    Just a heads up, ASCAP, BMI and SESAC are NOT publishing companies. They are Performance rights organizations. VERY big difference. You're missing out on half the bag if you don't get this.

    I'm with BMI and about 3 years ago I started receiving royalties from a song that I did 20+ years ago when I was producing a local rap group and signed to a mid sized but very well known publishing company. The crazy thing is......I vaguely even remember producing that song!! And the royalties that I've been passively receiving over these last 3 years has totaled to more money than I ever earned while actively pursuing a singer/songwriter/producer career from the mid 80's to the late 90's....SMDH!!! LOL Oh BTW these are foreign royalties not domestic.

      I’m tryna tell these people man, royalties and passive income is the greatest thing to have. Just random money coming from nowhere

    I'm with ASCAP and have been getting royalties from all over the world due to records that I was a songwriter on back in the late 70s. On my latest, there was a nice amount from Karaoke in Italy!!! It's crazy. Will have some new stuff that's been recorded and will be released soon, and I have publishing on these as well. It's like a built-in pension fund. Not complaining.

    As a producer, how did you get both publishing royalties and upfront payment? Were you both a work-for-hire and publishing percentage? Or was it negotiated via SR (owning masters)?

    • @IAMLXGEND
      @IAMLXGEND  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I didn’t get upfront payment. I just worked with an artist who submitted the correct info to SESAC, the song was tracked and I got paid.

    My question is lets say your music makes it onto a commercial or a movie part, how do they price the value of your music? Is there a set price that everyone receives or does it differ?

    • @IAMLXGEND
      @IAMLXGEND  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Depends entirely on the company, the contracts you sign, the industry you’re in. Etc etc.

    • @bobjohnson7441
      @bobjohnson7441 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also depends on WHO you are, is the song going to be a major player or a side piece, a major commercial or something that only comes on at 4am, etc. A lot of variables. So, NO. There is no set price.

    So here's what I DON'T understand.
    When establishing a Music Publishing LLC with the IRS, do I fall under the "e-commerce" category or the "service" category ?
    I was thinking ecommerce because of selling goods directly online (selling beats in the future and possibly merch), but then again, I also thought that based on what Publishing Companies do, if I'm trying to setup my own Music Publishing LLC it sounds more like a service. How would I go about setting this up bro ? Do I need to setup TWO companies ? xD man I'm confused pls send help lol
    Thanks in advance !
    (Liked & subbed btw)

      I honestly don’t think it matters. Either one works. IRS just wants their money. Lol.

    ok so... one can be a member of Asap as a writer and publisher?? ... Say as writer use your real name( ,Get paid as the writer) and Publisher using a pseudo. You get 2 checks??? as the writer and to publishing company. ??? and is it ok to be a member of asap as writer and publisher??? Hope I did not confuse you with the question.

    • @IAMLXGEND
      @IAMLXGEND  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes you can (and should) be both of you aren’t a writer for a company. And when you do your song credits you basically put that you’re the writer (whichever name you chose) for _____ publishing (your publishing name you chose) at ASCAP.

    I wish i could write or something to get publishing but like who tf would pay me as a random lyricist

    • @IAMLXGEND
      @IAMLXGEND  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It doesn't matter who you are. It's the work you do. Also, you don't need to write music for other people to get paid for publishing. There are plenty of people out there who are no name people getting paid for songs they wrote for regular artists and big artists. And there are plenty of people out there who have gotten paid from publishing their songs in movies, shows, youtube videos etc because all you do is submit and if people like it they use it. I'm not famous, and I got these opportunities merely because I make the best art I can.

    i'm a music publisher but i know a few composers that can produce music for me my question is how do you shop your music?

    • @IAMLXGEND
      @IAMLXGEND  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      TH-cam lol. That’s the way the majority of my music has been discovered, just posting on TH-cam. Other than that, I just have connections. Friends and family who are in the music industry who ask me for production or songs/features.

    i thought these places were PRO and not publishers. also did you sign a spreed sheet?? just seems like its good 2 have if u giving them ur pub info ect

    • @IAMLXGEND
      @IAMLXGEND  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are PRO's but people also refer to them as publishing companies because they also have features where they publish music for you into movies, TV, games and stuff like that. At least SESAC does. But yea, PRO or Publishing. Either way. And Spreadsheet for what?

    • @agthaog1986
      @agthaog1986 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      well i figure somehow you want to legally have an idea of what % you will be making as well as the lyricist(s) or other producer(s) on te project. i believe the term is spread sheet. i mean i know there are legal ways to go about it otherwise, but i just figured you should also have a legal document not necessarily a contract

    • @IAMLXGEND
      @IAMLXGEND  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh Yea that’s a given lol. When I’m exchanging pub info all that is included in the agreement. I don’t give out any music or anything in fact until that is already established

    • @neshashizz
      @neshashizz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you meant SPLIT sheet. And yes, it is a good thing to always do Split sheets with any musical collaborations so the percentages and registration/publishing info can known upfront. Can be daunting especially if everyone is not used to this professional way of doing music BUSINESS, but necessary EVERY TIME.

    Hey bro just to clarify those companies ASCAP et el are collections societies. Publishing companies are a bolt on company that exploit your repertoire.

      It applies wherever you can find publishing. There are UK publishing companies. Adele uses the same one I use for instance. SESAC.

    Is there any benefit to being signed to more than one publishing company?

    • @IAMLXGEND
      @IAMLXGEND  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No. And I don’t think you’re even allowed to. If you do somehow register to more than one publishing company, you can’t register a song more than once anyway. So you may as well keep everything under one roof.

    • @IAMLXGEND
      @IAMLXGEND  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you’re trying to make money from your music then register your songs or music with them. But you’re only going to get paid royalties if your music is being played somewhere.

    • @octaviajay3196
      @octaviajay3196 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m trying to find places to sell my music. I have ditto but it says it takes 50 to 100 days on iTunes to see sales from that and can be up to a year before I see money from anything else.

    • @IAMLXGEND
      @IAMLXGEND  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A publishing rights organization is not going to help you get money from making sales. They only get money from when your music is played on the radio or TH-cam or any type of airplay but not sales. There is no way around that waiting period for your music to make sales unless you sell it yourself on your own website.

    • @modolla9594
      @modolla9594 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just saying its better to grow wit your audience than try to appear superior to them good content tho but a song with a grammy should be paying you alot more thats all

    • @IAMLXGEND
      @IAMLXGEND  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Ok so that actually proves to me you don’t know how royalties actually work...
      1. A Grammy nomination does not whatsoever dictate the amount of money you get in royalties from plays.
      2. You are sadly mistaken and make a very stupid assumption that I’m trying to “appear superior” to my audience by simply stating a literal fact... am I supposed to lie and say he’s a homeless bum I made a song with on a Friday night at kinkos? No. He’s a Grammy nominated artist. That’s it. It’s not a flex. It’s a fact about who’s paying me. I am so sick and tired of people like you who assume these baseless claims about people you don’t even know. I produced for a Grammy artist. That’s it. That doesn’t make superior. That doesn’t make me better than anyone. My audience already understands this and you are literally the ONLY person who’s had an issue with me just stating a fact of my life and journey as a musician.
      3. I have been growing with my audience since I had 0 subscribers. These people know who I am. I tell them I’m broke every other day. I express when I have high moments. I express when I’m depressed and want to quit. I express when I get placements. I express when I had to sell off my music equipment just to survive. I am not high and mighty. Nor do I ever paint myself that way. I simply live my life and tell what happens. And I’m not gonna sit here and lie about experiences and dumb it down just because someone like you thinks I’m trying to flex. I’m not. This the entire purpose of my channel. To speak about the journey of a musician in the industry. Not to ONLY speak bad news and failures. But successes too. Can’t stand you folks who hate people being confident or spreading good news and assuming someone is flexing. Please leave my channel if you’re gonna continue with that nonsense
