  • 2nd time ridge soaring. 1st time with more than one person assisting on a wire launch. The guy on the nose (forgot his name) was very experienced and I really appreciated him being there.
Launch was good, turn into ridge lift was good, and I definitely got slightly above ridge while heading SW. The turn away from the ridge and to the NE probably should have been more aggressive.
Looking at the footage, I am kicking myself for not leaving the ridge for the LZ at least 30-40 seconds before I did. I got too low and... I'm chalking this dumba**ery up to inexperience and stupidity. I'll be more cautious in the future.
Moving on, this flight was about 1.5 hours after my 1st ridge soar and the sun was getting lower in the sky, so the air was a lot less thermally and no chance of getting up by turning in thermals, so it was a meandering flight to the LZ, which had also calmed down significantly, so I went for and got a solid, safe foot landing instead of worrying about a spot landing (though I was still in the same zip code as the target). I'm happy with that landing.
And, honestly, ignoring having gotten too low in ridge, I'm happy with the rest of the flight--and will definitely learn from that mistake.

Nice flight, a word of advice. Man don't scratch so close to the ridge. I was blown into the radio tower north of launch in conditions like that. Just a small gust picked up my left wing and bam I hit the base of the tower. Pilots at launch could here me screaming as I made impact. At the time there was a cable that went around the base of the tower, as I fell my control bar hooked the cable and prevented me and the glider falling down the rock face. That was almost 30 years ago , and I remember it like it was yesterday.

@@KeithMilton-rl1mg Yeah, I definitely got too close on this flight. I wasn’t sure when I was flying, but after looking at the footage later, I should have gone to the LZ at least 15 seconds earlier.
