Great monologue. You are spot on and I cannot add anything. In the end it is a question of Intrinsic Value, rather than Instrumental Value. AI is instrumental value.

Exactly this mate. I could've saved a 12:19 video and just tweeted this. 🙂

AI creates novel visual connections based on the million of images that were fed into the training model. Photos are a momentary snapshots of the real world seen through the eyes and soul of the photographer. They are vastly different in nature yet we’ll need to learn and educate others how not to confuse these two. I like your thinking about the subject Oli. Your channel is one of those hidden gems on youtube that keeps me returning to this platform.

Thank you Maurice. I filmed this a while ago and wasn’t sure whether I wanted to post or not.

Very interesting analysis. IMO, I would also question the current digital processes as a break with the concept of “gráphô”. Indeed, the term “photography” has its origins in the Greek words “phôtós” (light) and “gráphô” (to write). It is essentially an imprint of light captured by a device and materialized on physical media (necessary for the imprint). With digital cameras, the photographic rendering is interpreted by chips and processors, which means that it is no longer strictly a light imprint but rather the result of a calculation and programming. Ansel Adams talked about "departure from reality", and with digital photography and AI, how far is "truth" from reality? The impact of digital manipulation and AI on the authenticity and integrity of photographs is becoming an existential issue for photography.

One just has to look at the hands to see it’s an AI generated image and not a photo. It clearly shows how people (and contest judges) are not really/fully looking at an image and/or have lost connection with common sense and reality. An image made of bits of photos is a montage and cannot be called photography.

For the moment this will work…looking at hands. What happens when AI figures out hands? Let AI evolve, but I want to know whether what I’m looking at is real or not in a few instances without having to look for telltale signs, but simply because it’s clear.

@@oliscurra It's gonna be difficult nowadays to know if what you're looking at is real or not since we live in a world dominated by illusions and mind manipulation.
