Raven Rescue (Crow)

- A wild raven perched himself on our fence and squawked for over an hour. I went to see what was up with him and saw that he had four porcupine quills stuck in him, three in the side of his face and one in his wing. This video shows my Mom taking out the ones in his face. Very bizarre he let us get that close and even more bizzare he let my Mom pull the quills out. He hung around for the day and was gone the next. Best of luck Wilfred (yeah, I named him) lol
It's cool how the second time you tried to distract it with your other hand, it remembered it was a trick. What a smart, cute little bird.
Learned in a few seconds. And some people think that they’re dumb
Crows are some of the smartest animals in existence.
Yeah they are incredibly smart I think if not the smartest in the animal kingdom
Corvids are one of the few animals on this planet with that level of cognitive ability
It's not a little, it's not a cute, but it's very smart.
He's like "WAIT... I'm not ready"
True
'I will never go near a porcupine again,' quoth the raven, 'Nevermore.'
+DarklordDaUnicorn DaThird Umad?
+DarklordDaUnicorn DaThird What is wrong with you? Thats not an acceptable way to talk to someone. How would you feel if someone said that to you or your family?
Some 40k reference, i like that
+The Anathema In what way? I only saw the Discworld and the Poe reference.

Well, I see there is a raven in the painting, but not much that could link it to Warhammer 40000. What am I missing?
That's a juvenile raven! You can tell because the inside of its mouth is still very pink and the feathers around the edge of its beak are still scraggly and not smooth and pretty. Baby crows and ravens make friends with people pretty often cause they haven't learned to fear us yet. (Think of a toddler saying hello to everyone they come across in a store!)
@@sudanemamimikiki1527 the fuck kinda toddlers do you know?
@@sudanemamimikiki1527 When was the last time you saw a toddler?
@@sudanemamimikiki1527 mustve forgot alot about them
Crow not raven
@@sudanemamimikiki1527 Toddlers are just small people--everyone is different. I work in a store and meet a lot of shy toddlers and a lot of very friendly and outgoing toddlers too!
For how much that had to hurt, it's crazy he didn't fly away.
Shows how intelligent they are!
Its because he couldn't fly he was injured
@@atte9702 he could fly. He did fly to the fence to begin with. But Ravens are literally the most intelligent birds on the planet. He stayed despite the pain because he comprehended it was necessary for them to come out.
@@ShellyCline ravens are dumb it was horrified and couldn't escape
@@atte9702 Except ravens and crows aren't dumb. They're actually incredibly intelligent for birds.
Highly intelligent animals. I love it.
The fact that it probably understands the pain being inflicted on it is a result of getting the spines out and is in fact helpful is fucking incredible.
I think similar things everytime I see someone get a shot from a doctor.
Yeah Ravens are amazingly intelligent so you're right it likely knew it was for the greater good to get them pulled out.
The brain is very complex and there are multiple sections with different functions, that all develop in a different way depending on the animal. Raven are called "intelligent" because they are capable of solving problems, not many animals (except humans) are able to solve. That, however, does not mean they are able to understand the same things we understand. Because of how complex the brain is, those 2 abilities (could) be completly independent from each other. Like an A.I., for example, is able to solve multiple problems, but is not aware of itself or other beings. This is also the reason, why I really hate the "as intelligent as a X-year old kid"- comparison. It's really misinformative and not a good picture of how an animals intelligence works.
@@thatroxxguy It's the only comparison we have. You would have to be extremely uneducated to "hate" something of this nature when it's been proven as a proper comparison.

+Corpse Husband That's so awesome you came to watch this vid =^.^= I love listening to your videos =^.^=
+Corpse Husband lol you are here!
My mind went right to shit.
I guess you like that video.
So since the raven is intelligent enough to recognise us as problem solvers, I wonder if they can conceptualise some objects being of human origin? When one flies to a village, I wonder if it recognise that village as being artificial? Created by those strange ape things clad in colourful fibres. I wonder how an intelligent bird conceptualises humans in its mind.
that's a bit odd finding you here
Gotta say Wombie I didn't expect you to show up in a random crow vid
I wonder how much sooner Womble would be done editing the next bullshittery episode if he wasn't wondering what Ravens wonder.
@@anonymoussasquatch3987 You're welcome. He just needed a little push. Gotta keep him in check
Wtf I'm so lost
The intelligence on display here is so impressive. This bird A.) conceptualized a possible future where it wasn't in pain from the quills B.) understood a human could help with it C.) decided that pain it would feel getting them pulled was worth the pain it would not feel in the future D.) was able to hold onto this abstract conception of the future as it underwent the pain and stayed through it because of a value judgement it made. I know it seems so obvious, but that says SO many things about how smart it is.
Corvids are neat, is what I'm trying to say.
Haha new bird flu is corvid 19
I mean, it could just be drunk or stuck to the fence or something
@@xoxowenxox I had the same idea man's making this more deep than it is.
not that deep bro
@@xoxowenxox @Sidvart Thunakten
if it was reall just stuck there, it would have at least attempted to flap its wings either trying to get away, or as a threat display. but it didnt. It also makes no attemt at attacking.
Crows are actually very intelligent creatures.
+MGsubbie yup
They are. But that's a raven, not a crow.
+Tim M In terms of intelligence, same difference.
+MGsubbie Every rule has exceptions, i guess.

Apparently, ravens only have one volume setting: 11
Lol
Hahahahhaa this made me laugh like a child
Awe, he seems to be going “ OW!!” when a quill is plucked, but then he calms down like he knows you guys are there to help. That's really sweet.
its like me when the doctor wants to draw blood.
I squirm, I say "okay wait wait just a sec WAIT", I think about running away... but in the end I stay and take the pain.
Crazy how an animal has the ability for the same thing.
To see that more pain now leads to less pain in the future.
Now give the raven a lollipop and it'll be on it's way, but don't forget to bill his insurance.
+cvang5 BILL his insurance!
+James Poe But... crows have beaks....
+cvang5 birds don't have insurance, dumbass
+cvang5 I wonder if he has Aflac....

Ravens can remember and recognize human faces. You made a raven friend for life that day.
crows , not ravens , this is a crow in the video
@@Nicolewhite743 This is a raven. Dont yap about things you don't know
aww that was really kind of you to help that poor bird out! theyre such intelligent and beautiful creatures of this Earth. Love them!
Cute!
Tony Bomboni (ASMRer) fancy seeing you here
She went to go pet it afterwards and it was like "YOU'VE DONE YOUR JOB, STAHP."
I never realized wild animals sought humans for help until I saw the whale caught in a fishing net on youtube. You are very fortunate to be among the elite who have had the honor to assist one. Bravo! You should be proud!
You cuold assist wild animals each an everyday.
It's eventually not as exciting as this video but it's even more good you could do.
Yeah, I know. I have rescued many animals before, but I approached them, and assisted them, they've only come to me once that I can remember, it was a pregnant cat with her front paw caught in her collar [it was way to tight] she stayed with me for years after, BTW, she gave birth right in front of the whole family watching t.v. I will never forget that.
chaotbl I helped a Bear put on a sweater, sure he struggled and tried to bite me in self defense- but now he's warm!
That crow knew who they where. Crows can remember human faces up to 10 years probably their whole life. He probably has been watching them in there field with that horse for many years.

THIS IS NOT A CROW! Ravens are very different to crows. This is a raven NOT a crow!
Raven yelled because you were shooting this vid vertically!
From the bottom of my heart I appreciate you helping him. That's a beautiful raven. Once a crow asked me to help her baby. I did it was one of the best experiences of my life I will never forget.

This is a juvenile. You can tell by the pink mouth. When he's an adult, the inside of his bill will be black. Good job! These birds can read your emotions. You were calm and efficient. So he trusted you.
Really happy you were able to help! Just one question, how is the dog so calm? :)
+CinnamonYoghurt Well trained herding dog, probably, works with animals every day.
+CinnamonYoghurt If you are ever gonna get that a dog, get those. They behave so well. I am not a dog person but that breed is amazing.
+Josc990 Because, as everyone knows, only people who live on farms have enough space and time for their dogs to get the exercise they need >_>

Giving it a flower reminded me of when a doctor used to give me a sucker when I was a kid after my flu shot lol
I absolutely love how he just screams at the hand like "STAHHHP"
Corvids, of which ravens are a member of, are some of the most intelligent creatures on the planet. They are proven problem solvers. Ravens also tend to sometimes be a bit more tolerant of being close to humans - even though they are very much wild animals.
The fact that they sought out humans to help them is not an accident - they knew very well that they needed help and where they could go to get it.
Wilfrid was fortunate that you understood what s/he wanted. Skip the flowers, though - s/he wanted some meat. :D
Could I appease one enough to live with me? Maybe if it could fly in and out?
@@Libtard probably not in your house but back in idaho I befriended all the crows that lived near me, get a corvid feeder and a crow caller
@@TazyBaby by any chance could u tell me how long it took for you to befriend the corvids? I'm really cerious :D
@@Blynxe Two or three weeks of regular feeding and they’re completely used to you, A month or two after that you’re pretty much good as long as they see you feeding them
I love crows. They are one of the smartest birds. When we were camping at Bodega Bay in California back in 1963, they would just completely cover the telephone wires, and often swoop down to surprise the townspeople. It was really amazing, an experience I'll remember for as long as I live. :)
@Hyperskreem 82 Oh... now I understand.
In a crows mind, crows are the rulers of earth. They have everything they want. Humans are like cows for us. Crows come to get some "milk" from us over and over. Think of it and you will understand!
‘Way to go mom!’ What a wholesome family hahaha
I noticed how the crow knew to trust the right hand petting him but always attacked the left hand removing the needles (thus hurting him) and I thought to myself how incredibly smart these animals are. but the he ate that flower and I thought "fuck you dumb bird..."
Idk why but something about a raven being given a flower is wholesome af! 🥺❣
That was absolutely amazing. Look what the universe managed to coalesce into in that moment.

You're obviously a wonderful person for having such compassion for that animal. Well done ma'am, whoever you are!
i cannot believe you guys didn't even bothered blurring that crow's face. when he's back with his homies, he is done, will be ostracised for conniving with humans, big lapse there
oh shit, you're right dude. this fucking raven's street cred is donezo he's gonna have to have a whole new identity, riperino

he's gonna act like a galah from now on ...problem solved

They remember those who help them and even pass on the information to friends. Corvids are highly intelligent and have similar social behavior to ours. Thank you for helping it when it asked!
what nice people. thankyou for helping mr. raven! it would seem that he KNEW you were a friend or he would not have sat still for the whole dequilling! great story!
I love how the bird stayed right there and let her help him. This is so sweet : D
I tried this with a Raven but I actually had to poke it with porcupine quills so I could later help him out. It didn't work out though.

How beautiful. Thank you for being kind-hearted people and helping out these birds who do so much for us every day.
Awww bless your heart for helping! Poor guy!
A mothers soothing voice. Always calms me down when my mom talks.
Super endearing to hear the raven (crow?) shout "WAAAH!" at each quill in surprise, yet patiently sit there waiting for the others to get plucked. I wonder how much of the little dude's mind comprehended that humans can help (the flock likely saw how you interact with horses, after all!). Corvids are super cool and I hope I get to see humanity make more advancements in the science of animal brains
Thank you for being kind enough helping the crow. Beautiful to see!
Good job mom.
Please don't mind, some people comment on your voice, I think the crow was understanding well that you were there to help him and he liked you voice.
American doctors would be like "that'll be $15,000"
"Nevermore" shall i go near a porcupine again

Amazing! What a beautiful encounter; minus the pain for the bird. A great example of man helping fellow creatures. It was very appreciative.
Oh, that is so fantastic!! Your mom behaved just right with him/her. But also, he/she knew what needed to be done. Crows and ravens have very good recognition skills and memories. It could be that that particular one or a few of them in his flock, knew that someone at that location was good to them. So he thought to come there for help. It doesn't seem possible at first, but there have been studies now showing that they do indeed behave in this manner. They are the only bird that uses a tool. And one of the only animals that uses a tool within a series of complex maneuvers to accomplish a goal. I love crows. They just feel right to/ for me. And they tend to be very trusting of me in my city. Outside my city though they treat me like everyone. :)
They say ravens are more intelligent than North Dakota.
All we know is, he's called the Stig!
That's a low bar there.
I'm late finding this site, but fascinated. He knew you were helping. It hurt, but he knew and toughed it out. Trust is such a hard thing. Thank you for taking the time for him.
He's so beautiful! Thank you for helping him out!!
What a wonderful act of kindness and compassion. Thank you for caring about our fellow creatures.

What a brave little baby, so glad they got those quills out 🥺✨

What a privilege for you. You're lucky! Ravens are so beautiful and so cool. Thank you SO much for sharing this wonderful video. ;
you made a friend for life. he will tell his friends of your kindness.
It’s funny how he yells at you “owww”!!. This is why you don’t play with porcupines as they use sneaky tactics 😆
If it's so smart, why didn't it go to the vet...
:-)
Simple - because it's smarter than you.
It did not go to the vet because he was smart enough to know vets are expensive. Now he has money to pay his taxes or to buy Christmas gifts.
Ken Crooks And perhaps, he will also pay insurance.
Obamacare has pretty good porcupine quill removal coverage. Fully subsidized for all Corvids.
Amazing how Raven doesn't fly away even though it must have hurt to remove each quill.
Shows how smart he is, knew he had no chance of getting those spines out himself.

It’s so cool to see how they can understand when they need help. He flew to where he knew people lived to ask for help, and stayed all the way through, even when it hurt. Most animals, including us humans a lot of times, would try and get away or fight back. Man I love these birds ❤️
Love this :) Thanks so much for helping him and for sharing!
