I liked it. Your experiences, flavored with humor spice your form of caricature. 4-minute drawings leave little room to dawdle and ponder. Snap decisions are not the average artist's niche. You are incredibly fortunate to have survived the first month of your career. That alone says everything about your character. It's wonderful to watch caricature artists as yourself work.

I think you might be the first person I've heard mention Kaman's Art Shoppes. That was a blast from the past. I googled them and was sort of surprised to see they are still around in a lot of locations. Just not where I used to work. And you do have a nice command of that marker. You got a lot of variety of lines out of just one marker.

    • @meltonart
      @meltonart  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes they are still around. From what I've heard I believe the Kaman's kids are running it now.

I liked this video a lot. I know you feel others have the tutorial market cornered on YT, but honestly just watching you work, what you draw and the order you draw it is very valuable to someone like me who is starting from square one. So more videos of you doing these quick "party sketches" and sharing your thoughts (i.e. what youre choosing to emphasize or de-emphasize and why) as you do them would be very welcome.

Thanks, I needed to see this. If anyone needs proof, the first one took just 3:07, from 2:04 to 5:11. The second took just 2:57, from 5:51to 8:49. I had seen lots of the simpler type, completed drawings, (like the small, digital ones from special events that are put on artist's websites for people to download) and heard about people being able to draw one in only 3 minutes, but was skeptical cause I had never actually seen it done at normal speed. So many videos on youtube go on for much longer, include more detail, (i.e. hair), or the artist pauses more, and it might end up taking them 30 minutes or more, and then they'll speed up the recording, thinking they're saving you having to sit through it all, and then you have to slow it down to below normal speed to actually see their strokes.
I read somewhere that drawing super fast is not the most important thing, but rather to keep the pen moving without pausing long. Seems like it's the looking and seeing and decision making that can take so long. The best artists at the park near me would take at least 6-10 minutes to put on paper the exact same strokes you did here. I think your ability to draw a good head shape starting out sets up the rest so that it can't fail. If that part is right, you have likeness, and that's what I think is often lacking in many artist's quick sketches. As far as I'm concerned, if I showed a drawing to a bunch of the person's friends without telling them who it was, and they didn't recognize them, then I failed.
Parties and special events are one thing, but now I'm wondering if you can really get away with doing 'quick sketch' simplicity at theme parks where people pay $15+ when it's really simple and only took 3 minutes. Can you? They'd probably feel like they got more of their monies worth if you took longer, filled in more hair, and colored everything.
I'd like to see how you color them up, including with digital if you do digital. Btw, whose paper is cheap? What brand, quality, and count of pads do you use? What price do you consider cheap for that?
I couldn't understand you when you gave the price of the pens. It sounded like '4 to 4 set for a 2 pack.' I'd also like to see you draw someone with no unusual features that stand out, like more of a 'classic proportions' type person. You're definitely right about how it can't be learned overnight. I'm a beginner and my first attempts using a dry marker board (no paper expense) look like a little kid drew it.
The first thing that caught my attention on the woman was her nose. The bridge shape and tip extending downward below the nostrils made it look a little big to me, not small. Her eyes didn't strike me as particularly big. Different strokes for different folks, I guess. (literally). I've bought caricature books where the author lists things they see in a face that I don't see.
What did you use to hold the camera in that position, pointed down at the paper, and what software allowed you to make the pics magically appear in the corner?
Hope you can do more videos to get more ideas on how to keep it simple. If you do 'gags,' I need to build up a mental library of those too, not just features, and I haven't found a place on the Internet that makes it easy, like a series of hobbies and interests that artists have used. I've seen artists cheat by keeping pics on their phone and looking down at them as they draw. But first you have to know where to get the pics. And you have to have a phone.

The markers are .44 cents for a 2 pack. I purchase them at Wal-mart.
The paper I am using for these demos were bought insanely cheap on
      clearance. $2.00 for 500 sheets 8.5 x 11 card stock.
Most of the time I do work a little larger on 1 x 14 which I treim down
      from 11 x 17 card stock which runs about $25.00-$30.00 for 250 sheets. I
purchase it at a local Mini Mac in Charlotte.
I edit videos in adobe premiere.
Thanks again for watching I will be doing more videos as time permits.
