Nah some of those low ratings be from incompetent people, there was one for a cheap PlayStation compatible controller for $20 and the 1* reviewer was complaining that it wasn’t the official PlayStation controller because it didn’t have any of the PlayStation logos.

This is a pretty common thing in Asia where a lot of students will have one the same way people out west will typically have a hotplate for their dorm rooms, and it's mostly only really for soup or instant noodles, oatmeals or congee, and reheating leftovers with a splash of water on the bottom before you toss in the food.
Yeah, that makes a lot more sense than having this thing. I rather have an inexpensive electric single hot plate and a separate pot or pan that I can easily wash or swap out if something happens to it. Easier to repair or replace the hot plate too. I imagine the coating will wear out on this thing, and then you'd be stuck with an even worse piece of e-waste.

i bought this for my niece who is a dorm living college student as a gift. she apparently loves it. i dont know how much cooking she does, but at least it gets things done for her needs and thats all that matters.

Sautes perogi's and chicken breasts nicely. I bought it at $29.99 before price went up.
I'm in my 60s and my mom had an electric skillet decades ago. It worked beautifully and was big enough to cook 4 burgers or pancakes at the same time, and it was deep enough to handle most things.
My mom had a Sunbeam electric frying pan, about 12 inches square on all four sides, on legs. Used it mostly to make Swiss Steak. Edit: It was aluminum interior.
I got a 1970s Farberware electric "buffet server" to serve hot food at club meetings on campus. It's also meant for cooking meals, and compared to my awful "Energy Star" apartment range, it's my favorite way to cook pancakes, stir-fry, arroz con pollo, and more. And because it's good old stainless steel, I don't have to worry about any PFAS from non-stick coatings (or just the planned obsolescence of non-stick cooking vessels).
I have one and love it. works great for ramin, soups and that sort of thing. I use mine for burgers too and they are good and I don't have to clean the air oven. I think mine was a good investment for me and I use it all the time.

I own this cooking pot. I’m perfectly happy with it. I bought it to take on road trips, and for occasional use at home. I don’t ask nor expect spectacular performance. It does what I need it to do. 🤷♀️
I have one like this that I just use to eat hot pot in front of the TV. Never considered using it for anything like what's in the video. I think the temperature settings are mainly for boiling things rather than regular cooking.
We have 2 of the electric frying pans and a gas burner '' hot plate '' and the small portable oven that we use a lot. I don't use the stove at all in the summer,

Back in the 60's my mother had a square frying pan with legs to hold it off the cabinet. As I remember, the power cable was much better arranged than this.
I cooked meals as a newlywed in the 1980’s, in our Sunbeam electric skillet. Very handy especially for braised pork chops! Temperature control really worked!

I received an electric skillet as a wedding gift years ago. I loved it and it worked great. It eventually stopped working and I replaced it with an electric griddle. I LOVE my griddle!
I bought the yabano multi function pot off Amazon for 29.99 but had a 5 off coupon. It's got 2 settings high and low. This works awesome. Boils water super fast and will recommend it to anyone in need of this type of appliance.
If you want something that doesn’t require a kitchen well look no further than the Ninja Foodie Possible Cooker Pro. I have one in my semi and I absolutely love it. You’ll have a learning curve figuring out which settings and temperature but once you do, it’s really good to have.
I’ve had an electric kettle for more than 30 years and can do what this mini pot can and so much more! And it’s still available, now in 2 sizes - the one I have and a much larger one! My stove, microwave died over a year ago and I’ve had to learn a different way of cooking. I’d like to see James do reviews on Induction portables. I’ve been using mine for quite some time (even before the death of most of my kitchen) and I prefer it to a regular electric stove (can’t get gas).
When we first moved into the house, it had a glass-top electric. Absolutely hated that cooktop. We replaced it with an induction cooktop (not a portable) and that solved my problem. While I miss my gas stove in my old house, induction is more environmentally friendly and it works quite well. I've heard that some of the induction portables are good, others are underpowered.
I just bought the one with the steamer. I tried 3 things and they all turned out great. 1) I cut 1 potato in 3/4" cubes and steamed it, on Hi, for 30 minutes 2) I took frozen green beans, rinsed and steamed them on Hi for 15 minutes 3) later I added some water, gravy, the pre-cooked potatoes, pre-cooked beans, and some cooked beef slices and heated it up as a stew - worked great. The 3 cups of water boiled quickly and the heat would cut out at the right moment so there was no risk of boil over. Bought it for steaming vegetables and 1 pot meals (soups & stews) during power failures, but experimenting with it for now. The clean up for hamburgers or steaks is a lot easier than the air fryer. The clean up was so easy compared to my electric veggie steamer and faster too. The veggie steamer is going to the thrift store!

this thing is a beast. its perfect for an office/dorm. it can cook anything perfectly as long as you aren't stupid. watch your food and keep stirring it so it doesnt burn
Love mine, but I rarely use it for cooking steaks or burgers, i used it for cooking ramen, or heating soup, sometimes i used it for sautéing some veggies and sausages.
Anyone that has this or a pot like this, just put the egg in as it is preheating. It would cook as it gets to temp. Or make the breakfast meat then turn it off and cook it as it is cooling off.
Yes! This was my exact thought. Eggs cook pretty quickly so there should be plenty of time to cook it during the cool down period (assuming the preheat goes too quickly)
Same I have an electric coil top single burner and it gets hot. Like I put it to 2 and it almost burns my eggs. so as soon as it starts heating throw your egg in if you wait until it's fully preheated you're gonna burn the eggs.
I have this and just turn it on and off when I cook eggs sometimes. but honestly, you can put it on high, throw the egg in and just move it around a bit. Works fine.
My thought was to get it up to heat, turn it off and then drop an egg in when it hits around 300, then let it cook for a minute until it starts to cool, turn it on again when it hits 200 and get it back up to 300. Then it should be good to flip, you can trim it back off, let it cool to 200 as it cooks, then turn it back on to get it to 300 and by that point it should be done and ready. Key is just to back off and turn it off when it gets too hot, turn it back on when the food has absorbed the heat during cooking. A little finicky obviously, but if this is all you have to cook on, you can definitely manage it
I got the larger version of this, by Dezin as well. It's more of a pot shape and came with a steaming basket and is stainless steel, instead of non-stick. The settngs are 200W and 600W. 600W is perfect for getting water going for noodles, then turn down to 200W once you add them. Plus the steaming basket is perfect for frozen vegetables for ramen (my main use scenario of the pot). The main reason I went with this one is it's very large size, 1.6L, it's perfect for two packs of ramen and an egg added to the water.
Imagine a square pan, elevated on 2-3inch legs. It has a clear lid. The controller plugs into the pan and is adjustable. Like starting really not much more then warm and goes up to 400-500 degrees.

The “C” shape seen on the bottom of the pan may be from the heating element, with the “opening” being the ends of the positive and negative electric connections for it.
For electric gadgets, do hope you are using a GFCI outlet or cord adapter. Some of the sketchy things you've showcased need those. I have an electric skillet that I've used for over a decade to fry meats and make things like Salisbury Steak and gravy, pancakes and sausage,etc.. Wouldn't trade it for 10 of those things.
All here are correct. I have a Presto electric skillet that I got for $20, they are $35 now, but they are ceramic which is good. It can heat to any temp, is larger and more convenient than this pot. Also, I understand the lower end brands have more of that bad chemical that comes off the Teflon when heated. Glad to see Presto went to ceramic. I'm sure in a head to head here on the channel, the skillets would kill this pot any day of the week.

Sure, for the stuff he was cooking. Everything he cooked in the electric *saucepan* were things a person would cook in a skillet. Zero were things a person would cook in a saucepan.
imo induction plates are terrible, not only are they extremely loud, they are not AT ALL even in temperature. They just have two states, off or high power. The settings from 1 to 20 that you may have are just controlling how often it turns off. That casuses a lot of food to burn or water to boil over.
It is perfect, it has helped me make rice and different foods, it is a matter of trying and reading the instructions, is perfect for use with a solar power station
Hense the poached egg insert...I use it all the time...OR I use the pot to boil water and place another nonstick fry pan on top and cook my fried eggs....great for camping with a solar battery generator for sure! It is hard to find a low watt cooking stove for camping and/or emergencies....this pot works great if you get creative, lol You can not beat the 250-300 watt cooker for the price really! For eggs, try preheating it up to the highest setting then turn it off add the egg and cook only with the residual heat while unit is off. If it’s still too hot, preheat with the lowest setting, then turn it off and try. Just a thought.
I drive truck and just bought one to cook in. I mainly cook soups and noodles. But I also made sausage and scrambled eggs and it did a good job on that.I do like the fact that it doesn't get very hot on the outside so I can just eat out of it.
It's so hot because it was designed for one specific Asian dish called "hot pot". It's a boiling hot broth that the family dips various things into including thinly sliced raw steak, it has to be lava hot to cook it and other raw ingredients enough.

Used 2 to 3 times a day for a year while living in my camper after hurricane Ian. I'm a mix it all together kind of cook; worked great for me. The non sick surface finally wore out after what I put it through. Really like it but it's not for everyone.
I feel like you could have done eggs with a little oil and preheating rather than starting it from cold. Admittedly frying in oil is not how you normally do eggs in a nonstick pan but I think for this particular option it might have worked.

Always sear the fat cap of your steak first as it renders some of it out and lets you cook the meat in the steak's fat. Sometimes you don't even need to add oil if the fat renders well enough. Also makes the fat cap nice and crisp which is more tasty.
Could you set it to the low temp but turn it off before it gets to full temp? Sometimes on a stovetop, I turn off the electric burner, which still has heat, and the cast iron skillet still has enough heat to cook eggs eggs at a lower temperature. Yes a bit more hands-on if you have to turn it on and off to maintain temperature..
In 1978 bought a 1000 watt hotplate for my dorm room, could boil water, pop popcorn or cook anything with it. Since it was American made 😮, still working perfectly 45 years later.

We used to take ours on family road trips. Mom would cook dinner in it so we could avoid going to a restaurant. It lasted 40+ years.

Same. Have a electric hot plate for $15 at Walmart (cheaper than this pot/pan) and have a toaster oven. Only time I use the oven is about twice a year

When we first moved into the house, it had a glass-top electric. Absolutely hated that cooktop. We replaced it with an induction cooktop (not a portable) and that solved my problem. While I miss my gas stove in my old house, induction is more environmentally friendly and it works quite well. I've heard that some of the induction portables are good, others are underpowered.
Muy microwave broke and stove does off or high heat. So i need something else
I just bought the one with the steamer. I tried 3 things and they all turned out great.
1) I cut 1 potato in 3/4" cubes and steamed it, on Hi, for 30 minutes
2) I took frozen green beans, rinsed and steamed them on Hi for 15 minutes
3) later I added some water, gravy, the pre-cooked potatoes, pre-cooked beans, and some cooked beef slices and heated it up as a stew - worked great.
The 3 cups of water boiled quickly and the heat would cut out at the right moment so there was no risk of boil over.
Bought it for steaming vegetables and 1 pot meals (soups & stews) during power failures, but experimenting with it for now. The clean up for hamburgers or steaks is a lot easier than the air fryer.
The clean up was so easy compared to my electric veggie steamer and faster too. The veggie steamer is going to the thrift store!
I have this and love it. It works for scrambled eggs, heating up leftovers. Very fast. Cleans easy with damp paper towel.

I don’t use non-stick, but if I did, I might consider buying this. It would be good for bringing on vacation or for people without a kitchen.

this thing is a beast. its perfect for an office/dorm. it can cook anything perfectly as long as you aren't stupid. watch your food and keep stirring it so it doesnt burn
Love mine, but I rarely use it for cooking steaks or burgers, i used it for cooking ramen, or heating soup, sometimes i used it for sautéing some veggies and sausages.
I love the Design electric saute pan/pot. Perfect in studio apts, car camping, motels, etc...

Anyone that has this or a pot like this, just put the egg in as it is preheating. It would cook as it gets to temp. Or make the breakfast meat then turn it off and cook it as it is cooling off.
Yes! This was my exact thought. Eggs cook pretty quickly so there should be plenty of time to cook it during the cool down period (assuming the preheat goes too quickly)
Same I have an electric coil top single burner and it gets hot. Like I put it to 2 and it almost burns my eggs. so as soon as it starts heating throw your egg in if you wait until it's fully preheated you're gonna burn the eggs.
I have this and just turn it on and off when I cook eggs sometimes.
but honestly, you can put it on high, throw the egg in and just move it around a bit. Works fine.

My thought was to get it up to heat, turn it off and then drop an egg in when it hits around 300, then let it cook for a minute until it starts to cool, turn it on again when it hits 200 and get it back up to 300. Then it should be good to flip, you can trim it back off, let it cool to 200 as it cooks, then turn it back on to get it to 300 and by that point it should be done and ready. Key is just to back off and turn it off when it gets too hot, turn it back on when the food has absorbed the heat during cooking. A little finicky obviously, but if this is all you have to cook on, you can definitely manage it

I got the larger version of this, by Dezin as well. It's more of a pot shape and came with a steaming basket and is stainless steel, instead of non-stick. The settngs are 200W and 600W. 600W is perfect for getting water going for noodles, then turn down to 200W once you add them. Plus the steaming basket is perfect for frozen vegetables for ramen (my main use scenario of the pot). The main reason I went with this one is it's very large size, 1.6L, it's perfect for two packs of ramen and an egg added to the water.

I got one a year ago and it is terrific for ramen, stews, soups, and especially hot pots for 2.
Imagine a square pan, elevated on 2-3inch legs. It has a clear lid. The controller plugs into the pan and is adjustable. Like starting really not much more then warm and goes up to 400-500 degrees.

I have this exact pot at work, love it. Only things I would change is more than two settings, maybe a potentiometer.
The “C” shape seen on the bottom of the pan may be from the heating element, with the “opening” being the ends of the positive and negative electric connections for it.
No shit the C shape is from the heating element lol what else would it be from...
It's AC, it doesn't have negative or positive electric connections.
For electric gadgets, do hope you are using a GFCI outlet or cord adapter. Some of the sketchy things you've showcased need those. I have an electric skillet that I've used for over a decade to fry meats and make things like Salisbury Steak and gravy, pancakes and sausage,etc..
Wouldn't trade it for 10 of those things.
I have a non stick Oster electric skillet, and I agree I would not trade it for 20 of these things if they where given too me for free.
I have an Oster stainless steel electric skillet, which is 30 yrs old and works like a champ. Would not trade it if you gave me something for free!
All here are correct. I have a Presto electric skillet that I got for $20, they are $35 now, but they are ceramic which is good. It can heat to any temp, is larger and more convenient than this pot. Also, I understand the lower end brands have more of that bad chemical that comes off the Teflon when heated. Glad to see Presto went to ceramic. I'm sure in a head to head here on the channel, the skillets would kill this pot any day of the week.
you can't make any soups with the Skillets. and cleaning all the splatters from using the skillets is terrible.

Same, you can put the cookware in dishwasher and one wipe will clean it... And it would use the same power...
imo induction plates are terrible, not only are they extremely loud, they are not AT ALL even in temperature. They just have two states, off or high power. The settings from 1 to 20 that you may have are just controlling how often it turns off. That casuses a lot of food to burn or water to boil over.
My daughter loves ours. She uses it for 2 am ramen or other soups. It works really well.
It is perfect, it has helped me make rice and different foods, it is a matter of trying and reading the instructions, is perfect for use with a solar power station

I’m a truck driver, and got one of these to heat up soup. Also have the steamer basket. It actually does pretty good as a steamer.

Hense the poached egg insert...I use it all the time...OR I use the pot to boil water and place another nonstick fry pan on top and cook my fried eggs....great for camping with a solar battery generator for sure! It is hard to find a low watt cooking stove for camping and/or emergencies....this pot works great if you get creative, lol You can not beat the 250-300 watt cooker for the price really! Similar cookers are 1000 watts. Thanks for the detailed video!

For eggs, try preheating it up to the highest setting then turn it off add the egg and cook only with the residual heat while unit is off. If it’s still too hot, preheat with the lowest setting, then turn it off and try. Just a thought.
I drive truck and just bought one to cook in. I mainly cook soups and noodles. But I also made sausage and scrambled eggs and it did a good job on that.I do like the fact that it doesn't get very hot on the outside so I can just eat out of it.
It's so hot because it was designed for one specific Asian dish called "hot pot".
It's a boiling hot broth that the family dips various things into including thinly sliced raw steak, it has to be lava hot to cook it and other raw ingredients enough.

I'm a mix it all together kind of cook; worked great for me. The non sick surface finally wore out after what I put it through. Really like it but it's not for everyone.

I feel like you could have done eggs with a little oil and preheating rather than starting it from cold. Admittedly frying in oil is not how you normally do eggs in a nonstick pan but I think for this particular option it might have worked.

Always sear the fat cap of your steak first as it renders some of it out and lets you cook the meat in the steak's fat. Sometimes you don't even need to add oil if the fat renders well enough. Also makes the fat cap nice and crisp which is more tasty.

Could you set it to the low temp but turn it off before it gets to full temp? Sometimes on a stovetop, I turn off the electric burner, which still has heat, and the cast iron skillet still has enough heat to cook eggs eggs at a lower temperature. Yes a bit more hands-on if you have to turn it on and off to maintain temperature..
In 1978 bought a 1000 watt hotplate for my dorm room, could boil water, pop popcorn or cook anything with it. Since it was American made 😮, still working perfectly 45 years later.
I have a really old set of pans that work like these do, the stay in the camp and I love them
