How I replace a balance staff, friction fit, Hamilton 992B

  • I replace a balance staff on a Hamilton 992B. This was easy compared to the Illinois I did last year because it has a friction fit balance staff. Push out the old one and push in the new one. Very easy. There are a couple of mistakes in this video but since it took so long for youtube to tell me why it would not upload I forgot the mistakes. I have been trying since March 18, 2013 to upload this video. A couple of days ago they finally told me to try again because the video was the problem. Better late than never I guess.
    This video performed by an amateur. Do not attempt at home. No watches were harmed in the making of this video. For entertainment only.

    Thanks for watching. You are not giving me much to go on. After it runs for an hour and stops can you get it started again? Is the balance staff good? Maybe the hands touch. Maybe it needs to be cleaned and oiled.

    I like your videos. I am just starting tinkering myself. I always do my research first but a lot is from experience... so I cant wait till I get better at methods. I wouldn't worry about comments. they made watches before 1900 that last a long time without the technology we have today, with the same basic hand tools. Please.. keep posting more videos. they definitely help me out!!

    You know, I too have a fully functional full silver Anker Pocket Watch from 1910 that is guaranteed to function 70 years from now with the revision that has been made on it. Seeing all those people commenting negative stuff about your video and your way of work pisses me off. Even though you may be an amateur, you end up repairing them eventually and that is NOT BAD, you should study and try to be a master at this. You have the knowledge. Congrats! From a watch lover to another watch lover.

    On this set the large dial on the back tightens the table. The large dial is attached to a shaft with a eccentric portion. There is a rod that is threaded into the table on one end and has a hole for the eccentric on the other end. When you rotate the large dial the eccentric pulls down on the threaded rod to pull down the table. Sometimes I rotate the table to much in one direction raising it to high for the eccentric to pull it down onto the staking set.

    I have a K&D inverto 18 set, and yes the large dial on the back tightens the table (like all staking sets I suppose), but that threaded rod you talk about from underneath (with a screw on its head in my set) is where you can adjust how much the dial from the back to tighten (at least this is how it works on my set). I had the same problem as you and I found this to adjust the tighten and solve my problem. Hope this will help.

    hi there Bunn! love your videos! is the staking set you're using the K&D #18 i've been seeing on FleaBay for a bunch of $$$? did you manage to find a set with all the pieces? seems like a good set to own for putting in new balance staves. Did you just order the corresponding staff or had to measure?

    • @bunnspecial
      @bunnspecial  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My staking set cost 50 USD because it is missing some tools and it was covered in surface rust. It took me a week to clean it up. I agree a nice set cost $$$ but for what I do this one works. I ordered the staff because there are still a lot of them out there.

    Thanks so much for making this video. I learned alot. I inherited my GGrandfathers 1895 Elgin Hunter case pocket watch. It doesn't run. Thanks to your video I see what's wrong with it. What would you guess a watch repairman will charge me for this repair? BTW, I was wondering if you searched for broken piece of metal pivot. Seems like it has to be somewhere in the watch case. Thanks again

    • @bunnspecial
      @bunnspecial  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Before I started fixing my own watches I did have a couple of staffs replaced but I can't remember what it cost. Sometimes you find the broken piece still in the hole jewel but I don't remember if I found it for this watch.

  • @willf5768

    Great job so what happened to the broken pivot end? And how would you like to replace a pivot on a verge balance staff for a miniature French verge fuse pocket watch. 😁

    • @bunnspecial
      @bunnspecial  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't remember. Either I pulled it out of the jewel or it disappeared into the watch. Don't have the tools or the skill to replace pivots, just staffs.

    Brilliant video. Like watch Tinkerer I would like to know where you get your balance staffs from. I have an old Lancashire watch Company Prestcott full hunter with a broken balance staff and a damaged jewel. I would love to get it going again but cannot source the parts.

    • @bunnspecial
      @bunnspecial  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I look on ebay for staffs. There is a watch supply source on the internet that sells staffs for old pocket watches, can't remember the name, but they only carry the big names like Hamilton, Waltham, Elgin, etc. Some one put out a book listing many staffs by size in hopes that one could find a staff that is close enough to use or alter for use.

  • @mikethecoolguy2301
    @mikethecoolguy2301 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you ever have problems with the hole widening? So I'm replacing a staff on a BW Raymond and had no problem popping the old one out with my staking tools, but when attempting to put the new one in place there is a lack of friction like the hole got wider when I punched the old one out.. so it just falls out. I checked by putting the old staff back in and the hole definitely got wider because it falls out as well. Any suggestions?

    • @bunnspecial
      @bunnspecial  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I once replaced a staff and the hole was smaller. I think it is a tolerance thing. This stuff was mass produced. When you mass produce you have a tolerance, every item is not the exact same size. How loose is it? Maybe when you rivet it the staff will expand to make it tight.

  • @trrobbins4518
    @trrobbins4518 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great Video, how can you tell if the staff is bad?

    • @bunnspecial
      @bunnspecial  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well if the watch don't work is the first sign. Another possible one is if the watch only runs in one position. My favorite one is a wobbly balance. But the best way is to examine the balance staff. Also you should check for broken jewels while you are looking at the balance staff. I did a video on this question you posed. Check it out if you like.

      It is a type of plastic. The problem with this type of dial is that it cracks and then could flake off the base. Look on ebay and you will see what could happen to this dial after 50 years.

    Are all friction fit balance staffs blue?

    • @bunnspecial
      @bunnspecial  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The balance staff is not blue the hub is. The hub is riveted to the balance and they blue it so you know not to remove the hub because it is a friction fit staff. I don't know if the other companies all did it that way.

  • @sharpscornerx2

    When did Hamilton go to friction fit staffs?

    • @bunnspecial
      @bunnspecial  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am not sure. I know they use them on the 992b, 950b and other watches based on those. Also the 10 size watches. I think they may have started with the 992E and 950E. Those were made in the late thirties. It is a joy to replace those staffs. I have also seen them on Waltham and Howard (Keystone).

    This is a Good video, not that it effects the functionality of the staking main plate but try some 1500 grit wet sand paper but instead of water use 3 in one oil and put a few drops on the plate and sand in a circular motion (wrap the sand paper around a small block of wood or something small and flat) you may not get all the rust stains out but the plate will other wise polish up nicely, wipe with a clothe when done, maybe you could do a video on watch tool maintenance, IE dressing screw driver tips etc; what do you think?

    • @bunnspecial
      @bunnspecial  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      +bunnspecial yes I've seen the roller removers that look like a scissor for 10 bucks but as I purchased a staking machine I thought it'll be easier to use it to remove the roller like you're doing in your video. I guess I'll have to buy these type of "platforms" from a staking set sold separately... Or just use the "scissor" roller remover. Thank you!

  • @Ecksterphono

    To bad they didn't have incabloc, kif, or diashock back then. Breguette had a crude system using a loop system with a hole that holds the jewel in place on the balance bridge. It illiminated balance staff breakage ( not completely) but did the trick somewhat. I should retrofit a shock system like that to vintage pre 1948 pocket watches.

    My balance shaft is broken too. But I do not have a staking device. Is it possible for someone else to fix/make a complete one with wheel and spring already balanced and poised. And I install it in my watch is that possible or does one need the watch

    • @bunnspecial
      @bunnspecial  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is possible but I see some possible problems. Since you might not know the repair history of the watch the replacement staff may be to long or to short. The staff may have been replaced in the past with one not quite correct so the watch was altered to fit the replacement staff. Another problem is when the hairspring is put back on it might not be in the correct position making the watch out of beat. The watch can only be put into beat with the balance installed.
