I live in Montana and have grown up here. This kind of life appeals to me so much. I hunt and fish with my dad and love the quiet open ranges and streams, and a lot of the people I’ve hunted with are ranchers or former ranchers. They’re all great people. A quiet life is sometimes the best.

My grandpa stayed in Wisconsin after his brother and parents moved to Noxon. They started a store and various businesses there. All I know of anymore is their descendants have an outfitter's there. My grandpa got mad at his brother and changed the spelling of our name from Weare to Weir. He never spoke of them. Just before he died, the nurses said he spelled his name like the original name. Sure enough, we still had relatives there and in Ord, Nebraska with that spelling. I learned more about grandpa's brother from bits and pieces of a book called Behind These Mountains that I saw on the internet. According to the book, my grandpa had a little brother that passed away from eating an apple that must have still had insecticide on it. Montana is so Beautiful!

I worked on the Johnson ranch on the Blackfeet res some years back.
We ran 1600 pair and planted wheat , baled hay and all the things that ranchers do.
    What a life.
I now have a small farm, like my parents did and at 68 I still enjoy the peace, the critters and especially birthing time.

Just do it, just recently I started wearing cowboy boots, belt/buckle, and a hat because why not? Society can't dictate what you do or how you do it as long as it's not illegal or harmful.
      Being a cowboy isn't a birth right my friend, it's a mindset

@The Bohannon Cannon great comment. The war on all things animal keeps people alienated from real life. The claiming all things animal related as cruel scan easy lie to spread to those who have no life with animals.

There's lots of people like this, people just don't know about them because they don't leave the city. All over New Mexico, Texas, and Arizona there's these kinds of people. I'm sure there's plenty in other states, including California too. There's definitely fewer now, but still quite a lot. Everyone marvelling at him makes me laugh. He's very skillful, but not alone.

    • @whitter86

there are people like this in every state. If there's a cow in the state there's a cow poke workin em may not have a big ol operation but theyre the backbone of the country. Same with farmers

After losing a rental in the small mining town of Marysville, I ended up (2.5 weeks in) on an 1850s homestead ranch SE of Ashland -- just a tad west 'n north of Alzada. NOT working it; renting from the aging legacy children happy with Billings. Still stunned daily only to see the vast hand tools, equipment and things necessary to carve out a life here. All I can do to mow back the jungle. Merely walking outside can stop you in your tracks by the beauty, howling coyotes or even the SNAPPING TURTLES that wander up from the pond. ("winter'? nah, it'll be fine." yikes!)

I have hung around with those old boys. They have to have MBA skills to keep those places running even if they inherited them. Then there’s the stamina and physical strength. They could knock your blank straight. We’ve hauled cattle for them on a handshake.
He probably has to mechanic and butcher wood along with pulling calves.

I was born into agriculture back in 1977. Grew up on a irrigated cow place /crop farm now over in eastern Montana on a Dryland cow place no crop no haying and I notice less and less cow people. Being a transplant usually the daughters of a rancher bring home some "dude" and then they expand their ranch as far as male cowboys on our own ranch we are a dying breed my life summed up will be a fart in the wind.
