The amount of Sanskrit words in Zoroastrianism is fascinating. Words like gatha 13:20 which literally mean "saga" in Sanskrit and Marathi make me wonder if Persians were heavily influenced by Indus valley civilization and Hindus in general

Zoroastrianism isn’t about beliefs but inner reflections and transformation. And Zurvan can be described as an Infinite Void from which all things come and into which all things return. Ahura Mazda being the creator aspect of the divine and Angra Mainyu (Ahriman) being the destroyer aspect of the divine. These are principles

This discusses Zurvan. It’s sad that you didn’t go into detail because it’s quite crucial to Zoroastrianism

Let me tell you all a very famous story about Zoroastrians in India: so when Muslims invaded Iran zoroastrian refugees came to India went to the King's court of that region asked the king to give them shelter the king showed them a glass full of milk and told them that this land is already full ,how would they live here then one of the refugees took out some sugar and mixed it into the milk and told the king that just like the sugar dissolves in milk we will also dissolve in this country and would live peacefully here.

The fact deva means god in ancient lativina, German and other European language make me think why did Persian made deva as bad guy? Something to do with ancient history I guess.
Also in vedic texts devas are not completely good and asura are not completely bad they are people of 2 sides fighting for throne right now deva won and are at throne. Yes deva are kinda portrayed as good in our texts.
But they belong to same family at times deva and asura have even helped each other.

I’m from Afghanistan and come from a traditionally muslim culture.
As kids, we’ve been told that Zoroastrianism was our pre-Islamic religion and it’s a heresy religion because they worship fire instead of God.
We also have a dance called the attan in which we perform certain movements while moving in a continuous circle one behind another. I know now that the dance dates back to Zoroastrian times and back than, they use to dance around a burning fire. The fire aspect vanished with time and only the circling motion continued in our memories. Zoroastrianism is a very sophisticated and grandiose religion worthy of my deepest respect. It sound a lot like the three Abrahamic religions; specially Christianity.

She said when the two cultures met and the Persian's kept referring to the Hindu gods as Daevas or "devils and false gods" the Hindus were like, "uhhh yeah I guess you can call them Daevas" so they eventually came to refer to their gods as Daevas, and the Hindus referred to the Persian false gods as Ahuras so the words came to represent all the demons and false gods in Hinduism. Most likely the case zarathustra people have replaced devas and asuras in opposite way. Because in hindu mythology indra dev (God of thunder) is devtha very smilar to Greek God Zeus and God Thor both share similar story of having hammer and killing demon.
Also indra deva is king of other devthas (the sun god, the moon etc etc)
Above all these God there are 3 main(Bramha, Vishnu, shiva)
Among all 3, shiva is called as "Mahadev" the gods of all gods who is similar to that of Allah in Islam God who is formless and has no end. But Hindus believe shiva has shape and is also shapeless, since humans need shape to worship we have a form of shiva in form of ligam which means symbol in Sanskrit

@Finn Spooner not all Christianity started off like that, Gnosticism believed the Jewish God, although being the being that brought our world and life into existence, is actually a lesser, corrupt entity that is under the one true God but not aware of its existence. Jesus was meant to be an agent of the true God, sent to open mankind's eyes to his nature. These ideas were denounced and suppressed by the early church, but makes for an interesting read.

AGAIN.....all prophets came with the same "message" and all of them recieved that particular message from the same angels so it's the same system to begin with. the difference is all of them got corrupted "somehow" and this is the main reason a revelation after revelation had to appear to correct the path till the last one when God finally made HIS own clarification that there's no more revelations to be sent and that that particular final book "Quran" will be reserved for mankind to never say "we didn't know about that"

Books can be "imitated" you know and some might take from that "first" book to add to his own book to make it look more divine or sacred :D again I'm not claiming that it's not likely to be true to happen with Zaradish again it's all about same God and same angels with some corruption of course and thus no authentication until Quran and islam was completed and revealed but dates matter for registration to act as a proof and islam did it first

Modern pagans are practioners of interpretetions/re-creations of ancient belief systems that did not usually have “official” names when they “may” have been practiced. You must know that many modern practioners are proud to use the term pagan. Where I am from the word PAGAN is in the chosen name of some of the religious orders such as the Celtic Pagan Fellowship and Pagan Brotherhood of Odin to name just 2.. Stop the false victim act and be civilized! BTW the term pagan is a beloved term to thousands with origins meaning folk/country type beliefs (word pagny has similar PIE origins). Can you name every ancient religion’s modern name, didn’t think so, neither can most, so choose not to be offended when no offence was intended.

The problem is that there's no evidence that Christianity was influenced by Zoroastrianism. Of cours archaeological evidence prove Zoroastrianism existed before 600 BC. But these archaeological evidences don't show what was this religion about.
The only written accounts about this religion is the Avista texts. But the Avista texts were written in the fourth century AD. That's 400 years after Christ and 300 years after the Bible was completed. Therefore most likely Zoroastrianism we know today was influenced by Christianity.

I just finished watching Cogito's videos on religion. They covered more content than a whole semester of a college-level course on comparative religious studies. Took a lot less than a semester too! Nice work. And to be perfectly honest... your descriptions of the similarities and differences of the Abrahamic faiths are pretty accurate. I'd make your videos required study if was still teaching.

Great video. Must have taken a real long time. One question: I notice you referred to Ahura Mazda and Angra Mainyu as "they." Is that because the Zoroastrians don't consider them to be explicitly male figures?

Yeah I attempted to do that. But slipped up a few times and said he. But many zoroastrians thinkers would argue that they are genderless beings.

There is no gender specifiction in most Iranic languages. There is no He and She in the Persian language for example. Which is why it is translated as "They" in English

@@rameen7646 That is correct, but if you pay attention to my comment you'd see that I said "most" Iranic languages. Avestan(the primary language of Zoroastrian texts) is an old Iranian language and it has no gender divisions.

I really like how informative this is, I have a friend from high school who follows Zoroastrianism, and I remember realizing he did because he has zoroastrian bird necklace!

In the induction class for Mazda Motors, there was a slide showing how Mazda as a brand got it's name from Zoroastrianism.
