This will always be my favourite Ghibli anime. It's as if it's walking on a tightrope between the beautiful dreams of flying and human's aspirations to conquer nature, and the grim and ruthless reality of war, injustice, and death. Flying is indeed an accursed dream, awaiting for the blue sky to swallow it whole.
Werner Herzog. An amazing German-American actor/director. Can’t wait to see that documentary he did on Antarctica. He dedicated it to film critic Roger Ebert.
my first time watching this film this scene stood out to me the most the ominous music, the dialogue, the magic mountain and the impending doom for both of their nations whilst having a smoke it's surreal knowing how the war ends for both of their homelands. to me, it is strangely bittersweet how calm and lucid they are despite knowing what's in store for both of their nations
I think this is actually the second best scene in film. It’s reminiscent of the opening scene in Inglourious Basterds by Quentin Tarantino (for obvious reasons) but the way he swiftly changes topic and talks louder when the waiter walks past reminds me of how colonel hans landa changes language so the Jews can’t understand him.
Honestly as someone wich speaks french, italian and english and a bit of german, i have to admit that my favorite dub is the french one, maybe because its the one i first saw the film with but i personally think that the french dubber for the german man has a tone wich conveys the "forget it" emotion best. I still really like the others as well, and they are as misterious and all have a little thing that the others dont...
Me a 8 yo watching this scene: 👁️👄👁️ Me after studying WWII, Japan's war crime and axis alliance: "well yeah, that's too stupid to think that a kid could understand the deeper meaning of this"

...Ok the english dup seems to actually be pretty good... The Japanese dup feels kinda wierd sometimes but so does the english dup... Feels like a otherwise good movie couldn't find actors
Unlike American animation the Japanese usually make the dub once most of the animation has been completed, which is why even in the Japanese version, the mouth movements are not accurate. Also, I genuenly can't stand Hideaki Anno as the main character here lol. As much as I love his work as a filmaker, he's definitely not an actor. The English version of this movie is better by far.

War is the mother of all inventions.

He's got one of those voices you immediately recognise but you can't put a name to.
Is he really American? Sound like quite German-German
The direction for this scene makes all dubbings sound great but Herzog's voice in the English dub is like the cherry on top
Nice one
Outstanding filmmaking, the script, the music, this scene WOW

The best Ghibli movie ever created.

It's hard to pick a favourite. So many of them are good.

So what's the best then?
Everyone of Miyazaki’s films is his best film. He is a filmmaker of rare talent that can inspire, evoke and dedicate generations of other creators.
Lets not forget the incredibly tallented team who work along him making all this possible
miyazaki's best work, fight me!
Porco Rosso will always my favourite, but this is definitely in the top 5

Warner Herzog did an AMAZING job!!
Melhor filme do Estúdio Ghibli
Both the dub and the original are so good!
Masterpiece
Peace of ART❤
Why is there Steve Alpert🇺🇸 in the original dub🇯🇵 and not in the english one and Werner Herzog🇩🇪 in the english dub and not in the german one ?
yes thats weird
Maybe herzog was busy or he was to expensive for the voice acting studio.
@@cdoc1388 aahhh yes to expensive...
very interesting film,
but unfortunately the audio is intentionally in mono format.

...how can someone watch this with a dub? Specially when the story takes place in Japan but like... The mouth movement is just so of putting

Because studio Ghibli English subs are always good
the sub and lyrics don't match
The Japanese (og), German, English dubs are all great. The Chinese one is garbage
I think the English one takes the cake though.
