Great video. Wish you had spoken more on the reason behind retarding the exhaust cams by 2 teeth. Do you have more information on why?
I believe it has to do with disabling the active exhaust cams.
Hello I have an ej20x in my 2011 wrx. What he's saying is that the regular ej25 timing assembly for my car should match up besides you needing a different water pump, correct?
Yes unless you keep the oil warmer. I recommend you put an oil cooler in place where the oil warmer to keep the oil happy.
This threw a code p354 im still learning about this engine someone might have swapped usa cams im going to put it back to stock and will see .
i just bought a ej20 wrx sti swap and codes p0014 and p0024 popped up
Do the EJ20X have timing belt guide/retainer on the cams? Manual car have the retainer but auto cars do not. Assuming not as the 20x are from automatics.

Love the vids man! I’m swapping a EJ20x into a 2009 wrx..already swapped intake manifold exhaust/turbo but I haven’t retarded the timing .would I need to do that or could I just leave it how it is?.. also would I need a tune for the EJ20x.. or could I run the car without a tune
You can leave it as is, you need a tune. With retarding the exhaust cams you get more low end so I recommend it, kinda helps the free floating cam issue since leaving the exhaust AVCS unplugged
@@FOFRacing do you know of a good tuners in CT, I brought my 2.5 to efi but they are turning down the 20x.
@@silverlgt9038 personally I go through Tuning Alliance now. He did well with my car and I’m quite happy

Driver side cam gear slipped during install. What kind of tool do I need to move it back into place?
Take off the little cover plate, 3 8MM bolts. Then you can use a Allen key socket and a ratchet to spin the gear in okace

One question I have.. is this to make it run better on 91 octane? I did the 20x swap and it pre detonates a lot due to the octane being too low
You need a tune that accounts for the lower octane.
This is being done to account for the active exhaust cams not being used.

Your regular USDM ecu will be just fine
Ok cool ive got a 2003 impreza 2.5 n/a currently turbocharging it but I understand that engine wont last so im thinking of putting the ej20x in my car anything els i should know before the swap
That can not work without you swapping the entire car harness and ecu to a turbo ecu and harness

Either or as long as they’re both the same, then you tell your tuner how many you did.
I’ve always done 2 teeth back

I just did this swap and i got a p0018 cel light Wondering if that’s because I didn’t retard the cam gears like your showing i left it all oem without plugging in those bottom acvs sensors
You still need a tune for the 20X, if you haven’t I’d replace the AVCS solenoids
Will AVCs solenoids will cause p0011 & p0021? Using ej20x solenoids
@@bryantchavez8440 i swapped mine from my ej255 and put them in my ej20x and retimed my timing belt tdc and my p00xx codes went away 👍
