I sure do know who Claude Rains is and I LOVE him SOOOO much. I agree 100% with your commentary concerning his distinct voice and his unfortunate lack of not being utilized as a leading man (he was very handsome) He was a tremendous talent as an actor and orator. Today by the way is his 126th birthday in heaven. Golden Slumbers Mr. Rains.
It is so wonderful that this beautiful man has so many devoted fsns, evev today. Born to abject poverty, with a severe speech defect, he saw trench warfare in ww1, where he was blinded in one eye, the right. I agree, his voice and smooth, sweet ways, his piercing eyes, can inspire absolute ardor. One does not know quite the words to say, but l'll settle for "hot damn, what a man!"
Claude Rains, a brilliant actor, with that so special talent and fabulous voice, whether as villain or hero. So many special performances in so many famous films, Casablanca, Notorious, the Advenures of Robin Hood, Mr Smith Goes to Washington, to name just a few. Thanks for the upload.
He's usually the best thing in any movie he's in. He steals the show in Casablanca (in my opinion) . If you can steal the show in a movie with that cast.... that's impressive.
Ah, I finally have re-gained ability to make comments after a long period of computer down-time. This is yet another comment about this video from me. Yes, Rains reigns high in my estimation, and I do hope people continue to either remember and respect his work, or first-time discover this artist, one of the greats. He always made any project shine brighter than it would have without him, especially that very outre SF film he did in the early 60's in Italy, IL PIANETA DEGLI UOMINI SPENTI/PLANET OF THE LIFELESS MEN, or BATTLE OF THE WORLDS, the imported title). The last shot really made me pine for the character he played. But, of course, so powerfully wonderful in MR. SMITH..., THE INVISIBLE MAN, CASABLANCA, ANGLE ON MY SHOULDER, THE WOLFMAN, NOW VOYAGER etc. And that voice!--Rains is right up there with those rare ultra-unforgettable ones---Ronald Colman, James Mason, Vincent Price, Joseph Cotton, Orson Welles....It's a limited list and he is definitely high among them. Thanks again for this video (which I've watched a couple of times and pointed out to others of us Rains-fans!)
I've loved Claude Rains for decades. His amazing talent is a joy to behold. Yes to the voice, his good looks, his intellect, his manner. I had no trouble falling for Job Skeffington! :) Thanks so much for this video--liked and subscribed!
Thank you so much for making this wonderful appreciation video! Rains was maybe the most under-rated actor ever. I also love him in Now, Voyager, and could not understand why Bette Davis wasted her time on Paul Henried, when Dr. Jaquith was around....so charming, I would have snatched him up! You didn't mention it, but I love him so much in Shaw's Caesar and Cleopatra with Vivien Leigh.
Oh Jerome, so delighted to find another Claude Rains fan. I can't tell you how much cinematic enjoyment that man has given me. God bless you and thank you
Notorious is my favorite Hitchcock film and so I hope that you get around to reviewing it. Also, I might consider Claude Rains to be a romantic lead in the David Lean film The Passionate Friends.
Wow. What a wonderful and loving tribute to a wonderful star. Loved him in everything he did and as you so aptly put it ,boy could he hold his own. The guy was so consistent and delivered every time. I mean jeepers , even as an elderly man toward the end of his career he was laying down some Rainesesque zingers with Peter OToole ! Love him and loved this tribute. Thanks.
I agree completely Claude Rains was a superb actor, i always felt if his name was listed to be in a movie, it was going to be excellant. I cant wait ta see Deception and many more of his films
Claude Rains is also favorite of mine. He is such a good actor but I suppose he didn’t have Cary Grant looks hence the supporting actor career. I too am a Hitchcock fan and love him in Notorious! He also played in several episodes of Alfred Hitchcock Presents. I especially like his portrayal of a Parish priest in “The Horse Player”!
Claude Rains is wonderful. I recently stumbled upon a copy of 'Angel On My Shoulder' (1946) at a thrift store. Rains is teamed up with Paul Muni and Anne Baxter. A strong recommendation from me if you haven't seen it. Well done for putting this tribute together.
Mr. Rains is a real major favorite of mine. I kinda doubt that the film I'm about to mention is your cup o'tea, but I recommend it just for his performance: BATTLE OF THE WORLDS. Done in the mid-60's. Italian film with some English spoken, Claude Rains most recognizably so. He's a cantankerous mathematician who figures---ahead of virtually every other scientist on Earth---that our planet is going to be hit by "the outsider"---another planet that has wandered into our solar system. It's pretty quirky, pretty strange, but also pretty unique. One, of course, may have to take the visual effects with a major grain of salt (or a huge boulder of granite!), but you might find it of interest due to the Rains Factor. (There is also some really odd music in it, including the opening, uh, "song" that features the lyric, "The outsider"...truly weird.) Well, I could go on about this oddity, but I maybe should give over to the comments of others here. Good wishes.
Quirky sci-fi? Sounds like a movie my mom might enjoy. :) And as you say, it may be worth seeing for his performance alone. Thanks for the recommendation!
@@Weiselberry I mean, it is pretty darn odd. It can be found on YT, but the print transfers are faded, washed out. Which is a shame since it was a very colorful film at one time. For a short time it was find-able on ebay as a transfer from the original Italian release print, but I'm not sure it is still available. Rains makes it worth sticking through---that is, if you can find it.
Walter Brennan was another fellow that had a highly successful career, mostly as a character actor. And to my recollection, he almost always played a scruffy guy, and his character often older than he really was. And, Claude did become legal American citizen in '39.
The 2 movies where Rains plays an angel are good - "Here comes Mr Jordan" and "Angel on my shoulder." "Caesar and Cleopatra," "King's Row" and the all films with Betty Davis and Errol Flynn were good. There are too many to list. I recently saw "The Clairvoyant" (1935) on a whim because I had a yen to see Fay Wray and enjoyed it. I hope to see him in David Lean's "The Passionate Friends" as I plan to take time to do a Lean viewing festival."
Miss Weiselberry, you have exceptionally good taste. Claude Raines was a tremendously talented actor. It is a very difficult task to draw up a short list of his greatest performances. But might I suggest that his Prince John opposite Errol Flynn deserves a place. Drat! So too would his performance in Lawrence of Arabia. How do you draw up a short list for such a consistently excellent actor? Thank you. You've reminded me of all these fine movies. I'll have to renew my acquaintance with them.
I just discovered your channel and I'm extremely fond of your appreciation for classic film. I do a similar kind of thing myself, currently going year by year. I am also a big fan of Claude Rains. Naturally, this started with Casablanca, but over the years I have seen and enjoyed many others. Now Voyager is also one of my favourite films, and when I get to 1942 in a few weeks, I'm certain that both films will feature heavily. Off topic a bit, I want to recommend a film to you, not Claude, but one of my favourites of that era: 1937's Stage Door, starring Ginger Rogers and Katharine Hepburn. If you've seen it and either didn't like it or mentioned it in a video I haven't seen yet, disregard. But if you haven't, I urge you to do so. And hey, great stuff.
Thanks! It's fun to hear from another fan of classic films, and one who's also making videos about them to boot. I happened to just watch a new-to-me Rains movie today: Saturday's Children (1940). I loved it and loved him in it. But he's great in everything, of course. I did see Stage Door. It was several years ago, so I'm a little fuzzy on the details, but I remember enjoying its sharp witty tone and honesty.
I just watched Saturday's Children. Thanks for the recommendation. I really enjoyed it. Nice guy Rains is my favourite Rains. And I've never been much of a John Garfield fan, but I quite liked him in this one. So thanks again. I may not have found that particular movie on my own.
You're welcome! I'm so glad you liked the movie. I feel the same way: as great as Rains is as a villain, those rare occasions when he got to play a regular guy in a domestic setting are so wonderful. And I agree, Garfield was very endearing here too.
Hi! I watched Now, Voyager yesterday and chanced upon this video. Claude Rains is one of my favorite actors too, I definitely agree with your sentiments, especially his voice. The Invisible Man is one of my favorite films, him being rude to the innkeeper lady is so funny to me, it's just so ridiculous. Una O'Connor was a great comedic actress. Rains had the same villanous charm that Vincent Price had where you cant help but root for them. I've spent a good hour looking at your channel now and as a classic film enthusiast I had to subscribe! I'm curious which country outside of USA and England would be your favorite as far as classic films go, if you'd be so kind as to divulge :)
Thanks for subscribing! I'm so glad you've been enjoying my videos. As for which country outside of the USA and England is my favorite for classic films, I'm not sure. I do have a soft spot for German expressionism of the 1920s, but with all the Godzilla and other monster/sci-fi movies I've covered, I guess I'd have to say Japan. :)
The more videos you post, the more I realize just how much our tastes are the same (or in some cases, that we like the same shows/films/actors for different reasons). i completely forgot that he was in Mr Smith Goes to Washington and now need to watch that again very soon! I also need to rewatch Now, Voyager and Phantom. How do you spell the title of the other film he is in with Bette Davis? did you say it was Mr Skefffington? Need to see that one and just more of his films in general because I haven't seen nearly enough for liking him as much as I do. Also Notorious is just perfection and I know what you mean about that scene!
Haha, I know, I keep thinking the same thing! It's great to hear that you're a Claude Rains fan too! Yes, the title is Mr. Skeffington. He's very likable in it. I think I've seen 21 of his movies (out of 58, if I counted right), and there are a lot of good ones I didn't mention too!
Well, The Adventures of Robin Hood is classic. I also liked him in Here Comes Mr. Jordan and Angel On My Shoulder (he plays an angel in one and a devil in the other), and in The Wolf Man.
And if you want to see him being absolutely horrendous, there's Deception. He stars again with Bette Davis and Paul Henreid in that. I can't say I loved it, but it was interesting and well-acted.
ooo Adventures of Robin Hood has been on my list for awhile now, i need to get to that one and i liked the new Wolf Man (probably in the minority there) so excited to see the old one. The others sound good too :)
Did you read the book? H. G. Wells didn't make the classical 'mad doctor's" stereotype in his novel.Hollywood made Griffin, perhaps for humanistic reasons and to add terror to the story, to be the same kin as of Dr. Frankenstein and Dr. Moureau. To be sincere, they made the story better. Thinking about a doctor deranged with that power is truly terrifying .I don't think a better choice than Claude Rains for that role.It is a pity that didn't made more horror movies with such a voice.
It's so weird how you seem to gravitate towards the same stories, movies, and actors as I. I also have a soft spot for Claude Rains, although I have not seen him in much. I loved him in Lawrence of Arabia and Casablanca. Whenever I watch Casablanca, I really try to like it but really only like the relationship between Claude Rains and Bogart's character. Now that is interesting. I don't see what is so moving about a girl who cheated on her husband and then almost leaves him when she has a chance to run off with her lover. There is no real honor. "We'll always have Paris" is a cheap way to refer to a fling they had over the course of a couple weeks. Love your reviews and comments, though. Thanks for sharing as always!!
Weird and awesome. :) I'm so glad to hear it! You know, I've mentioned Casablanca in at least two videos but I never bring it up for the romance. Bogart and Bergman are iconic, but when I think about the movie, I think of the witty script, the amusing characters, and the tensions building between them. Though I can appreciate the tragic elements of the romance, I never get as emotionally pulled into it as I do some other old romances. I'm actually relieved when she goes with her husband--and the fact that he's played by Paul Henreid is only part of that. :)

Indeed!
Oh, Claude Rains is my favorite! Dr. Jaquith is my favorite of his roles.
But, the final scenes of The Passionate Friends grab my heart!
IKR? 'Let's go home,' sweetest words a broken heart can ever hear.

Notorious is my favorite Hitchcock film and so I hope that you get around to reviewing it. Also, I might consider Claude Rains to be a romantic lead in the David Lean film The Passionate Friends.
Soon! For no reason in particular, I've been putting it off. Saving it, perhaps. :)
I couldn't agree more with you about Claude Rains. Great actor who made everything he was in infinitely better!
Wow. What a wonderful and loving tribute to a wonderful star. Loved him in everything he did and as you so aptly put it ,boy could he hold his own. The guy was so consistent and delivered every time. Right on!! I loved him in Casablanca and Now Voyager and Notorious!
Totally agree. One of the all-time greats.
I’ve been watching a lot of 1942 movies this year, and really got into Claude Raines. He’s terrifying in ‘King’s Row’.
Nice! 1942 was a great year for movies and for Rains.
One of the best actors......
Thank you so much for this discussion of a wonderful actor!

Bravo, so young with such dept in understanding this giant Claude Rains
I love him too. You hit the nail on the head here.
I love rains!!
"I'm shocked! SHOCKED! to find GAMBLING going on in here!"
"You're winnings, sir."
"Oh, thank you very much."

To say Alex Sebastian had to make a 'difficult' decision in Notorious is to put it _very_ midly...LOL...This was an amazing video! Thanks!
Hahaha, yes, you're absolutely right. Thanks, I'm glad you liked it! :)
thank you for this lovely video !
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for your posting. One of the best,
I was looking for the Twilight Zone episode where Claude Rains plays a priest and you popped up! Great video!
