I remember switching batteries and GSM cards between phones when batteries would run low or the screen racked . Forget about making repairs, you don't even get to do this anymore. No - there is a youtube video for that.
We do not need to know how to repair phone, but it shouldn't be ridiculously hard or expensive to get one's phone repaired, or get to parts for it. Getting it repaired or physically upgraded(like batteries) is better for the environment compared to what we have now.
All ppl who blame phone company thinking they make the phone like that so they can break is like saying car company made windshield so they can break lmao. I've been using smartphone for 20 years, I've only drop and broke screen once, i just dont understand how people can be this clumsy but then again people crash their cars easily too so it make sense.
I really liked the fact that we could swap batteries back in the day. But now the manufacturer are making them planned obsolete products. It's very wasteful.
Yes! Apple makes it hard by design to repair the iPhone and in order to force the consumer a buy the new model. This consumer addition for new model, has been the Apple core business model for years. In order to break this break this cycle, 1- people must realized that the new models of iPhone are bringing little value added; 2- people must hold on to their iPhone longer; 3- people must make an effort to have their iPhone repaired.
I don't feel any emotion after dropping my phone, because I often buy second hand iPhone instead of new ones. WHY? It is because the electronics updating very soon, and it not worthy to spend 5000-6000RMB to buy a new one ,then the price dropped quick after the new ones come out next year.
If this could eliminate some of the massive amounts of e-waste produced every year, it seems like a very good idea. Back in the day, most electrical, electronic and mechanical devices could be repaired, but not so much today.
Until producers make them repairable it is not feasible. Everything is sealed nowadays and often not serviceable. Another example is flat screen TV's which are thrown into landfill once the screen is damaged.
Apple is the reason why this has become standard in the phone industry! How did we as consumers let this happen!! A phone where it’s very difficult to change the battery yourself or a screen that is smashed easily would have been frowned upon in the early 2000s. How did it get to this!
It must be some neurological disfunction, from all of us 6 only one son that is delayed has ever dropped phone in our entire lifes. Just like that straight from his hand like people in this video clip describe, but couple of times a week. I'm an engineer and walk with it in open external pocket- pouch and all sorts of welding grinding going up ladders jumping from rooftops, laying on the floor on top of it (I'm carefull when do it) daily happenes to it and never even one time I dropped it or smash. The screen has no protector and not even one scratch on the glass, multiple on plastic/ aluminium body, been like this for decades and only 3-4 phone changes from getting too slow and obsolete
You wouldn't need an apprenticeship, lots of patience, or any real training to replace those parts... IF manufacturers and brands didn't make it specifically hard to repair the phones just to force people to either buy a new device or have to go through their authorized repair programs which mostly do not fix anything, they just directly tell you for a vast majority of cases that it's "unfixable", and that you need to pay for a new one if you want your phone back, even if it's actually plenty fixable with anyone with a little training and the right parts. This is more than proven by brands that actually make phones that are fixable, like Fairphone. Well, it's proof enough how older smartphones were just easier to fix some 10 years ago or so. Smartphone companies purposefully killed the development and mass production of replaceable batteries so you are left with no option but to get these devices that are glued up together carrying batteries that are glued to the chassis of the phone just so it'd hard to replace them. Not only that, both Apple and Samsung, the biggest smartphone brands for western nations, are continuing to implement a myriad of policies, components and designs that makes it harder for phones to be fixed, on purpose. Their bullshit claims of environmentalism falls flat to anyone who understands what they are doing. Apple has already moved towards locking hardware components via firmware... you can't replace broken components anymore because there is an authentication process between parts that if they don't match, even if components are from the exact same model, they simply will refuse to work together. Samsung on the other side is applying for country wide bans of specific components such as smartphone screens based on bullshit claims of copyright ownership. They mean to stifle independent repair as a whole by stopping the free trade of component parts. What we need is government action to stop these predatory actions, crushing up eWaste to recover rare minerals is the worst possible way to make use of old devices - it's more costly than mining new minerals, it's damaging for the environment because it requires toxic chemicals to do so, and it's mostly something done for show alone - there have been multiple reports that eWaste is majorly exported to poor countries with no regulations or environmental protection, where this waste ends up in poor regions of the country where people will use these chemicals to extract rare minerals at huge costs on their health and their environments. So there you go. If you are interested in this industry, don't trust me, do your own research. I didn't even touch the surface on the bad practices of smartphone makers.
It's not about that we all need to learn how to repair smartphones. It's the FREEDOM to do it whether you like it or not. Not all people has the technical ability to repair such gadgets, but some people who can must have the FREEDOM to do so. BBC again missed the point.

I must say, though, that the battery I got for the 2nd phone lasts ~3 weeks without a charge! ..too bad the camera no longer works.
I have replaced the battery more than once and it helps
Great!... Except I've tried many of these places to try and get an apprenticeship but been completely ghosted every time... I just wanna help fix things!

Romans 6.23
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
John 3:16-21
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
Mark 1.15
15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.
2 Peter 3:9
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
Hebrews 11:6
6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Why stop with cell phones , why not lap tops iPad and apple watches . Also with the option too add after market parts , more memory , better faster prossers and longer battery life ? Sensors that will pickup the wi-fi a block away as to cut down on your cellphone bill.

@@drakehonest2 Feeling kinda "Shitty"
Thank you, BBC. Repairing mobile phones I cannot tell which part of the world where I will not be able to be a phone repairman after training.

Not if apple has anything to do with it!
Hello how are you doing…?
Inflation to the moon will learn us repair thing's.
All the years of R&D and they still cannot solve how to make a phone drop proof. I guess that would go against planned obselence though
IKR? Lighbulbs too. At this point, a light bulb should last forever.
Scrap the things
I remember switching batteries and GSM cards between phones when batteries would run low or the screen racked .
Forget about making repairs, you don't even get to do this anymore.
No - there is a youtube video for that.
We do not need to know how to repair phone, but it shouldn't be ridiculously hard or expensive to get one's phone repaired, or get to parts for it.
Getting it repaired or physically upgraded(like batteries) is better for the environment compared to what we have now.
Bad trade to get into with Apple and Samsung trying to lock down their devices and remove access to replacement parts.
Entirely the manufacturer's fault. They make these things difficult to repair by design.
It'd be better if we learned how to destroy them and live in this present. But that makes too much sense.
I really liked the fact that we could swap batteries back in the day. But now the manufacturer are making them planned obsolete products. It's very wasteful.
Wrong. The most common and cheapest fix is simply being forced into buying a brand new phone.
Everyone should watch Louis Rossmann.
I don't feel any emotion after dropping my phone, because I often buy second hand iPhone instead of new ones. WHY?
It is because the electronics updating very soon, and it not worthy to spend 5000-6000RMB to buy a new one ,then the price dropped quick after the new ones come out next year.
They have really bad reviews on google 😔
0:29 eek he needs help
See Fairphone can do it, so all of the other phone manufacturers are choosing not to make their phones easily repairable.
Hey how are you doing…?
If this could eliminate some of the massive amounts of e-waste produced every year, it seems like a very good idea. Back in the day, most electrical, electronic and mechanical devices could be repaired, but not so much today.
Until producers make them repairable it is not feasible. Everything is sealed nowadays and often not serviceable. Another example is flat screen TV's which are thrown into landfill once the screen is damaged.
Phone makers don't want you to 'service' their phone... They want you to buy NEW phones....
😮
Apple is the reason why this has become standard in the phone industry! How did we as consumers let this happen!! A phone where it’s very difficult to change the battery yourself or a screen that is smashed easily would have been frowned upon in the early 2000s. How did it get to this!
Why can't people just look after their stuff?
Takes 150 to repair each phone? No wonder people don't work for someone else and get paid hourly rate when you can make 120 an hour self employed.
Yes.
The manufacturers are actively trying to prevent it by design and disincentives.
Tried to fix an iPhone biggest regret of my life.
Now I bin my phone's once it's broken
Does anyone in the uk know.of anyone Good but cheap mobile phone repair courses please. Thankyou in advance.
I repair PC's. It's getting repair parts that's the problem. After five years parts get harder to find.
Get rid of your smart phone government surveillance device!
Dropping wouldn't be a problem if more companies made drop-proof phones. Durable phones should be the NORM!
I'd rather take it to a repair shop then do it myself
Imagine all that money's worth of data that's worth nothing in reality
Send them to a Chinese sweat shop. 5 dollars to repair. 😂
??
Phones should be as repairable and interchangeable as the old Nokia brick phone.
Easy to fix if designed good make them in Japan again best quality ever
Go UK!
It's not hard to learn especially when Ifix can make it pretty easy to fix it.
This is why I use a tablet instead. Bigger screen and I can still carry my sim card over or micro SD for extra work storage.
informative topic.
How filthy rich are you over there in London to intentionally drop and damage a pocket computer?
