    Excellent choice on the gifts for the hosts. You always want to be generous and thoughtful to those who are making your trip trouble-free.

      Little did I know that giving a knife away is taboo. Luckily if they give you a gift back it is ok.

      @@LarryRobertsbc Yeah, I'm part Chinese and giving a knife symbolized cutting the relationship. I don't know which other cultures have the same belief. Glad they accepted in the spirit it was given.

    Speaking of wool.... you should be able to find some killer deals on cashmere while you are over there - maybe something that can work for your needs. And, silk. You can find specialized stores for both.
    Reading. If you are up for a good read, check out: Paul Theroux, Riding The Iron Rooster Through China.
    A memorable quote of his about Ulan Bator, “...A place so boring that everyone stopped to watch a camel walk down the street.” Or, something like that.
    Good luck on your trip.

    How many times can I say how I envy you, Larry? Livin' the dream, man, livin' the dream. Stay safe, have lots of fun, make lots of videos for us. did I mention, have fun? In case I didn't, well, have fun! Oh, and don't let TSA get your goat. Just look at the shape of their heads and forgive 'em, as my mom used to say.

    Ultra cool, Larry that you've headed back to share the land you saw with the misses. May you both have a blast. I had a question about your original clothes for Alone-Mongolia: you seemed to have worn a wool or fleece hoody or some type of scarf or wrap on your neck/head much of the time. What was that piece ? Thanks.

    • @LarryRobertsbc
      @LarryRobertsbc  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is a wool buff. Basically a circle scarf.

    cool stuff man. Thanks for sharing. If it works in MN, It will work in Mongolia. How similar is Mongolia weather, terrain, forests to Minnesota?

    • @LarryRobertsbc
      @LarryRobertsbc  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s very different than MN. Their forests aren’t as thick, and they have more grassland. He weather is similar, but not as humid. Some of it looks like parts of the Western US

    Very cool. I was cheering for you on the show, but when there's no food there's not much you can do. It seemed like you won some other victory though, and I hope that carries on for you.
    Will be watching to see how this is different from the show.

      I’ve used several brands from fleet farm, rei, and others. I just look for the thickest highest percentage wool I can find.

    Small knife looks def more professional around other people and probably you’ll only need the smaller blade

    Personally I would add a Swiss Army Knife to that list. One with a saw & scissors. Remarkably useful and non threatening. Also just in case the around town local knife laws or the LEO's are anal.

    Most of the knives I've seen them use in videos of Mongolian herders on youtube appear to be repurposed kitchen knives they prefer knives just bigger than a steak knife very pointed and single edge since most of their work involving knives is with slaughtering and skinning animals for meat and hides.
    Small knives are seen only used to cut meat and vegetables well preparing and eating meals.

    • @LarryRobertsbc
      @LarryRobertsbc  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      They really liked the knives I gave them. Unbeknown to me, it’s a taboo to give a blade without the other person returning the favor of a gift. It all worked out great though.
