Yes, there will be some difficulty in getting good veg food because there may not be much varieties. Self-Meal preparation mostly depends on the Captain of your ship.

Now for Captain and officer they don't care what you are doing in your rest hour, you can choose to talk to your girlfriend or sleep or watching some movie doing workout its your rest hour spend it wisely and finally you don't need anyone permission to talk to your love ones.
