coconut palms. When compared to Dwarf and Tall varieties, hybrid coconut palms have more nut yields and higher copra production.
DxT coconut tree -
TxD and DxT are inter varietal hybrids. In TxD Tall variety is used as the female parent and Dwarf as male parent whereas in DxT dwarf is the female parent and the Tall is the male parent.
