- When Rainey Statum got pulled over by the cops, he had a hard time explaining what he was doing so far from Houston.
“I said, ‘I’m going to Myrtle Beach to play mini golf. No, seriously, here’s my putter’”.
Rainey is one of the best mini golfers in America, but he’s but one competitor in one of the most grueling events in his sport. Every year, professional putters from around the world descend on Myrtle Beach for the US Pro Mini Golf Association’s Masters tournament, competing for cash prizes, bragging rights, and the elusive green windbreaker.
The whole thing - the tournament, and the USPMGA itself - is the brainchild of Bob Detwiler, a businessman who’s been pushing the Masters tournament for over 20 years. And he’s hoping that one day, his event will be in the Olympics.
VICE News dropped in on the latest tournament to see what it takes to be a professional putt-putter.

ESPN used to show the TV Event, which was a hole-in-one skins round from the Professional Putters Association (a competing league) although I imagine there is quite a bit of overlap in players.

@@JustTheWarning well when other sports slowed down because of covid, and people were kind of stuck at home or small groups board and backyard games sales quadrupled in sales and cornhole was the most popular and you could also do social distancing with cornhole it started blowing up and saw Alot of tournaments
Adults playing a children's game, I would agree, but isn't that really the description of all professional sports? From football to baseball to this, its all people getting together with something in common for fun and friendly competition.

The idea of Kid and adult stuff is dumb anyways. People of all ages like anything. Label something for kids and adults ignore cuz it's for kids or get shunned for liking it.

I don't associate mini golf with kids more than I associate bowling with kids. It's a date night activity and centers around an important aspect of golf which is putting. It started in the 1920s as a means for rich city folk to play a type of golf but on the roof of a building.

Ive always wanted to see a fight break out on a mini golf course. The idea of watching two overweight blokes trying to rumble next to a windmill half their size just amuses me

I used to watch pro mini-golf 35-45 years ago, on television! It was on every Saturday. I don't see how this much different from bowling, or pool.

In the UK and the Neterlands Darts is a HUGE sport. The winner of this years biggest tournament won 500K in pounds. If you can make a fortune throwing arrows a couple feet you sure as hell could make a living out of mini golf if it's promoted in the right way.
There was a mini golf championship video that popped up on my recommended about a month ago and it was so awesome that as soon as I saw this I clicked

Rainey and Greg are 2 of the best putters in the world on any surface or course. Great people too, make the sport alot of fun.

Mini golf is way different than actual golf and having more unique swings usually helps with actually playing the weird holes

That course looked sub-par, especially for it being such a big event.
it is, i have a place in myrtle beach and that course is 5 mins from the condo. there are tons of mini golf courses (as well as regular golf courses) in myrtle beach and i would but that one near the bottom
