    • @exodiathecoolone

      As someone who debates online frequently, what I think is happening with the Sorbo type people (as in people who think like him) is that they hear people like myself asking about the problem of evil, or perhaps they hear us saying that the Bible God is an evil bully and if he were real, I can't follow him.
      It might be that they're not getting what it is we mean. If I say stuff like the above, I don't mean that right this very minute, I really do believe Bible God exists and that I think he's an asshole.
      No...what I'm saying is that your religion, your holy book, tells us about this character called God or Yahweh or Jehovah or whatever, and according to what you guys say... *if* this guy were real, then I cannot morally justify following and worshipping him. Just like if Emperor Palpatine were real, I cannot morally justify following and worshipping him.
      Right this minute, I'm an atheist. That means I don't believe your god exists. I'm not secretly hating him.
      On the other hand...if he is real...then yeah...I would call him an asshole. If he is as your religion describes as, especially the Old Testament.
      But for me to believe that the Biblical God is real AND an asshole...well that requires me to believe he is real. At this moment, I believe his portrayal within the religion makes him out to be an asshole. Whether that has any relation to a real God is still kinda up in the air.

      One of the multiple personages that get addressed as "Satan" (Adversary) in the Bible is Zeus in the NT (narratively speaking, it's right after a previous Satan was defeated at the Cross so God and His people are ready to move on to fighting the next Satan), making Zeus a rival sky daddy instead of the Judeo-Christian Sky Daddy (who hates rivals), and the Bible overlaps with the Greco-Roman beliefs at times, so Greco-Roman stories such as Sorbo's Hercules were very popular with staunch Christians back then who saw the stories of Zeus and Poseidon as more compatible with their beliefs than that pesky weird Pokeyman with its religion of Evolutionism being taught by mouse demons, especially since Roman Catholicism had long adhered to Romanticism, keeping the Roman gods and stories alive as a cultural inheritance and using them allegorically to teach Christianity, sometimes culturally conflating the two in Western civilization.

      I thought the definition of "clinically dead" had changed to mean something far more irreversible with the concept of "brain death" since cardiac arrest can be reversed by CPR and defibrillators. Did he say he was clinically dead for minutes before anyone came to help? He could have been receiving CPR at that time, which would still help the brain receive blood, no? Hence why he isn't a vegetable.
      (Note: edited for clarity the remove errors)
      Addendum: to be sure, the changes in his beliefs and the neuronal surge are probably signs of brain damage though. This whole plot seems to be the product of brain damage.

      Cheshire Kat there are instances where people survived without oxygen for sometime. Usually with hypothermia or underwater. The best way to determine death is brain activity for that reason. When I had to determine a death on scene I had to check the pupils, even, dilated and fixed. One thing I learned about being a medic is that the body can be amazingly resistant

    Here's a scene that should've been in the film. After Sol asks Norm if there still friends, Norm should sigh and say "Sol, you have associated yourself with a type of people who consider people like me to be second class citizens at best and monsters to be exterminated at worst all for something I can't change. You should be asking if you still want to be friends with me." To which Sol would reply "Don't worry. I won't tell anyone you're British."

    I had a weird idea once for a "Yes Virginia" fic (Hercules fans will know what that is) where Zeus talks Kevin Sorbo into going to Heaven to convince Anthony Quinn into coming back to reprise his role one more time in the Percy Jackson movie. It turns out Quinn went to VIP Heaven and St. Peter tells Sorbo he can't go there because it's only for actors. Sorbo says "But I am an actor!" Peter says "I mean real actors. The kind who have been in films." Sorbo says "I was in Meet the Spartans!" Peter tells him "Oh. You're going to VIP Hell for that." Turns out VIP Hell isn't so bad. He meets Ed Wood and finds the only bad things about VIP Hell is the only water available is tap water and room service is slow, mainly because Torgo is the waiter. (But he has his theme music so you know when he's coming.)

      What if both are true?

There’s a really famous example of a man named Howard Storm who it happened too. • @EmpressOfCatsup
    @EmpressOfCatsup 6 ปีที่แล้ว +28

    This is what the "atheist" character pretty much always is in these movies. It's because even just giving an accurate representation of an atheist wouldn't serve the purpose of validating their audience's preconceived notions. The movies are just meant to make their particular brand of Christian feel good about themselves.
    I never believed in deities, and I just see it as a meaningless non-explanation. If I see you with a cake, I ask you where it came from, and you say that Bob made it, that implies there is a person (Bob) who I can ask about how to make the cake. If I ask how the universe came to be and you say that God did it, what good does that do me? Can I have a chat about physics with Yahweh? No. It's just useless to my understanding of the universe, so it's a meaningless non-explanation. And that doesn't even bring in the problem of my trying to understand what a non-physical entity is and how it can interact with physical reality.
    What's the chance that they ever put an ignostic atheist in one of their films?

    I AM an atheist but when bad things happen, you DO question the existence of God.. When you see people dying, you realise that if God existed, it could not have happened

    • @michaelhaydenbell
      @michaelhaydenbell 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That makes no sense. This is not a very well-thought out idea. A god (as in some kind of greater power) can exist, and have bad things happen; it's just that the typical Christian interpretation of God is stupid and full of holes. Maybe that's what you meant...if so, I guess my bad. In their world, nothing has to make any sense, cuz "God works in mysterious ways".

    Why Sorbo had the wife character die of cancer after he went back to Christianity? It makes God look like a troll.

  • @MegaChickenfish

    I've mentioned this story before but it's worth mentioning on how vivid hallucinations can be: I once woke up to a huge black dog staring down to me with sad eyes, completely pinning me down to the bed, only to blink and have it disappear and my limbs regain function. I was paranoid *for years* that something supernatural had happened to me...until I learned what Sleep Paralysis was.
    Or on another note, that Penn and Teller demonstrated we can reproduce near-death experiences dependably using a centrifuge, tracking exactly what's happening as the blood drains out of your brain and you pass out. It begs the question why we _ever_ considered listening to people who were suffering brain damage. It's like trusting the testimony of the crack addict that there are in fact demon spiders crawling under his skin.

    I guess when people tried to explain to Hercules why people don’t believe in god he decided to ignore them.
    1) He thinks evidence is as irrelevant to non believers as him
    2) He thinks “I don’t know” is as horrifying to non believers as it is to him.

    27:51 Well, Jake ACKTHUALLY it is "Connor and me" in this case and you can tell by taking the other person out of the sentence. So, here, you would say, "He uses me" and not, "He uses I". That's why it's "He uses Connor and me" despite that sounding slightly wrong on first hearing. JAKE.

    If any Christians are reading the comments here, I'd like to ask them a question. The scene where Sorbo goes to visit the con turned pastor...why does the pastor believe Sorbo's character when he says he saw his son?
    I understand that in a Christian mindset, your loved ones still do exist and it is possible to see them, and that a NDE isn't just a hallucination or the mind playing tricks on itself.
    How is it the pastor knows, when this guy comes up out of the blue (were the two characters familiar with each other beforehand?) saying he was in a car crash and he saw his dead son...that Sorbo's character *did* see his real dead son?
    As much as this movie portrays strawmen atheists, I have to say that here it really does a disservice to Christians. In this scene, it portrays you as gullible as all fuck.
