    Yes, the Skywatcher mounts and the Orion mounts ARE the same mounts. The same mounts are also available under the name of Saxon. They are made by Synta. The difference is the paint colour and the brand label. The slightly earlier model of the Skywatcher was black like the Orion models but had lower quality bearings and a different Hand Control interface socket. When Skywatcher released the Pro version they painted it white and upgraded the bearings, and for the following year the standard black model was still available. Synta is the same company that makes all the ED80 Telescopes we are familiar with, painted different colours and labelled Skywatcher, Orion, and Saxon.

    Skywatcher, Orion and Celestron mounts are all made by Synta company. However, they are not exactly the same, but are extremely similar. Differences are mostly driven by requirements from respective "brands".
    In any case, it is nice to have a video with such line-up, especially for many people who are moving up in astrophotography.
    Based on the level of commitment to astrophotography (emotional, time-wise and finance-wise) - there are three mounts on three levels (broadly) on the market:
    1. Start: Celestron AVX - first "real" mount for many many astrophotographers.
    2. Improve/develop: Skywatcher EQ6R-Pro - proven mount with now years on the market, better than any on the list (from some significantly, from some marginally).
    3. Close the loop: 10Micron GM1000HPS - first and last among premium mounts which closes the loop. From this one - the only way is "up" in terms of payload, price, remote observ/photo... and accuracy (Planewave, ASA etc...).
    I've participated in many many discussions, back & forth's, analyses, informed and uninformed conversations - and met many people (owners) and talked to vendors who maintain and repair and improve mounts. After enough time in seemingly endless discussions - conclusion was always as stated above. Those who own Astro-Physics will argue, those with Software Bisque will argue, those with iOptrons will argue etc etc. Anyway, I moved from AVX to EQ6R-Pro and one day, if I'm not bored by then or whatever with astrophotography, I may find I'm committed enough to justify 13,000 USD for 10Micron.

      One more thing - I agree on portability, but w/o absolute encoders or a dome - lighter mounts will be susceptible to issues due to the wind. One of the reasons I gave up on iOptron CEM40 (and CEM60 for that matter) and stuck with EQ6R-Pro.

      Hi there, thanks a lot for your detailed analyses, and thanks for the info on the CEM40. I tend to agree with your thoughts. Beginner mounts world be AVX/HEQ5 and intermediate mounts will then be either cgem2, Eq6r-pro, atlas2, mainly because of the upgrade to heavier telescopes. Cheers and clear skies.

      Thanks for all your research on this subject. I was planning on buying the atlas 2 for a 115 triplet. Do you think this would be a good set up? Is the eq6r pro have any differences you can identify? Thanks in advance.

    • @strelnikoff7
      @strelnikoff7 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Alohachett Until AstroForum answers, my 2 cents would be - on paper the Orion Atlas II EQ-G and SkyWatcher EQ6R Pro - are the same mounts in different color and with different labels. In fact, the Atlas was upgraded to Atlas II to match the Skywatcher EQ6R Pro. They've aded belts to the drive system of the original Atlas and dual-saddle (Vixen and Losmandy). In theory, they should perform the same. In practice, SkyWatcher EQ6R Pro with belt drive has been on the market for a while now and there is a lot of information and experiences shared online. Parts are easier to come by (from manufacturer) - not so sure about the Orion. One thing no one knows if Orion just asked Synta to re-paint EQ6R Pro - but it seems like it :)
      I would check Cloudynights forum - there have been topics discussing this.
      One thing I'm not sure also is - if Orion Atlas II uses EQ MOD (then again, some people don't use this at all). Same load capacity so you should be fine with Atlas II.
      Why not SkyWatcher EQ6R Pro anyway?

    Thanks for another video... I have the NEQ6 Pro (Atlas Pro), as indicated by others are twin sisters with same genetics just wearing different dresses.
    The improved altitude adjuster on the EQ6-R/Atlas II and the handle are probably the two external significant upgrades ergonomically. The internal belt drive and slight added capacity are of less overall importance for those who have to transport and setup their mounts.
    The advantage of a belt drive is two-fold, quieter slews(no real difference just running at sidereal) and no backlash issues with gears. This second part advantage is seen when guiding and when PPEC is engaged. The mount changing directions (moving faster or stalling(moving slower) under a belt drive improves the rate of change without inducing the lag that backlash normally causes when changing the rate/direction for guidng via programs like PHD2.
    For PPEC you train the drive to know the shape errors in the worm gear(that's where the main repeatable error occurs in a 3 minute cycle). With gears vs a belt there are more induced errors during corrections using gears so the PPEC can be much smoother with belts. Rowan belt modifcations for the NEQ6/EQ6 are good but due to belt sizing vs gear sizing some have seen minor issues after DIY installation. Having a competent mount service upgrade it may be best for those not mechanically inclined.
    The iOptron mount with iPolar is new and iPolar is supposed to be as good as a Polemaster, which is perhaps the most popular accessory for these mounts. While GPS is nice, everyong carries phones which have highly accurate locators and the extra few seconds to input the coordinates really is nothing in the scheme of hours of operation.
    BTW, I believe my NEQ6 is heavier than 16kg, I haven't weighed it yet but I think it's closer to 20kg, at least it always seems much heavier than 35lbs.

      Thanks for the detailed feedback, highly appreciated! I'm considering the Eq6r-pro as mentioned. I'm still on the fence though. Some state that we should take 60% of the max capacity as rule for accurate guiding... As I'm planning to have about 12kg on the mount, perhaps I should consider alternatives (most of them more expensive...). Thanks again and clear skies!

    Hi. Very excellent analysis. To me the Skywatcher eq 6 r is the way to go for you. I am in the US so I’ve had the Orion ATlas clone . I can tell you it’s very reliable. (Yes you are correct they are exactly the same functionally speaking, disregarding the colors. ).
    After you master the mount, you can always purchase the pole master and then it do extreme PA. Then you have comparable to the ioptron.
    But recently, I’ve added the EQMOD usb direct cable, and did away with the hand controller, and I’ve purchased the ZWO ASIAIR device for total wireless control of both mount & cameras. Plus, you can do precise polar alignment using the ASIAIR that performs plate solving very efficiently.
    Good luck.

    Some comments. Orion and Skywatcher, and some Celestron mounts are all made by Synta. The Skywatcher and Orion mounts are cousins.
    Both of those mounts can also be run from EQMod, the Celestron can not.
    The ioptron iPolar is similar to the Polemaster device and also the SharpCap part alignment routine. Honestly, if you're going to have a guide camera, use SharpCap and use the guide scope for polar alignment.
    The CEM40 also, at more cost, comes in the CEM40EC version, which has enhanced encoders or better tracking, but it costs more.
    The recommendation that I've always been told is for astrophotography, no more than 60% of the rated capacity of the mount for payload. So, with any of these, you're going to be limited to 20-22 pounds of payload.
    It's more money, but I would look at the ioptron CEM60 with the TriPier mount.
    About $2,700 USD, but if you wanted to put something like a 10" or 12" R.C. on it, the Carbon Fiber truss types are weighing in at. 34 and 44 pounds respectively.
    Even the 8" Carbon Fiber tube version is 17 pounds, and that's before you start adding cameras, guide scopes, guiding cameras, filter wheels, etc. Very easy to push right up against that limit of 60% of 42 pounds.
    At astroshop.Eu, you can get the iOptron CEM60 for 2190Euro, without the tripod (just the head) and the TriPier for 690 Euro. You could lap get the iPolar for 289Euro.
    Sure, it's more expensive, but it will last a long time, offers great reviews by users, and supports your future growth.
    Explore Scientific offers a 152mm Achromat for under 800 Euro, but it's a beast at close to 30 pounds (web site says 11 kg.) You still are going to need a good mount if you want to put that on there (with a Baader Semi-APO filter) and shoot with it.
    From the stuff you've mentioned, I would go with the CEM 40, but the Skywatcher EQ6R Pro would be my next choice. I too have a Celestron AVX, and I'll never buy another Celestron mount again.
    Want wireless? I would suggest the Losmandy G-11 with the PMC-8 wireless control system, but it's 4,000 Euro.
    You Could get the Explore Scientific EXOS-2 mount with the PMC-8, and that's only 700 Euro, but is only rated for 28 pounds.
    Do look for the PMC-8 videos here on TH-cam though to see the loading demo they did to it, sixty or seventy pounds worth of weights on it. Pretty Amazing.

      Thanks a lot for the detailed info. I'm thinking about the Eq6r-pro (as said in the video) with a TS Richey Cretien 8 inch (about 9kg) to capture smaller DSO's (galaxies, globular clusters). With guiding and camera would be at about 12kg I think. But you're probably right that the more expensive options provide more accurate guiding... Do you have any experience using a RC? Thanks again, clear skies.

    For me the tracking accuracy and polar alignment requirements could be relaxed. They can both be replaced with with an additional tracking scope and free (or inexpensive) software. What I think matters more is both RA and Dec motor control so that software can have full control of positioning and capturing. I would expect that from an advanced mount.

    I have the CEM 40. The determining factor for me was the weight of the mount. My only reservation was the minimum operating temperature of -10 which is no longer a concern because when it actually gets that cold, I'd rather be inside anyway. Tracks beautifully. The only thing I don't like about it are the knobs on the saddle. They are cheap and I find the USB and power on the deck to be pretty much useless. I'll probably take it out to make more room for cables running down the center which is great. Cable management is superb.

    I'm back to add a little to the thread. I've had lots of time to test the Meade LX-85 and thought I'd drop my experience here. Regarding the ASCOM drivers esp. Right now I'm running Stellarium thru a third party RS232 to USB and the "Direct serial port connection" option in the software. For PHD2 I have a QHY-5 2 mono and I have to use "On camera" in PHD2. The old school method of direct connection via the QHY and the guide port on the mount. There are two heavily discussed ASCOM drivers for use with this mount. One is the "Meade universal" and the other is the "Meade Generic." Before I continue I must add that Ihave purchased third party wires and also the Meade #505 connector set. The first problem I encountered was the COM port not being recognized. The Meade USB to COM has a driver available that creates a virtual COM port. That failed. I am able to connect the mount to PHD2 in this way but it throws up a "Guide pulse error" when you try to manually guide in the menu. I have tested the wires and I'm convinced that there are no full working ASCOM drivers for the LX-85. Included my work-around to help others. As far as tracking goes I had consistent RMS error of 1.2 off of a very lazy polar alignment. The gearing is such that it will track very accurately over long periods of time. What I was concerned with was consistency. It passes. Ispoke with Katorella Astro and he assures me that his mount is connected thru ASCOM and not thru the guide port of the mount. He is using the "Meade Generic" ASCOM driver. This could all be a WIN 10 error and beyond my understanding. This is my experience after many long hours of research. I basically gave up and for everyone out there: I have a degree in Info Systems Tech. This mount gave me a lot of trouble. I still love it but it's sad to have to use third party wires to accomplish minute tasks. Would I recommend it? Yes and no. If you plan to automate STAY AWAY. If you want a solid mount that's light, and you can accept on camera guiding, grab one. It is possible that a future ASCOM driver will be developed. To me personally, we are in 2020.....all mounts should be USB. Furthermore ASCOM is important enough that the companies providing mounts should be supplying drivers. I hope this reaches anyone it may help. Clear skies.

    Whenever mechanical accuracy is required, heavy is better. You want it heavy but to come apart for transport. Also, due to the arrangement of the legs, the Skywatcher Pro wins out for anyone observing near the equator. The counter weight easily clears the legs. Thanks again for sharing your experience as an astrophotographer. I am still 50/50 between Eq6 R Pro or iOptron GEM 45, which have the same load capacity as Eq6 R Pro.
    The appearance of the GEM 45 has spoiled my choice. Because to photograph in the city of Faro in Portugal (where I live), I have to climb 4 floors without an elevator.
    I think you will choose Eq6 R Pro as your new purchase.

    I’ve been into astro for about 8 months now. I have the ioptron skyguider. It’s been great, but when I’m using it with a 350mm scope and doing 60sec+ subs, I have to throw away about 1 out of every 5 images due to tracking errors. I don’t use a guide scope. This is just the guider walking back and forth and not a polar alignment issue. My question is, if I upgrade to an eq mount like these, will i be able to have more “keepers” without a guide scope? I prefer to not over complicate it by needing a pc or the “air” unit to connect via WiFi and set up guiding. If I can just get a better mount I’d be fine with no guiding and still have a few subs tossed.

About video quality, In the opening and closing segments, maybe use a lavalier mic so the sound is the same as when you are at the computer. Then, the music is much louder, so at several points, the viewer is having to adjust the volume. Some of us watch when family is sleeping, so this is a problem. @@AstroForumSpace I'm intrigued by your channel because we use the same basic setup with but little variation. Same 80mm f6 type of apo, you a TP, me a Meade, zwo178, mine is mono, you use an AVX, me a cgem, we seemed to have reached the same decisions from half a world apart. I think astronomy really can be a common language! Big thumbs up on getting the lavalier and the usb mics! (Prepare for more advice...) Try to keep the volume levels in the same range and treble controls the same brightness. You get a lot more reflected sound in front of that blue/black wall than in your room/office area, so keep that in mind. You never want volume level to go above 0 db. Most people use -3 db as their maximum level to hit when talking. That leaves a little head room to keep out distortions from things like a sharp laugh, sliding chairs, door closings, dropped or snapping things etc... Sometimes, in an uncontrolled environment, like a commercial kitchen or construction area, your max levels could be -9 or even -12 db loudest ambient and the mic very close to the mouth to try to dampen all the extra noise. Talk across the mic, not in to it to avoid popping P's and mushiness. You'd then have to adjust your final level in the edit to match the "studio" levels. But you shouldn't have to worry about that. With the lavalier, be sure it is centered so you can turn your head either direction easily without too much drop-off and make sure it isn't dampened by a thick collar and that no part of the clothes is rubbing against it and that the area where it is clipped is not likely to be rubbing against skin or other cloth as you speak or move your arms. There, now it is up to you! : ) Good luck and eagerly awaiting your next vid!

    Firstly thank you, very interesting to see someone else's priorities in real time. Things to add:
    1. The iOptron is the only one with a fully mechanically balanced polar axis - I'd be confident this is better accuracy and repeatability, (perhaps also an element of the higher price), at this price point €400 is an investment.

I've got CEM40 and routed USB3 cable through mount centre into camera USB hub completely bypassing it's USB 2 ports. • @AstroForumSpace
      @AstroForumSpace  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there, if I'm correct, the NEQ6 Pro mount is the predecessor of the EQ6R Pro. The main difference is that the EQ6R Pro has a belt drive which (somewhat) increases the guiding accuracy of the mount. Also, it can handle about 2 kg's of extra payload (at least according to the specs of the supplier) and it has a handle on the mount head to carry that heavy mount around. Also, the EQ6R- Pro has a USB output on the mount itself so you can control the mount from your PC with (free) EQMOD software without needing the extra controller.

      Lots of folks start out with a reflector. The are relatively cheap, have a large aperture and the F/5 ratio is excellent for deep-sky imaging. Take into account that reflectors are a bit bulky and heavy, so you'll need a decent mount that is ably to support the telescope. And this reflector will probably suffer from coma, so you'll probably need a coma corrector for deep-sky imaging.

    • @AstroForumSpace

      tracking is always difficult to measure, I base the figures in the video on what users have been reporting in other reviews. Tracking accuracy depends on....weather conditions, weight and balance of your payload (telescope, camera, guidescope), how well you have polar aligned your mount, differences in focal length....I'll stop here, you get the picture. But in general, it's good to take your weight of your payload as an indicator for the kind of mount you are going to need. Clear skies.

    Hi Wido, I have a 9.25inch SCT and a ZWOASI178 camera with AVX mount.. I love it.. but I have a dilemma as far as Deep Sky observing because of payload capacity. I came from a visual background but now have AP bug.. do I get a better mount, a smaller SCT like an 8inch or maybe a good refractor... saying that I have a AZ100 Inspire Celestron refractor...which I can put on the AVX mount.. not sure if it is up to the job though as there is quite a bit of movement in the rack and pin focuser..
    If I got a deepsky camera the I would go for a mono type. It would be nice to capture nebula such as the horsehead, and veil nebula.

      Hi Robbie, there's a whole lot to discuss :-). You can find my gear on my website: astroforumspace.com/my-astrophotography-gear/. The C11 is supernice, but will suffer from coma for which you'll need a coma corrector. Also, with that focal length, you'd need at least an intermediate mount like the cgem2, the eq6r Pro, or similar. If you want to use the avx, a good wider field refractor telescope up to max. 500mm is nice. Be sure to get an ED or APO refractor. I've used my TS 80/480mm f/6 photoline refractor for years and was very happy with the results. If you want to go mono, you'd also need a filter wheel and a cooled camera, I've been using the asi1600mm pro + filterwheel. Good comparison that shows you get what you pay for. I have a quite old EQ6 Pro. I didn't fancy paying out 1600 euro for the EQ6 R, so I upgraded my mount with the EQ6 belt modification, after hearing great results from it. So it is always another option, rather than buying a new mount.

    I think, on principle, you have to ding Orion for its "No parts or support for non-original owners." I've owned lots of Orion equipment, but that policy is a BAD policy. They should feel a groundswell of backlash; maybe they'll do right. In the meantime, I avoid them and look for a SkyWatcher clone (like my recently purchased used AZ-EQ5).

  • @dr8964
    @dr8964 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I just bought the CGEMII and I'm struggling, but I think this is a normal part of the process with astro anything (not necessarily photography). BTW this mount is heavy. I have to totally dismantle it to move it (ok, i'm not so strong). I can move the tripod and mount if I remove OTA and counterweights, but it's still heavy. Doesn't help that I have three broken fingers at the minute, but still -- I probably should have thought this through a bit better. I went through 2-star align, and who knew, Capella was underground LOL. :) Weather has been crap so that's not helping.

    • @AstroForumSpace
      @AstroForumSpace  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Danette, I'm sorry to hear you're struggling, but rest assured, everyone does so in the beginning. The cgemII is one of the heavier mid-range mounts. If I remember correctly, you can click on "back" when a star is not visible in your sky, the controller will automatically suggest another one. You can also use an APP like stellarium to see what stars are in the night sky.

    the atlas and Eq-6 range are the same mount, Orion is just an american distrubutor that rebadges equipement, the atlas and the sirius rage (which corresponds to the HEQ-5) are all equipped with the synscan software and needs to be updated and controlled with skywatcher drivers.
    /Edited/ I love the CEM40, but it's deceivingly small phisycally, and it doesn't play well at all with scoped that require a side mounted camera such as newtonian, since the normal way of mounting teh camera would have it crash into the mount itself, so you have to use the camera by rotating the scope and that moves the center of gravity way up
