I know this is an older video but this was super helpful! i've just learned the pentatonic scale in five positions and still had no idea how to make it sound anything like a solo--thanks for this awesome concept!

This is how I play the blues. I'm not a singer but can 'talk' common sings in my head while jamming with other musicians. I get lost in my own 'space' but can still still 'hear' and respond to their music. I can relax as 'I'm not obsessed with being creative with each bar of music.

Now here is where the fun starts Now pick up the guitar and play that Root Note Chord and start to hum that Root Note and then start to see what other notes you can hum or sing along with that Root Note you can make up a simple melody that you know but whatever melody you come up with try to get it back to that Root Note so your ear and mind can see and hear that relationship

Can't thank you enough for this lesson man! I always avoided lead guitar and especially improv solos/jamming (got decent at rhythm playing instead) seeing I really didn't know where to start with improv. This really helps make a solo sound good - I've started thinking of the lead lines like sentances with pauses, syllables etc now which has really helped my phrasing. Another thing that's helped is working out vocal melodies to songs by ear - so now when jamming i'll quicky work out a few notes the singers singing then use those notes while applying the method in this lesson. Great lesson - finally feel like I'd be able to confidently improvise in a jam session now.

Phrasing is just making your guitar talk. Think short, concise sentences. It can be sweet. I can be angry. But it must make a statement and then resolve that statement with a conclusion. Over and over again. Listen to David Gilmour. He is the master.

he left out a very important technique that made me go from just playing notes to soloing: picking hand technique. Rakes, muting, different pressure. The rake is how you make a note "scream". This is a cool idea but SRV sounded like he did because of his right hand attack. My 2 cents but when i learned to properly rake it took my playing from shit to mediocre lol. i have some old videos if you want proof

  • @briancraig4058

So after playing and humming through that "G Major Pentatonic Scale"I will then Strum the Root Chord of that scale and as I am strumming I would hum some of the scale do this back and fourth for a few minutes to really hear the relationship between the scale and the Root Chord this will get into your mind and your ears

And then after that take that short melody and start to add rhythm to it and then play that on the guitar And here one thing I do if you like put words or alittle language phrases together just using that melody and now just listen careful how you phrase that saying and then using those note in that melody Trying to play on guitar the same way you spoke so talking if a great way to really to start to phrase musically I hope this help someone God Bless

Nicely but very briefly explained i.e. : "ya'll need rythm"....as a beginner , I suck at it cos I always think about notes .... It feels like there is no rhythm IN me..... very frustrating mannnnnn!.... I think this is a concept that cannot be explained as a set of guidelines but is only upto how much someone has got 'in' them to be able to come up with musical ideas

I am still learning but for me I donot like to learn new scales - reason for that at lest for myself it get my mind in a mechanical rut Which after a while it can be ruff getting out of no fun
But when I do approach learning a new scale for example a "G Major Pentatonic" I try to hum or sing each note in that scale as I play it as far as my voice is able - meaning when you find your starting to strain the voice that is far as you can go and then go back to note where your not straining please be careful with you voice and take it very easy
This just gets all notes of the scale in my ear and my mind
Sorry I donot know my text went big
