    SciShow , please continue to follow this story. I would like to know the biomechanics of these creatures--how their bones supported their massive mass, how they moved, etc. I assume it will be similar to other large dinos, but I'd like to hear more as more becomes available. Thanks!

    Thanks for talking about the earthquakes!! I have been watching quakes for five years and I am fascinated by it. And you are right! There are quakes every day all the time, and in fact one JUST happened before I started watching this video, right next to that Volcano in Paupa New Guinea that erupted on August 29th 2014. Do an episode on Paupa New Guinea! I Love SciShow

    I grew up in Vallejo CA, which is extremely close to Napa Valley where the big quake happened. I have a lot of family there so I was very concerned. But as a Californian, I'm used to quakes, so all the ones happening here in Oklahoma are nothing to me. It humors me when everyone else is freaking out about a little tremor.
    This dinosaur news is very thrilling in my nerdy heart, as a kid I was so in love with learning about them and memorizing their names, and watching Jurassic Park over and over again. And yeah, "for a girl" I knew more about them and had tons of figures than any boy I knew.

    I wonder if you would feel the ground tremble if you stood next to that dinosaur as it walks.

    • @Zerepzerreitug
      @Zerepzerreitug 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      considering how the ground trembles when a large truck passes by, I would guess so :) And most trucks are lighter than the 60 metrics tons of this dinosaur.

    • @VenrezvonVyntari
      @VenrezvonVyntari 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If it weighs 60 tons, you damn well most definitely would feel the ground tremble.
      Most Melbourne Trams are around 20-30 tons, depending on their load and design. When they go rattling by, you can feel the ground vibrate even if you're 10-20 meters away, and you can hear it way, way, way further away than that.
      Consider that these Trams have a consistent weight via wheels that simply travels along the ground. If you had a Dinosaur that weighs TWICE this (60 tons) and puts all of its weight down with each step, it'd be like a miniature, localized earthquake each time.

    How could dinosaurs be so big? The largest living land animal is the African Bush Elephant. And this dinosaur was 13 times larger? How? Why are there no land animals of that size today?

    • @nvrguru22
      @nvrguru22 9 ปีที่แล้ว +81

      Scientist believe animals were bigger in the past because of higher temperatures to keep their blood warm. Also there was a higher amount of oxygen in the past because of more plants and less animals. Together it gave animals the ability to grow bigger.

    • @audio_worm
      @audio_worm 9 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      It's probably because there was more oxygen in the atmosphere back then. Same happened with insects, dragon flies were huge and so were other species.

    • @mboer4
      @mboer4 9 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Because the air had more oxygen back then and because all big animals now are mammals and mammals can't become super big because then the pregnancy would take too long.

    • @beayn
      @beayn 9 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      If I recall correctly, it's because of climate. There were warmer temperatures, more vegetation, more oxygen in the air, and as a result, a much larger ecosystem capable of supporting large animals like that.

    • @midnightsangel1445
      @midnightsangel1445 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      There's no room for it. Elephants could grow bigger but their habitat is dwindling so there's not enough resources, nor is there really a need, for them to get bigger. The large dinosaurs got so big as a defense mechanism against their predators. Today, lions and tigers are much smaller than elephants and they typically have to hunt in a group to take even one elephant down. There's just no reason to be so big at this point in time.

      I've been noticing the issue you mentioned as well. I have to actually go into their videos section to see the most recent videos posted. and it only keeps track of your "watched" videos for like 3 weeks so it'll start recommending videos you've already seen.

Issues posted years ago in the forums are questioned again a year or more later by other users who still experience the same issue but no solution is ever produced.

    worth noting:
    earthquakes that far away are unrelated (obviously). but, recent data suggests that if you have nearby faults with built up pressure (faults ready to go), one fault rupturing can disturb the other faults into rupturing. effectively, this can create a cascade effect of massive earth movements. yeah. thats kinda horrifying. i'm from southern california, so as most of you are possibly aware, our big earthquake fear is the san andres fault rupturing. if that were to happen, the current fear is that it would rupture other nearby faults, bumping up the magnitude even further. but, we still don't really get how this works, so its hard to predict if this will happen- thus, hard to predict how big that earthquake actually would be (interestingly though, we DO know how big an earthquake from a given fault would be- we can calculate how long between movements on a fault, and thus how much potential energy is built up in there. that translates to magnitude of earthquake. though, again worth noting, magnitude does not equal intensity- that actually kinda has more to do with the area and resonance of the soil there. buuut...this is getting tangential).
    -sauce: studying civil engineering with an emphasis in geotechnical engineering. :D

    Actually, the USGS identifies earthquakes globally... not just in the US. That 20,000 per annum figure I'm sure would include all detectable earthquakes planet-wide. Case in point: I was in Himachal Pradesh, India in Sept-Oct of 2012 where I experienced a local quake. I got on the USGS earthquake site and found the quake's position and magnitude listed within minutes of its occurrence. Yay! USGS!

    By fluid he means that the molocules of the soil, granite, limestone,bedrock and various other elements in the crust are to far apart, ie water which is a fluid, yes the crusy is a solid but the ability to transfer the requires energy a long distance is kust not there take into consideration also that there is quadrillions of tonnes of pressure above most of the earths crust and that slowes down the transference of energy just like trying to talk to someone who has noise cancellation headphones on

    Would it be possibly to one day invent a program that decodes, maps, and conceptualizes DNA? as in a program that could show us what animals looked like based on its DNA?

    • @remuladgryta
      @remuladgryta 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes. We "just" need a DNA virtual machine and some other cell emulating software. Throw it all in a supercomputer and voila!

      Maybe, but for what I've read, DNA has an expiration date of a few million years. So unlike what Jurassic Park has made you believe, we haven't, and can't, found dinosaur DNA

      Arturo Gutierrez Though I do believe Russians recently found wooly mammoth DNA frozen in ice that survived pretty well. In the right circumstances we might find some older DNA from dinosaurs frozen in ice too though we would have to be incredibly lucky.

    I thought seismic activity is the relief of stress with a fault because you know faults are moving... And that relief of stress creates more relief of stress... After the large earthquake that hit Japan seismologists said there were like 500 more small earthquakes caused by the main earthquake...

    One would guess that me living in Argentina would have already heard about this new dinosaur. I don't know if the cause was poor media coverage or the fact that we have other (more important) things to worry about. Neither one makes us look good.

    surely those 3 examples are completely related as theyre all along the same convergent plate boundary of the american plate and the pacific plate, releasing stress around the same time?
